Development Of Cfl-Free, Explicit Schemes For Multidimensional Advection-Reaction Equations, Hong Wang, Jiangguo Liu

Faculty Publications

We combine an Eulerian–Lagrangian approach and multiresolution analysis to develop unconditionally stable, explicit, multilevel methods for multidimensional linear hyperbolic equations. The derived schemes generate accurate numerical solutions even if large time steps are used. Furthermore, these schemes have the capability of carrying out adaptive compression without introducing mass balance error. Computational results are presented to show the strong potential of the numerical methods developed.

Reallocates 30% of certain state revenues collected on motor vehicle sales or leases from the General Fund to the Traffic Congestion Relief and Safe School Bus Trust Fund. Allocates money for transportation programs including: highway expansion, specific freeway interchange improvements, mass transit improvements, purchasing buses, and expanding light and commuter rail. Herbivore-Mediated Effects On Ecosystem Processes In A Near-Arctic Salt Marsh, Brian Thomas Person

Herbivores influence, and often regulate energy flow. I investigated interactions between herbivory and the foods on which geese rely while nesting and rearing their broods on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in southwestern Alaska. In a captive Cackling Canada gosling (Branta Canadensis minima) experiment I decoupled the effects of seasonal declines in forage quality and availability on gosling development. An 11% decline in forage quality translated to goslings that were structurally smaller and 100 g lighter at 31 days of age. Forage availability had similar effects on gosling size, and the combined magnitude of these effects are similar to those observed in …

Many people consider Alaska the last frontier, isolated and independent from the rest of the United States. An analysis of the salmon industry in Bristol Bay and a strike that occurred in 1951 cast doubt upon this belief. The labor dispute and preceding events paint a vivid picture of a population clearly dependent on a fishing industry controlled by absentee owners who manipulated events from Seattle and San Francisco. The strikers included Natives and Non-Natives who joined together to fight the powerful cannery owners and west coast unions who sought to expand their membership. Understanding The Lived Experience Of Racist Hate Speech On American University Campuses, Jonathan Andre Matusitz

This research employs narrative methodology in order to understand the lived experience of students who have experienced racist racist hate speech on American university campuses. Thematic analysis of in-depth, conversational interview capta (Kvale, 1996) was used to find commonalities in co-researchers' experiences. The literature review includes a contextual and historical section on racism, and a detailed, standard definition of racist hate speech. Emergent themes from these narrative interviews were found in regard to victims' experiences of racist hate speech on American university campuses. Those themes are discussed in the order of the co-researchers' experience: (1) indignation and anger, (2) stereotyping, …

Finite Element Analysis Of Yield Functions Of Kelvin Foams With Open Cells, Beiqing Huang

Proper design of foams requires an understanding of the response of the materials to stress. This thesis, based on finite element analysis, provides numerical solutions in modeling the yield behavior of Kelvin foams. The FEA model, representing a complicated unit cell, was calculated and meshed. C++ programs were designed and implemented to generate meshes for unit cells. Finite element analyses were performed for many cases. Multiple methods were employed for the determination of yield points which form yield surfaces. Comparisons between several results have been made. Our FEA results, Zhang's function and Gibson's theory show good agreements except some differences …

Laser Intensity Scaling Through Stimulated Scattering In Optical Fibers, Timothy H. Russell

The influence of stimulated scattering on laser intensity in fiber optic waveguides is examined. Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in long, multimode optical waveguides is found to generate a Stokes beam that propagates in the fiber LP01 mode. Additionally, the same process is found to combine multiple laser beams into a single spatially coherent source. Limitations in beam cleanup and combining are also investigated to identify ways to overcome them. The last portion of the dissertation theoretically examines suppression of stimulated Raman scattering in fibers to eliminate the restriction this imposes on the power of a fiber laser or amplifier. A Fuzzy Autopilot Design Approach That Utilizes Non-Linear Consequent Terms, Robert Sutton, Paul J. Craven

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper describes the development of a fuzzy autopilot for controlling the non-linear yaw dynamics of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) model. The autopilot design is based on a new approach that uses a Gaussian fuzzy inference mechanism. For the design study, the AUV model is hosted in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. Simulation results are presented which illustrate the potential of this novel methodology.

Mary Wollstronecraft once said, probably with a sigh, "I do earnestly wish to see the distinction of sex confounded in society, unless where love animates the behavior." Two centuries later, many groups in American political life are still caught in the same dilemma: hoping that a just society will take account of an essential characteristic -- race and sex spring to mind -- in ways that will benefit the group, while eschewing the potentially harmful characterizations that lie just on the flip side of the coin.

Thermal Effects In Dynamics Of Interfaces, Alexander Umantsev

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Working Papers

Dynamical Ginzburg–Landau theory is applied to the study of thermal effects of motion of interfaces that appear after different phase transitions. These effects stem from the existence of the surface thermodynamic properties and temperature gradients in the interfacial transition region. Thermal effects may be explained by the introduction of a new thermodynamic force exerted on the interface, called here Gibbs–Duhem force, and the internal energy density flux through the interface. The evolution equations for the interfacial motion are derived. For the experimental verification of the thermal effects during continuous ordering the expression is derived for the amplitude of temperature waves.
