Committee Of Heads Of Local Arab Councils V. Ministry Of Construction, Dorit Beinisch, Aharon Barak, Yaakov Kedmi Dec 2001

Committee Of Heads Of Local Arab Councils V. Ministry Of Construction, Dorit Beinisch, Aharon Barak, Yaakov Kedmi

Translated Opinions

Facts: Petition seeking the establishment of egalitarian socio-economic criteria for the implementation of the Neighborhood Restoration Project, and a similar inclusion of Arab settlements, which are ranked under the first and second cluster by the Central Office of Statistics, to the inclusion within the project of Jewish settlements which fall under that same ranking.

Held: In the majority opinion, written by Justice Beinisch, the petition was granted in part as to the requested criteria. The court determined that the petition was made partially extraneous given the drafting of new criteria in 1999, and that the criteria were to be redrafted …

Environmental Challenges For The Ranching Community, Ron Micheli Dec 2001

Environmental Challenges For The Ranching Community, Ron Micheli

Range Beef Cow Symposium

My grandfather used to love to tell the story of a preacher who came to the ranch to visit. “My goodness, Joe, you have a beautiful place,” said the minister. “The green grass blowing in the wind, the cottonwood trees filled with singing birds, the abundant wildlife, and the sparkling streams, it is amazing what you and the good Lord have done.”

“Yes,” my grandfather said, “It is beautiful. But you should have seen it when the Lord was doing it by himself.”

There is a great message in that story. Man can improve the environment. Man can enhance mother …

The Informed Imagination: Researching And Building A Character’S Identity, Jeremy William Hilgert Dec 2001

The Informed Imagination: Researching And Building A Character’S Identity, Jeremy William Hilgert

Theses and Dissertations

An actor’s duty to the play is to present the most fully formed and vivid interpretation of the character. To do so, the actor must have an understanding of how that particular character developed their own sense of identity. This should be constructed not from the actor’s personal experience but from an informed imaginative experience founded on research and analysis. As pedagogues we are challenged with attempting to give young actors the skills for such an analysis. I have developed a formula to aid the actor in creating the foundations for such an interpretation founded upon the sociological understanding of …

Naturalized Epistemology And The Law Of Evidence, Ronald Jay Allen, Brian R. Leiter Dec 2001

Naturalized Epistemology And The Law Of Evidence, Ronald Jay Allen, Brian R. Leiter

Public Law and Legal Theory Papers

This paper important developments in epistemology, and defends a theoretical framework for evidence scholarship from the perspective of naturalized epistemology. It demonstrates that naturalized epistemology provides a firm conceptual foundation for much research into law of evidence. These developments in epistemology have not been much noted in legal scholarship, despite their importance in philosophy and their coincidence with some widely shared approaches to evidence scholarship. This article is a partial antidote for the unproductive fascination in some quarters of the legal academy with "postmodern" conceptions of knowledge and truth and to the even more common search by the legal professoriat …

System Using Green Light To Determine Parmeters Of A Cardiovascular System, John Edward Scharf Dec 2001

System Using Green Light To Determine Parmeters Of A Cardiovascular System, John Edward Scharf

USF Patents

A reflectance pulse oximeter that determines oxygen saturation of hemoglobin using two sources of electromagnetic radiation in the green optical region, which provides the maximum reflectance pulsation spectrum. The use of green light allows placement of an oximetry probe at central body sites (e.g., wrist, thigh, abdomen, forehead, scalp, and back). Preferably, the two green light sources alternately emit light at 560 nm and 577 nm, respectively, which gives the biggest difference in hemoglobin extinction coefficients between deoxyhemoglobin, RHb, and oxyhemoglobin, HbO2.

A Pdz-Binding Motif Is Essential But Not Sufficient To Localize The C Terminus Of Cftr To The Apical Membrane, Michal I. Milewski, John E. Mickle, John K. Forrest, Diane M. Stafford, Bryan D. Moyer, Jie Cheng, William B. Guggino, Bruce A. Stanton, Garry R. Cutting Dec 2001

A Pdz-Binding Motif Is Essential But Not Sufficient To Localize The C Terminus Of Cftr To The Apical Membrane, Michal I. Milewski, John E. Mickle, John K. Forrest, Diane M. Stafford, Bryan D. Moyer, Jie Cheng, William B. Guggino, Bruce A. Stanton, Garry R. Cutting

Dartmouth Scholarship

Localization of ion channels and transporters to the correct membrane of polarized epithelia is important for vectorial ion movement. Prior studies have shown that the cytoplasmic carboxyl terminus of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) is involved in the apical localization of this protein. Here we show that the C-terminal tail alone, or when fused to the green fluorescent protein (GFP), can localize to the apical plasma membrane, despite the absence of transmembrane domains. Co-expression of the C terminus with full-length CFTR results in redistribution of CFTR from apical to basolateral membranes, indicating that both proteins interact with the …

Document Processing For Automatic Color Form Dropout, Andreas E. Savakis, Christopher R. Brown Dec 2001

Document Processing For Automatic Color Form Dropout, Andreas E. Savakis, Christopher R. Brown

Articles

Color dropout refers to the process of converting color form documents to black and white by removing the colors that are part of the blank form and maintaining only the information entered in the form. In this paper, no prior knowledge of the form type is assumed. Color dropout is performed by associating darker non-dropout colors with information that is entered in the form and needs to be preserved. The color dropout filter parameters include the color values of the non-dropout colors, e.g. black and blue, the distance metric, e.g. Euclidian, and the tolerances allowed around these colors. Color dropout …
