This Article arises out of the intersectionality and post-intersectionality literature and makes a case against the essentialist considerations that informed HRC's endorsement of D'Amato. Part I discusses the pitfalls that occur when scholars and activists engage in essentialist politics and treat identities and forms of subordination as conflicting forces. Part II examines how essentialism negatively affects legal theory in the equality context. Part III considers the historical motivation for and the efficacy of the "intersectionality" response to the problem of essentialism. Purpose: The2′,5′-oligoadenylate-dependent RNase L gene functions in the interferon-inducible RNA decay pathway known as the 2–5A system. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the absence of this gene affects the pathogenesis of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) ocular infection in the mouse. Methods: HSV-1 (strain McKrae) was applied bilaterally to unscarified corneas of RNase L–null mice and congenic controls. To evaluate the severity of herpetic keratitis, slit lamp examinations (SLE) were performed every other day for 14 days. Isolation And Characterization Of Streptomyces Spp. From Soils, G.Y. Tan, C.Y. Ho, E.L. Tan, Kwai Lin Thong

The isolation of forty-eightstrains of actinomycetesfrom eightsoil sampleswas donewith the conventional dilution plate method on Humic acid-vitamin agar (lfVA), Starch Casein agar and Sorenson's agar. FIVAwas found to be the best isolation medium as more strains of actinomycete could be isolated. Based on the aerial mycelium colour scheme, three colour groups were recognised. Representative isolates from each colour group were subjected to macrorestriction analysis with the pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The different coloured strainsexhibitedlowlevelsofsimilariry(Dice coefficient,F<0.50).A cetoneextractsoftheisolateswerescreened on mutant yeastsf or Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) Kinase and MAPK Phosphatasei nhibitor to find an indirect inhibitor of ras. However, no inhibitor was found but seven isolates exhibited toxic effect towards the yeasts. PFGE analysis of these isolates showed that two of isolateswere identical. From the phenotlpic and genotypic characteristics, the two isolates were shown to be of the same strain.

The Death Penalty In Virginia: Attempts At Legislative Reform, Tara Elgie

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

This paper will argue that the time has come for legislative reform of capital punishment. It will briefly examine the history of the death penalty, focusing on the provisions under which it was reinstated and whether those provisions are met under today's implementation. Then it will look to recent attempts by the Virginia General Assembly to reform the procedures by which it implements the death penalty. The paper will also explore public perception of the death penalty as an explanation for why the death penalty persists as the ultimate punishment, despite recent problems with its implementation.

Measurements of peroxycarboxylic nitric anhydrides (PANs) made in Houston, Texas during TexAQS (Texas Air Quality Study) 2000 showed a relatively abundant PAN compound that had not been identified in previous studies in North America [cf. Williams et al., 2000]. This compound was hypothesized to be peroxyacrylic nitric anhydride { CH2=CHC(O)OONO2, APAN} based on the work of Tanimoto and Akimoto, [2001]. APAN was synthesized and characterized on one of the two GC systems used to make those measurements, subsequent to the TexAQS 2000 field study, confirming that APAN was observed during TexAQS 2000, both on the ground and in airborne measurements. …

The Population Council initiated its work on adolescents in the mid-1990s. At that time, those advocating greater attention to adolescent issues were concerned about adolescent fertility—particularly outside of marriage—and adolescent “risk-taking” behavior. As an international scientific organization with its mandate centered around the needs of developing countries, the Council sought a more nuanced and context-specific understanding of the problems confronting adolescents in the developing world. At any given moment he can transform his pleasant speaking voice into a raspy, aged, Middle Eastern-by-way-of-New York accent - or a deep Southern drawl. In an instant he can switch from a precise West African dialect to hip, urban street lingo, and then effortlessly segue back to his normal voice. Recent evidence suggests that many signaling molecules localize in microdomains of the plasma membrane, particularly caveolae. In this study, overexpression of adenylyl cyclase was used as a functional probe of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) compartmentation. We found that three endogenous receptors in neonatal rat cardiomyocytes couple with different levels of efficiency to the activation of adenylyl cyclase type 6 (AC6), which localizes to caveolin-rich membrane fractions. Overexpression of AC6 enhanced the maximal cAMP response to β1-adrenergic receptor (β1AR)-selective activation 3.7-fold, to β2AR-selective activation only 1.6-fold and to prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) not at all. The article describes the status of the communication across the curriculum (CXC) movement from the perspectives of CXC directors across the U.S. as of May 2001. The participants in this study provide a breadth of information about the daily life of communication across the curriculum programs nationwide. A recombinant human prostasin serine protease was expressed in several human cell lines. Subcellular fractionation showed that this serine protease is synthesized as a membrane-bound protein while a free-form prostasin is secreted into the culture medium, Prostasin was identified in nuclear and membrane fractions. Membrane-bound prostasin can be released by phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C treatment, or labeled by [H-3]ethanolamine, indicating a glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchorage. A prostasin-binding protein was identified in mouse and human seminal vesicle fluid. Both the secreted and the membrane-bound prostasin were able to form a covalently linked 82-kDa complex when incubated with seminal vesicle fluid. The complex formation between …

Since little is known of how the primitive protozoan parasite, Giardia lamblia, senses and responds to its changing environment, we characterized a giardial protein kinase A (gPKA) catalytic subunit with unusual subcellular localization. Sequence analysis of the 1080-base pair open reading frame shows 48% amino acid identity with the cyclic AMP-dependent kinase from Euglena gracilis, Northern analysis indicated a 1.28-kilobase pair transcript at relatively constant concentrations during growth and encystation, gPKA is autophosphorylated, although amino acid residues corresponding to Thr-197 and Ser-338 of human protein kinase A (PKA) that are important for autophosphorylation are absent, Kinetic analysis of the recombinant …

Statistics show the American population is aging at an explosive rate. The correlation between fitness and the aging process is once again becoming a ripe area for study. Previous studies show that fitness can improve quality of life and health for the elderly. A new defined category of seniors known as the young-old has emerged. Peer relationships and self-esteem among early adolescents, as well as the relationship between the two, have been studied by various researchers in the past. The purpose of this correlational study was to determine the strength of the relationship between early adolescents' peer relationship problems and self: esteem. Specifically, this research studied early adolescents in grades five through eight in one suburban, White, middle class elementary school and three suburban, White, middle class junior high schools. A comparative study was conducted on the attitudes toward older adults between Counselors and Non Counselors. The participants included 50 Licensed Professional Counselors from the state of Missouri, who are registered members of the American Counseling Association (ACA), and 33 Graduate students from Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Missouri, who are enrolled in graduate programs unrelated to professional counseling. The participants completed a demographic questionnaire and the Facts on Aging Quiz' (FAQl). The demographic questionnaire contained personal data, and the FAQ 1 measured attitudes and knowledge in five areas: correct answer, negative bias, positive bias, neutral, and don't know. The …
