Paper Session I-C - Atomic Force Microscopy Of Dna And Design Parameters For A Zero-G Operable Unit, Rolando Branly, Robert Friedfeld, Stephen F. Austin

Space Congress® Proceedings

The International Space Station will finally provide the opportunity of a permanent zerog laboratory facility where researchers could conceivably analyze the results of experiments in situ. There are numerous advantages to the rapid turn around of answers provided by this environment. A team of researchers and students in cooperation with the Florida Space Institute have imaged DNA and other biological specimens in an attempt to define the basic design parameters of a succesful AFM and STM unit for use in a zero-g environment such as ISS (Express Rack), Shuttle (Middeck Locker) and KC-135 (reduced gravity program). Neuromotor And Cognitive Development In Children With Cerebral Palsy In Relation To Neural Plasticity, Vaniecea Pollard May 2001

Neuromotor And Cognitive Development In Children With Cerebral Palsy In Relation To Neural Plasticity, Vaniecea Pollard

McCabe Thesis Collection

Infants with neurological disabilities, such as cerebral palsy (CP) and Down syndrome (DS), show severe delays in motor and cognitive development relative to chronological age. Involvement of neural plasticity as a treatment of such neurological disorders is increasingly being seen. Previous studies have found that interventions involving sensory linked motor performance have been critical in facilitating motor improvement. The purpose of this study was to compare self-initiated mobility in children with CP and DS. Three infants, ages 8, 9, and 22 months, with diagnoses of no CP, DS, and CP respectively, participated in the study. The infants were videotaped in …

Trophic Dynamics Of Pinniped Populations In Alaska Using Stable Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Ratios, Amy Hirons May 2001

Trophic Dynamics Of Pinniped Populations In Alaska Using Stable Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Ratios, Amy Hirons

Oceanography Faculty Theses and Dissertations

Trophic changes in populations of Stellar sea lions (Eumetorias jubatus), northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) and harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) in the eastern Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska were studied using stable isotope analysis. Declining populations of all three species of pinnipeds prompted this study to determine if changes in diet, likely resulting from food limitation, contributed to the declines. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios were analyzed in the vibrissae (whiskers) and body tissues of pinnipeds from 1993-1998 and compared with muscle tissue from prey species during the same time period to determine pinniped trophic dynamics. Vibrissae growth …

Vegetarianism In Russia: The Tolstoy(An) Legacy, Ronald D. Leblanc May 2001

Vegetarianism In Russia: The Tolstoy(An) Legacy, Ronald D. Leblanc

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

The collapse of communist rule in Russia at the beginning of the 1990s revived a whole series of social, cultural, and ideological phenomena that had either lain dormant or been almost entirely absent during the Soviet period, phenomena ranging from pornography and prostitution to religion and real estate. Vegetarianism, which had been demonized under Stalin as a pernicious and insidiously "anti-scientific" doctrine promulgated by the ideologues of the exploitative classes in the capitalist West, experienced a revival that began during the glasnost' years; it has continued to remain popular in post communist Russia as well. The Vegetarian Society of the …

Association Between The 15-Kda Selenoprotein And Udp-Glucose:Glycoprotein Glucosyltransferase In The Endoplasmic Reticulum Of Mammalian Cells, Konstantin V. Korotkov, Easwari Kumaraswamy, You Zhou, Dolph L. Hatfield, Vadim N. Gladyshev May 2001

Gladyshev

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Mammalian selenocysteine-containing proteins characterized with respect to function are involved in redox processes and exhibit distinct expression patterns and cellular locations. A recently identified 15-kDa selenoprotein (Sep15) has no homology to previously characterized proteins, and its function is not known. Here we report the intracellular localization and identification of a binding partner for this selenoprotein which implicate Sep15 in the regulation of protein folding. The native Sep15 isolated from rat prostate and mouse liver occurred in a complex with a 150-kDa protein. The latter protein was identified as UDP-glucose:glycoprotein glucosyltransferase (UGTR), the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-resident protein, which was previously shown …

Status Of The Double-Crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax Auritus) In North America, Linda R. Wires, Francesca J. Cuthbert, Dale R. Trexel, Anup R. Joshi May 2001

Status Of The Double-Crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax Auritus) In North America, Linda R. Wires, Francesca J. Cuthbert, Dale R. Trexel, Anup R. Joshi

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Introduction: Since the late-1970s, numbers of Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) (DCCO) have increased significantly in many regions of North America. A variety of problems, both real and perceived, have been associated with these increases, including impacts to aquaculture, sport and commercial fisheries, natural habitats, and other avian species. Concern is especially strong over impacts to sport and commercial fishes and aquaculture. Because of increasing public pressure on U.S. government agencies to reduce DCCO conflicts, the USFWS is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), and in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Wildlife Services (USDA/WS) and state resource …

Factors Influencing Milk Consumption In An Elementary School Lunch Program, Andrea G. Payne May 2001

Factors Influencing Milk Consumption In An Elementary School Lunch Program, Andrea G. Payne

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This study investigated milk consumption in an elementary school and whether it could be affected by milk temperature and/or nutrition education. This study was of interest because of the increasing amount of nutritionally related diseases, and the effect that calcium intake could have in diminishing some of those diseases. It was also of interest because the younger generation is drinking less milk and more soda, therefore setting themselves up for nutritionally related diseases later in life.

The study was conducted at an elementary school containing grades K-5. The study was conducted Monday through Friday for a seven week time period. …

Terrorism: Local Government Response, Richard T. Boswell May 2001

Terrorism: Local Government Response, Richard T. Boswell

Theses & Honors Papers

Every community in America has the potential to be the target of a terrorist attack. When this attack occurs it is the responsibility of local government agencies to combat the problem. These agencies lack many of the resources needed to successfully deal with these types of attacks. Furthermore, many local governments are under the illusion that the federal government and all of its resources will quickly arrive and assume control of the operation.

Anglophone Friend Or Foe?, Thomas L. Bernard May 2001

Anglophone Friend Or Foe?, Thomas L. Bernard

Word Ways

I watched a World War II program about how the Germans recruited a group of soldiers who could speak English (or thought that they could) to infiltrate American lines and cause havoc. Even though dressed in U.S. uniforms, they soon ran into difficulties as a result of their English language knowledge and usage; for example, some of them were only familiar with British English. This situation transported me in my mind back to the Revolutionary war. I doubted that there was a great deal of language difference in those days between the speech of the British and the Colonials, but …
