The Effect Of Age-Related Stereotypes On Memory Self-Efficacy And Memory Task-Performance Of Older Adults, Brenda Karns May 2001

The Effect Of Age-Related Stereotypes On Memory Self-Efficacy And Memory Task-Performance Of Older Adults, Brenda Karns

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Forty-six older adults participated in a study to examine the hypothesis that there is a significant association between stereotypes of age-related memory decline and memory self-efficacy beliefs. It was also hypothesized that this relationship affects performance on measures of memory performance. A measure of age stereotype vulnerability was assessed along with two measures of memory self-efficacy, four measures of implicit, explicit, and working memory, and two measures of implicit and explicit sequential learning. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the relationships among stereotypes of age, memory self-efficacy, and subsequent performance on various tasks of memory and learning. Emphasis was …

Icam-1 Transmembrane Signaling: Involvement Of Taxreb107 In Icam-1-Mediated Signal Transduction, Brian Lee May 2001

Icam-1 Transmembrane Signaling: Involvement Of Taxreb107 In Icam-1-Mediated Signal Transduction, Brian Lee

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The role of membrane ICAM-1 in intercellular adhesion, through interaction with the leukocyte beta2 integrin receptors LFA-1 and Mac-1, is well established. However, until recently, ICAM-1 was widely regarded as being simply an "anchor" molecule, promoting, for example, firm adhesion of lymphocytes to vascular endothelial cells. The demonstration that ICAM-1 is connected to the actin-based cytoskeleton through interactions with subcortical actin-binding proteins, such as alpha-actinin, enhanced this concept. However, ICAM-1 has been increasingly shown to have signaling properties of its own. Engagement of ICAM-1 extracellularly, either through its natural counter-receptors, LFA-1/Mac-1, or through antibody mediated clustering, can produce numerous changes …

Intercultural Interaction Of Russian-American Space Crews, Suzan Kiesel

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

NASA has recently directed the United States into the largest global partnership in U.S. history — the development of an International Space Station. In order to collaborate successfully in this unique setting, participants must develop a strong sense of teamwork, camaraderie, and partnership. Previous research indicates a variety of factors, such as differences in cultural background and environmental factors, that may affect the ability to develop these successful relationships. This study analyzes cultural variance and disclosure dynamics between Russian cosmonauts and American astronauts.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Three-Dimensional Reconstructions Of The Brain Of A Fetal Common Dolphin, Delphinus Delphis, Lori Marino, Timothy L. Murphy, Lyad Gozal, John I. Johnson

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

To demonstrate the kinds of data that can be obtained non-destructively and non-invasively from preserved museum specimens using modern imaging technology the head region of a whole body fetal specimen of the common dolphin, Delphinus delphis, aged 8–9 months post-conception, was scanned using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Series of scans were obtained in coronal, sagittal and horizontal planes. A digital three-dimensional reconstruction of the whole brain was prepared from the coronal series of scans. Sectional areas and three-dimensional volumes were obtained of the cerebral hemispheres and of the brainstemplus-cerebellum. Neuroanatomical features identified in the scans include the major sulci of …

16s Ribosomal Dna Terminal Restriction Fragment Pattern Analysis Of Bacterial Communities In Feces Of Rats Fed Lactobacillus Acidophilus Ncfm, Christopher W. Kaplan, Johanna C. Astaire, M. E. Sanders, Bandaru S. Reddy, Christopher L. Kitts

Biological Sciences

16S ribosomal DNA terminal restriction fragment patterns from rat fecal samples were analyzed to track the dynamics of Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM and discern bacterial populations that changed during feeding with NCFM. Lactobacillus johnsonii and Ruminococcus flavefaciens were tentatively identified as such bacterial populations. The presence of L. johnsonii was confirmed by isolation from feces.

Effect Of Forest Age On Density Of Stream-Breeding Amphibians In Skamania County, Washington, Craig A. Steele May 2001

Effect Of Forest Age On Density Of Stream-Breeding Amphibians In Skamania County, Washington, Craig A. Steele

Biology

Because the ranges of stream-breeding amphibians in the Pacific Northwest occur partly on industrial timberlands, it is valuable to study population distributions of these animals in forest environments that rarely reach old growth status and are subject to timber harvest on a regular basis. To determine how short-term changes in forest age affect the density of stream-breeding amphibians, first-order streams located on private industrial timberlands in Skamania County, Washington, were sampled during the summers of 1998 and 1999. Species captured included Dicamptodon tenebrosus, Dicamptodon copei, Rhyacotriton cascadae, and Ascaphus truei. Regression tree analysis showed that relative …

Switching Between Intensive And Extensive Searching In Predators Of Heterogeneously Distributed Prey, Zy Biesinger May 2001

Switching Between Intensive And Extensive Searching In Predators Of Heterogeneously Distributed Prey, Zy Biesinger

Biology

Many predators of patchily distributed prey are thought to increase their searching efficiency by alternating between extensive and intensive searching behavior. To test the effects of predator satiation and prey density on a ladybird's choice of searching mode, I performed experiments in which larvae of different hunger levels experienced different prey encounter rates. Using traditional measures, I found a beetle's satiation level to have no effect. The prey encounter rate had an effect on two of three traditional measures. Less traditional methods, fractal dimension analysis and Fourier slope analysis, supported the conclusions obtained using traditional measures. Analysis of movement patterns …

Assemblages Of Spiders On Shrubs In Semiarid Environments: Experimental Models Of Shrub Architecture, Michael W. Heikkinen May 2001

Assemblages Of Spiders On Shrubs In Semiarid Environments: Experimental Models Of Shrub Architecture, Michael W. Heikkinen

Biology

Assemblages of spiders on big sagebrush are dominated by salticids. The pattern could result from many salticids in the colonist pool and random distribution as spiders disperse or a selection process by which spiders are choosing to remain on big sagebrush after initial colonization. Choices may be based on insect prey on the shrubs or related to the plant's physical attributes. Habitat structure has been associated with the distribution of many animals, and plant architecture influences the distribution of spiders. Models of big sagebrush were constructed to test plant architecture variables that spiders may use as cues in deciding to …

Creative Marginality: Exploring The Links Between Conflict Resolution And Social Work, Jay Rothman, Randi Land Rothman, Mary Hope Schwoebel May 2001

Creative Marginality: Exploring The Links Between Conflict Resolution And Social Work, Jay Rothman, Randi Land Rothman, Mary Hope Schwoebel

Peace and Conflict Studies

The concept of creative marginality refers to the process through which researchers in academic fields move away from the mainstream and toward the margins of their fields and look toward the margins of other fields that may overlap with and fill in gaps in their fields. This interaction, occurring outside of disciplinary boundaries, promotes intellectual cross-fertilization, and it is often the site of innovation. This article examines the links and interactions between the academic disciplines and practices of social work and conflict resolution. The article describes the different theoretical frames and practical approaches of both social work and conflict resolution, …

Regulation Of Blastocyst Formation., A J Watson, L C Barcroft May 2001

Regulation Of Blastocyst Formation., A J Watson, L C Barcroft

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

Preimplantation or pre-attachment development encompasses the "free"-living period of mammalian embryogenesis, which directs development of the zygote through to the blastocyst stage. Blastocyst formation is essential for implantation, establishment of pregnancy and is a principal determinant of embryo quality prior to embryo transfer. Cavitation (blastocyst formation) is driven by the expression of specific sets of gene products that direct the acquisition of cell polarity within the trophectoderm, which is both the first epithelium of development and the outer cell layer encircling the inner cell mass of the blastocyst. Critical gene families controlling these events include: the E-cadherin-catenin cell adhesion family, …

Estimation Of Forest Stand Parameters And Application In Classification And Change Detection Of Forest Cover Types In The Brazilian Amazon Basin, Dengsheng Lu May 2001

Estimation Of Forest Stand Parameters And Application In Classification And Change Detection Of Forest Cover Types In The Brazilian Amazon Basin, Dengsheng Lu

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses on measurement of forest stand parameters using remote sensing which is applied to classification and change detection of tropical successional and mature forests in selected areas in the Brazilian Amazon Basin. Three study areas, Altamira, Bragantina, and Pedras, each with different biophysical environments, were selected for this research. Previous research has indicated that relationships between selected stand parameters and remotely sensed data are not clearly understood, especially in tropical areas. Rarely has remote sensing research been successfully conducted in quantitative estimation of forest stand parameters (e.g. biomass) and identification of vegetation growth stages. In this research, atmospherically …

Cluster Computing In The Classroom: Topics, Guidelines, And Experiences, Amy Apon, Rajkumar Buyya, Hai Jin, Jens Mache

Publications

With the progress of research on cluster computing, more and more universities have begun to offer various courses covering cluster computing. A wide variety of content can be taught in these courses. Because of this, a difficulty that arises is the selection of appropriate course material. The selection is complicated by the fact that some content in cluster computing is also covered by other courses such as operating systems, networking, or computer architecture. In addition, the background of students enrolled in cluster computing courses varies. These aspects of cluster computing make the development of good course material difficult. Combining our …
