Paper Session Iii-B - Continuing Legacy Of The Space Test Program, Charles J. Finley May 2001

Paper Session Iii-B - Continuing Legacy Of The Space Test Program, Charles J. Finley

Space Congress® Proceedings

During the 1960’s, it became apparent that the Department of Defense (DoD) needed to develop space systems technologies at a rapid rate. Furthermore, the DoD realized that in order to develop and deploy reliable space systems for operational use, they first must test them in space. At that time no organization or funds were readily available to provide timely spaceflight for experiments and demonstrations with military relevance. As a result, the Director of Defense Research and Engineering (DDR&E) wrote a memorandum and created the DoD Space Test Program (STP) in 1966.1

The mission of STP is to protect US space …

Effective Strategies For Managing Adhd Students In The Classroom, Merri Owen May 2001

Effective Strategies For Managing Adhd Students In The Classroom, Merri Owen

Theses and Dissertations

With so many school-age children being identified ADHD or ADD, many teachers as well as administrators feel ill-prepared to handle these students in their classrooms. The purpose of this study was to determine procedures teachers use effectively to manage ADHD students' behavior in their classrooms. It was also used to determine if a differential relationship exists between the willingness of upper elementary teachers and lower elementary teachers to accommodate ADHD students in their classrooms.

Forty-five teachers completed a survey to determine how frequently specific strategies were used and their perception of the effectiveness of these strategies. The teachers identified how …

Space Congress® Proceedings

An educational program was initiated during the Collaborative Ukrainian Experiment (CUE) in 1997. The CUE project was a series of plant experiments performed by Ukrainian cosmonaut, Leonid Kadenyuk, on Mission STS-87. A collaborative educational program was developed which was called "CUE-Teachers and Students Investigating Plants in Space (TSIPS)" in which students from both the U.S. and Ukraine conducted ground controls for the space experiments. The educational collaboration established during this project has continued with the development of other programs. These programs included the NASA SEEDS II project, the NASA Farming in Space Project, the International Water Institute and most recently, …

Paper Session Ii-C - Space Settlement Design: A Unifying Theme For Skill Development Through Scientific Inquiry, Susan N. Behel

Space Congress® Proceedings

Last July we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the first landing on the moon. Comparable scientific and technological advances will drive the 21st Century. Are our children ready? Recent studies by the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) report that U.S. students’ performance is unacceptable. International ranking across 17 nations shows eighth grade students in the United Sates perform poorly in both science and mathematics. In a comparison of achievement in scientific inquiry, the U.S. ranks thirteenth among the 38 nations participating in the study. This decline is a serious national …

Paper Session Ii-B - Smarter Software For Enhanced Vehicle Health Monitoring And Inter-Planetary Exploration, Charles H. Goodrich, William E. Larson May 2001

Paper Session Ii-B - Smarter Software For Enhanced Vehicle Health Monitoring And Inter-Planetary Exploration, Charles H. Goodrich, William E. Larson

Space Congress® Proceedings

The existing philosophy for space mission control was born in the early days of the space program when technology did not exist to put significant control responsibility onboard the spacecraft. NASA relied on a team of ground control experts to troubleshoot systems when problems occurred. As computing capability improved, more responsibility was handed over to the systems software. However, there is still a large contingent of both launch and flight controllers supporting each mission. New technology can update this philosophy to increase mission assurance and reduce the cost of inter-planetary exploration.

The advent of model-based diagnosis and intelligent planning software …

Paper Session Ii-B - Lunar And Martian Paleontology, Doug D. Shull May 2001

Paper Session Ii-B - Lunar And Martian Paleontology, Doug D. Shull

Space Congress® Proceedings

The discovery of organic material imbedded in the Martian Meteorite Alan Hills (AH) 84001 in 1996 changed science. Many people now consider the possibility that microbial life existed on or may still exist on the planet Mars. NASA, The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and the European Space Agency (ESA) are considering packages and experiments for future Mars robotic missions to detect the presence of microbial life near the surface of Mars. We should pursue these worthy efforts. However, the surfaces of Mars and the Moon may very well hold evidence of life, both microbial and macroscopic, from Earth’s past. I …

Comprehensive Isotachophoresis-Capillary Electrophoresis Coupled To Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry, Christopher Ryan Bowerbank May 2001

Comprehensive Isotachophoresis-Capillary Electrophoresis Coupled To Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry, Christopher Ryan Bowerbank

Theses and Dissertations

Isotachophoresis (ITP) coupled to capillary zone electrophoresis (CE) in a comprehensive manner was used to separate mixture components in both insufficient and sufficient concentrations without heart-cutting or splitting. Examples of comprehensive ITP-CE involving multiple CE injections of preconcentrated ITP zones are demonstrated. In the comprehensive arrangement, all of the sample in the first dimension (ITP) is subjected to analysis in the second dimension (CE), without significant sample loss or decrease in sample detectability resulting from removal of a portion of the sample. This is especially important for analytes at low concentrations which may form a single mixed zone instead of …

An Added Cost Of Production, Larry L. Bitney May 2001

An Added Cost Of Production, Larry L. Bitney

Cornhusker Economics

Agricultural producers typically consider death loss when budgeting costs and returns for a livestock enterprise. But, the cost of disposing of the dead animals has not typically been considered. In the past, rendering companies picked up animals free of charge. They received value from the hides, meat and bone meal, and other by-products.
