Biotechnology And International Law, Sean D. Murphy Jan 2001

Biotechnology And International Law, Sean D. Murphy

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Emerging applications in the field of biotechnology hold great promise for promoting the health and well-being of the global community, especially in developing states. Yet significant concerns have emerged about biotechnology in the transnational sphere, concerns that no doubt will increase in decades to come. The purpose of the article is to assess the strengths and limits of existing international norms and structures designed to address these concerns, and to suggest a means for augmenting current structures to make them more effective. International law develops and regulates transnational behavior in a manner that goes well beyond the development treaty regimes. …

History, Culture And Alcohol: Drinking Patterns In Poland And Australia, Barbara Wolska Jan 2001

History, Culture And Alcohol: Drinking Patterns In Poland And Australia, Barbara Wolska

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

It is a widely held view in Poland that for centuries those in power have promoted heavy drinking among their subjects in order to achieve their various goals and that this contributed to the development of Polish drinking patterns. There is some empirical evidence that the political economy of alcohol in Poland promoted heavy drinking among the Polish population. Drinking alcohol in Poland was an important aspect of social situations. The most popular beverage was vodka(s). Social pressure to drink in the extreme was attributed to the tradition of hospitality. Cultural norms encouraged very heavy drinking among men and imposed …

Client Weight As A Barrier To Non-Biased Clinical Judgment, Tricia Duncan Hassel, Carol J. Amici, Nancy S. Thurston, Richard L. Gorsuch

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

A sample of 95 Christian and 68 Non-Christian mental health professionals were given a picture of either an overweight or average-weight male or female client and a generic case vignette. Participants were asked to make clinical judgments of pathology and client attributions for the pictured client. Results indicated that mental health professionals ascribe more pathology and negative attributes to obese clients than to average-weight clients. In addition, Christian mental health professionals are just as likely as non-Christians to ascribe more negative attributes to obese clients. Ways to remove barriers to unbiased psychotherapy and deal with countertransference issues are discussed from …

The Effect Of Valproic Acid On Motility And Morphometry Parameters, And Actin And N-Cadherin Distribution In Avian Neural Crest Cells, Leah Christine Fuller Jan 2001

The Effect Of Valproic Acid On Motility And Morphometry Parameters, And Actin And N-Cadherin Distribution In Avian Neural Crest Cells, Leah Christine Fuller

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

All vertebrate species contain a transient ectodermal structure termed the neural crest from which a specific subpopulation of migratory cells, the neural crest cells (NCCs), is derived. Following an epithelial-mesenchymal transition, NCCs actively migrate throughout the developing embryo. Precise temporal and spatial cellular migration is essential for the formation of a diverse array of neural crest derived tissues and structures. Valproic acid (VP A) is a unique anti-convulsant drug that can produce craniofacial and neural tube defects in exposed infants. Alterations of NCC migration, proliferation, and cytoskeletal composition have been proposed as mechanisms of VP A's teratogenicity. To investigate this …

Public Relations And Branding On The Web, Gayle M. Pohl Jan 2001

Public Relations And Branding On The Web, Gayle M. Pohl

Iowa Journal of Communication

David Snyder, a trend analyst and Life Styles Editor of the Futurist states sales via the Internet totaled $6 billion in 1998 and could reach $300 billion by 2002. He says the use of the Internet is doubling every 100 days and people are getting more comfortable conducting transactions over the use of branding to make products and services and images stand out. A strong brand can transcend the product by tapping into consumer needs. In fact, organizations would be wise to think in terms of global brands to take advantage of economies of scale. This article addresses the issue …

Eradication Of Biofilm-Forming Staphylococcus Epidermidis (Rp62a) By A Combination Of Sodium Salcylate And Vancomycin, Roy E. Polonio, Leonard A. Mermel, Gregory E. Paquette, Jay F. Sperry Jan 2001

Eradication Of Biofilm-Forming Staphylococcus Epidermidis (Rp62a) By A Combination Of Sodium Salcylate And Vancomycin, Roy E. Polonio, Leonard A. Mermel, Gregory E. Paquette, Jay F. Sperry

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a major cause of infections associated with indwelling medical devices. Biofilm production is an important virulence attribute in the pathogenesis of device-related infections. Therefore, elimination of these biofilms is an ideal treatment. Salicylate (5 mM) combined with 1 μg of vancomycin per ml inhibited biofilm formation by S. epidermidis (RP62A) by ≥99.9%. When biofilm-coated polystyrene beads were exposed to 5 mM sodium salicylate and 4 μg of vancomycin per ml (one-half the minimum biofilm eradication concentration), there was a >99.9% reduction in viable count.

The Caregiver Quality Of Life Cystic Fibrosis (Cqolcf) Scale: Development And Validation, Whitney Boling Jan 2001

The Caregiver Quality Of Life Cystic Fibrosis (Cqolcf) Scale: Development And Validation, Whitney Boling

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this study was to modify the Caregiver Quality of Life Index-Cancer Scale, develop it as the Caregiver Quality of Life Cystic Fibrosis (CQOLCF) Scale, and validate it in the CF family caregiver population. Another purpose of this study was to create a disease-specific instrument that assessed the CF family caregivers perception of their quality of life. Three research questions guided this investigation into assessing the quality of life of CF family caregivers: (a) Is the CQOLCF a reliable instrument for assessing quality of life in CF family caregivers? (b) Is the CQOLCF a valid instrument for assessing …

Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Solar-Dried Mangoes And High-Dose Vitamin A Supplements In Improving The Vitamin A Status Of Gambian Children, Bakary Seihou Drammeh Jan 2001

Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Solar-Dried Mangoes And High-Dose Vitamin A Supplements In Improving The Vitamin A Status Of Gambian Children, Bakary Seihou Drammeh

All ETDs from UAB

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a public health problem in the world. Carotene-rich foods may prevent VAD. We tested the effectiveness of mangoes on vitamin A status in a region with subclinical VAD. We randomized 176 rural Gambian children aged 2–7 y to receive 1 of 4 treatments: 75 g dried mango (rehydrated before eating) plus 5 g fat 5 d/wk for 4 mo (MF), ( n = 44); 75 g dried mango without fat 5 d/wk for 4 mo (M), ( n = 45); one 200,000 IU vitamin A capsule at baseline (A), ( n = 44); or one …

Examination Of Selected Prenatal Wic Program Components In Alabama Counties With Contrasting Rates Of Low Birth Weight, James Vernon Langie Jr Jan 2001

Examination Of Selected Prenatal Wic Program Components In Alabama Counties With Contrasting Rates Of Low Birth Weight, James Vernon Langie Jr

All ETDs from UAB

In 1994 there were marked differences in rates of low birth weight (LBW) infants at the county level in Alabama despite the relatively high overall level of prenatal participation by eligible women (approximately 70%) in the Women Infants and Children (WIC) program. Because LBW has a multifactorial etiology, regardless of how it is defined, this study examined the question of whether there were differences in WIC program and participant characteristics in Alabama counties with overall low rates of LBW compared with counties with high overall rates of LBW in 1994. When county-level data for WIC program characteristics were examined for …
