Spatial Variability And Isotopic Studies Of The Prairie -Forest Transition Soil In Louisiana., Asfaw Bekele Jan 2001

Spatial Variability And Isotopic Studies Of The Prairie -Forest Transition Soil In Louisiana., Asfaw Bekele

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The calcareous prairies of Louisiana are among the most endangered ecosystems in North America. The major threat to this ecosystem is the invasion by woody and herbaceous plants, primarily eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana ). The restoration and management of these rare plant communities require a thorough understanding of the soils supporting them. Geostatistical, fractal, and stable isotopic procedures were integrated to study the soil and vegetation spatial variability. The prairie soil was alkaline, the forest soil was acidic, and the transition soil was neutral. The spherical model described the spatial variability of virtually all the soil properties considered with …

Effect Of Chromium, Dried Brewers Yeast, And Mannan Oligosaccharides On Sow Productivity And Growth Performance Of Weanling Pigs., Frederick Masson Lemieux Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Five experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of mannan oligosaccharides (Bio-Mos) on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and pork quality of pigs. The first two experiments evaluated 0.20 and 0.30% Bio-Mos. The data indicated that the 0.20% level of Bio-Mos was more effective, and this level was used in the remainder of the experiments. Interactive effects of Bio-Mos and excess dietary Zn were evaluated in Exp. 2 and 3 and Trial 2 of Exp. 4. In Trial 1 of Exp. 4, Bio-Mos was fed with and without an antibiotic. In addition to the weanling pig experiments, 0.30% Bio-Mos was fed …

Physicochemical, Functional And Spectroscopic Analysis Of Crawfish Chitin And Chitosan As Affected By Process Modification., Sandeep Kumar Rout Jan 2001

Physicochemical, Functional And Spectroscopic Analysis Of Crawfish Chitin And Chitosan As Affected By Process Modification., Sandeep Kumar Rout

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Traditional isolation of chitin from crawfish shells involves three sequential steps: demineralization (DM, removing calcium carbonate/phosphate), deproteinization (DP), and decolorization (DC, removing mainly astaxanthin). The first two steps can be reversed (i.e., DMP or DPM). Chitin is converted to chitosan by deacetylation (DA). Isolation steps may be shortened, depending on intended applications of chitosan. The first study investigated effects of (1) reversing sequence and (2) eliminating DP and DC steps on physicochemical and functional properties of chitosan and conversion efficiency of chitin. Twelve different processes: DM, DP, DPM, DMP, DPMC, DMPC, DMA, DMCA, DPMA, DMPA, DPMCA, DMPCA were investigated. DA …

An Analysis Of A Case Study Of A Secondary Alternative Education Program In Brazil: Lessons For The United States, Charlene Marette Claye

Theses and Dissertations

This research study examined the effect of the Freirean Theory of Education on one alternative secondary education program for at-risk students in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. The learning theory, curriculum, and instructional methods were examined to determine the extent of the influence of Paulo Freire's Theory of Education, the extent of practice, and the extent to which faculty, students, and community members think it should be practiced. From this research, lessons were abstracted for use in schools in the United States. Brazil was chosen because of its shared history with the United States of slavery, colonialism, and oppression of people …

Interdisciplinary Education At Academic Health Centers: Attitudes And Barriers Affecting Its Delivery, Stephanie F. Gardner Jan 2001

Interdisciplinary Education At Academic Health Centers: Attitudes And Barriers Affecting Its Delivery, Stephanie F. Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

Interdisciplinary care is a method of providing patient care that incorporates the efforts of various health care providers. Studies show this approach can improve patient care and decrease overall costs to the healthcare system. Despite the evidence for the benefits of interdisciplinary care, there are no well-defined models for training students during their didactic years to become members of an interdisciplinary team. This study determines the attitudes of administrators of professional schools toward interdisciplinary education, identifies perceived barriers to interdisciplinary education, examines the extent to which interdisciplinary education is occurring at academic health center campuses, and identifies the courses that …

Caretakers And Collaborators, Maxwell Gregg Bloche Jan 2001

Caretakers And Collaborators, Maxwell Gregg Bloche

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

A chilling subplot in the twentieth-century saga of state-sponsored mass murder, torture, and other atrocities was the widespread incidence of medical complicity. Nazi doctors’ human “experiments” and assistance in genocidal killing are the most oft-cited exemplar, but wartime Japanese physicians’ human vivisection and other grotesque practices rivaled the Nazi medical horrors. Measured by these standards, Soviet psychiatrists’ role in repressing dissent, Latin American and Turkish military doctors’ complicity in torture, and even the South African medical profession’s systematic involvement in apartheid may seem, to some, almost prosaic. Yet these and other reported cases of medical complicity in human rights abuse …

Crop Response And Weed Control With Glufosinate In Rice., David Yves Lanclos Jan 2001

Crop Response And Weed Control With Glufosinate In Rice., David Yves Lanclos

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Studies were conducted to evaluate crop tolerance and yield of glufosinate-resistant rice lines treated with glufosinate throughout the season. In addition, studies were conducted on harvested seed treated with glufosinate at various growth stages to evaluate seed weights, germination, and seedling vigor. Weed control with glufosinate alone and in combination with other herbicides was evaluated. Red rice control with different glufosinate rates and timings under 5, 10, and 20 cm permanent flood depths was also evaluated. In the tolerance study, CPRS PB-13 injury was less than 10% for all timings and no differences in yield were detected when compared with …

Obstacles In Recruiting African Americans For Clinical Trials., Betty Monroe Kennedy Jan 2001

Obstacles In Recruiting African Americans For Clinical Trials., Betty Monroe Kennedy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Previous abusive clinical trials have caused several obstacles in recruiting African Americans for clinical trials today. The memory of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study alone remains a hard pill to swallow and is a constant hindrance to recruiting potential African Americans specifically males, for clinical trials. The basic trust that African Americans have for physician researchers, U.S. government doctors, U.S. government-sponsored research, and biomedical research in general has been seriously, although not irrevocably, breached. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs African Americans have that support decisions to either participate or not …

Treatment Outcome Of Childhood Obesity: The Effect Of Children's Psychological Distress And Problematic Behavior., Tana Louise Hope Jan 2001

Treatment Outcome Of Childhood Obesity: The Effect Of Children's Psychological Distress And Problematic Behavior., Tana Louise Hope

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The number of children and adolescents effected by obesity has been increasing over the past 30 years. Current treatment of childhood obesity focuses primarily on increasing physical activity, modifying diet, providing nutritional education and teaching self-monitoring and stimulus control procedures. Although children have been shown to lose weight by participating in these treatment programs, the amount of weight children lose during treatment is often small, and long-term maintenance of weightloss continues to be challenging for many. Given the relatively weak outcome of childhood obesity treatment programs, research into factors that effect treatment outcome is needed. Psychological distress and problematic behavior …

Reversibility Of The Temperature-Dependent Opacity Of Nonfat Mozzarella Cheese, R. I. Dave, Donald J. Mcmahon, Jeff Broadbent, C. J. Oberg Jan 2001

Reversibility Of The Temperature-Dependent Opacity Of Nonfat Mozzarella Cheese, R. I. Dave, Donald J. Mcmahon, Jeff Broadbent, C. J. Oberg

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Salted and unsalted nonfat mozzarella cheese was made by direct acidification and stored at 4 degrees C over 60 d. Changes in cheese opacity were measured by using reflectance L* values while the cheese was heated from 10 to 90 degrees C, then cooled to 10 degrees C, and reheated to 90 degrees C. A characteristic opacity transition temperature (T(OP)) was obtained for each cheese. Both salt content and storage time influenced T(OP). Opacity during heating, cooling, and reheating formed a hysteresis. At d 1, the unsalted cheese became opaque when heated to 20 degrees C, but the salted cheese …

Integration & Biocomplexity, Lakshman Guruswamy Jan 2001

Integration & Biocomplexity, Lakshman Guruswamy

Publications

Sustainable development (SD) is premised on the inescapable and integral role played by humans in shaping and impacting the natural world and has been recognized as a foundational norm of international environmental law and policy. Ecologicalism - an outlook that embraces a comprehensive approach to interdependent natural and human systems - provides the conceptual underpinnings for a creative and integrated environmental management philosophy for implementing SD. This Article argues that the daunting task of defining and applying such an integrated approach and philosophy to the multiple interacting changes affecting planetary life support systems can benefit from the U.S. experience in …

Exploring Organizational Learning Of The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service: A Qualitative Study Involving Parish Chairs Of Less Than Three Years Experience., Cathy Hirsch Hamilton Jan 2001

Exploring Organizational Learning Of The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service: A Qualitative Study Involving Parish Chairs Of Less Than Three Years Experience., Cathy Hirsch Hamilton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This qualitative study was designed to facilitate the description, analysis and utilization of continual learning within the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES). The research linked exploration of a learning culture within an organization with the reflective practice of participatory action research methodology. Learning organizations promote knowledge sharing that allows for individual learning to make the transition into collective organizational learning. In order for transformative learning to occur, individuals must reflect on their actions to make sense of an experience. Explaining and thinking about what one is doing makes tacit knowledge explicit, therefore able to be shared and used for change. …

Epidemiology Of Salmonella In The Green Iguana (Iguana Iguana)., Mark Anthony Mitchell Jan 2001

Epidemiology Of Salmonella In The Green Iguana (Iguana Iguana)., Mark Anthony Mitchell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The incidence of iguana-associated salmonellosis reported in humans during the 1990's is a public health concern. This research is the first attempt to describe the epidemiology of Salmonella in the green iguana. Seasonal prevalence of Salmonella in green iguanas and their environment were estimated at a commercial iguana farm in El Salvador. The prevalence of Salmonella was lower in adult iguanas (44%) than in yearlings (50%) (Odds ratio (OR): 0.77, 95% Confidence Intervals (CI): 0.6--0.96) and higher in male iguanas (50%) than females (41%) (OR: 1.5, 95% CI: 1.2--1.8). Salmonella recovery was lower in the fall (41%) sampling period than …

Analysis And Mathematical Modeling Of Autonomously Oscillating Yeast Cultures., Abdelqader M. Zamamiri Jan 2001

Analysis And Mathematical Modeling Of Autonomously Oscillating Yeast Cultures., Abdelqader M. Zamamiri

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The conditions that precede the onset of autonomous oscillations in continuous yeast cultures were studied in three different types of experiments. It was found that the final state of the culture depends on the protocol used to start-up the reactor. Reaching the desired operating point by slow dilution rate changes gave rise to different final states, two oscillatory states and one steady state, depending on the rate of change in dilution rate. The multiplicity of stable states at a single operating point is not explained by current distributed models and points towards a segregated mechanism of these oscillations. The ability …

Penn And West Philadelphia, Dale Mezzacappa Jan 2001

Penn And West Philadelphia, Dale Mezzacappa

Partnerships/Community

May 13, 1985, was one of the most tragic days in the history of Philadelphia. ln an effort to dislodge the troublesome back-to-nature group MOVE, the police department bombed its row house, inadvertently setting off a fire that engulfed two city blocks, displaced 53 families, and killed 11 people. It's hard to imagine that anything good could come out of an event like this, but it did. The MOVE fire served as the catalyst that propelled the fledgling West Philadelphia Improvement Corps into what is now one of the most far-reaching collaborations between an urban university and the schools in …

Troxel And The Limits Of Community, Margaret F. Brinig Jan 2001

Troxel And The Limits Of Community, Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

The Troxel grandparent-visitation case that frames this symposium, the Washington statute included in Troxel, the mercifully completed odyssey of Cuban-born Elian Gonzalez, and the "right to die" case of Hugh Finn all illustrate both the fervor with which the broader community justifies its involvement with families and the extremes to which this involvement can spread. Using constitutional language, advocates point out the rights of extended family members to continue or strengthen ties to children, whether adult or minor. On the other side, parents and spouses claim their own rights not to have outsiders second-guess or interfere with their decisions.

Though …

Olfactory Behavior In Apoe Knockout Mice, John P. Yost Jan 2001

Olfactory Behavior In Apoe Knockout Mice, John P. Yost

Masters Theses

Apolipoprotein E (apoE), a lipid transporting protein, has been shown to play a vital role in nerve repair and remodeling. Since the olfactory system is in a continuous state of remodeling, the present study tested the hypothesis that apoE is required for normal functioning of the olfactory system. Olfactory function of the wild type (WT) and apoE deficient (apoE KO) mice was assessed by using three standard olfactory tests: 1) the buried food pellet (BFP) test; 2) the odor choice (OC) test; and 3) the odor cued taste avoidance (OCTA) test. The visible food pellet test (VFP) was not used …

The Effects Of Strength Training On The Bone Mineral Density Of Aerobically Trained Perimenopausal Women, Jill Marie Kowalski Jan 2001

The Effects Of Strength Training On The Bone Mineral Density Of Aerobically Trained Perimenopausal Women, Jill Marie Kowalski

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine if a strength training program has an effect on the bone mineral density of aerobically trained perimenopausal women. The study also hoped to determine if high intensity strength training with low repetitions will result in a greater increase in bone density as compared with low intensity strength training with high repetitions. The duration of the study was six months.

The participants were twenty-five aerobically trained perimenopausal female volunteers. They were randomly selected to be in one of three groups. Group 1 was the aerobic control where the participants continued with their aerobic …
