The Bioenergetics And Behaviour Of The Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) When Feeding On A Copper Contaminated Diet, Hamish Alistair Campbell
The Bioenergetics And Behaviour Of The Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) When Feeding On A Copper Contaminated Diet, Hamish Alistair Campbell
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The long-term effects of sub-lethal dietary Cu-exposure were investigated in relation to consequential energy shifts and resultant locomotory adaptation in 0. mykiss. This study represents the first to attempt to quantify the physiological cost of dietary heavy-metal exposure, the timing and extent of daily behavioural adaptation and resultant significance, in terms of ecologically important behaviours to the fish. Two long-term (2 & 3 months) dietary exposures of 730 mg Cu kgˉ¹ mg d.w. feed showed exposed fish to have a 3-fold increase in liver [Cu] and 10-fold increase in intestinal [Cu] compared to control fish. Consequently exposed fish elicited a …
Physiological And Biochemical Factors Affecting Carotenoid Utilization In Salmonid Fish, Gregory Ian Page
Physiological And Biochemical Factors Affecting Carotenoid Utilization In Salmonid Fish, Gregory Ian Page
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Carotenoid utilization in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) has been investigated with respect to tissue distribution of carotenoids and the role of the liver on the bioavailability of the lipid soluble carotenoids, astaxanthin and canthaxanthin. Species-specific and tissue-specific accumulations were noted for astaxanthin and canthaxanthin in the rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon, possibly indicating fundamental differences in their utilization in these species. The liver and the kidney were revealed to be the major tissues involved in carotenoid metabolism in both rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon. Apparent digestibilities (-96% and -30% for rainbow trout and …

While literacy activities for young children was a suggested theme, presenters were allowed to present on a topic of personal interest or commitment. All teachers and assistant teachers in the program were encouraged to attend the sessions. Credit for …
Survival Of Canine Epididymal Sperm Under Cooled And Frozen-Thawed Conditions, Karla Stilley
Survival Of Canine Epididymal Sperm Under Cooled And Frozen-Thawed Conditions, Karla Stilley
LSU Master's Theses
The objective of the first experiment was to determine the effects of storage at 22„aC vs. 4„aC on the motility and percentage of membrane-intact sperm (%MIS) of epididymal mouse sperm. Testicles were allocated into 22„aC or 4„aC treatment groups and stored for 24 or 48 hours. Additional testicles were allocated into the 4„aC treatment for storage for 72 or 96 hours. Sperm was collected and analyzed at each time point. Storage at 22„aC lowered motility and %MIS (P<0.05) when compared with control sperm and 4„aC sperm at both the 24 and 48 hours. Motility and %MIS of 4„aC sperm did not decrease when compared with the control until after 72 hours of storage. The second experiment evaluated the effects of 22„aC vs. 4„aC storage for 24 and 48 hours on epididymal dog sperm. Motility and %MIS of the 22„aC sperm was lower than that of the 4„aC sperm and the control (P<0.05) at 24 and 48 hours. Motility of the 4„aC sperm was lower than the control at 24 and 48 hours (P<0.05), however %MIS was not lower than the control until 48 hours. The third experiment tested the effect of cryopreservation on epididymal dog sperm. Sperm was frozen immediately (A), after 48 hours at 4„aC in liquid (B) or after 48 hours at 4„aC of the whole testicle (C). Both pre-freeze (PF) and post-thaw (PT) motility and %MIS of B and C were lower than A (P<0.05). PT values were lower than PF values in all treatments (P<0.05). PT motility of B was lower than C (0 vs. 35.0¡Ó3.6%). Storage at 4„aC allows collection of motile epididymal mouse and dog sperm for several days after death. Dog testicles can be refrigerated for 2 days and epididymal sperm frozen with PT motility and %MIS of 35 and 62%.

Production Of Single-Cell Protein From Ram Horn Hydrolysate, Esabi̇ Başaran Kurbanoğlu
Turkish Journal of Biology
Candida utilis NRRL Y-900 was grown on horn hydrolysate for single-cell protein production. First, ram horns obtained from slaughterhouse in Erzurum were hydrolyzed by physical and chemical methods and crude horn hydrolysate (CHH) was obtained. The contents of protein, nitrogen, ash, some minerals, total sugars and amino acids of CHH were determined and it was seen that it has sufficient organic and inorganic materials to allow its use as a substrate source in the production of single-cell protein. The CHH was enriched by addition of yeast extract, glucose and KH_2PO_4. The effects of different CHH concentrations (1, 2, 3, 4, …

The familiar, sinking, demoralizing, feelings of shame, how many times have innocently asked questions or simple statements inflicted such desolation of character? A modest comparison of sibling assets or vulnerabilities can be an unintentional wound to the heart. Statements or questions such as, "Use your brain," "What's wrong with you?" "How did that happen?" "What were you thinking?" "You should be ashamed of yourself." or a simple laugh can be the familiar and innocent remarks of an unknowing parent or caregiver. Unfortunately, these remarks and others can have a negative impact on the fragile development of personality and self-understanding of …
Structural And Functional Characterization Of The Activator Of G-Protein Signaling 3 (Ags3), Michael Labranche Bernard
Structural And Functional Characterization Of The Activator Of G-Protein Signaling 3 (Ags3), Michael Labranche Bernard
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
AGS3 (Activator of G-protein Signaling 3) was isolated in yeast-based functional screen for receptor-independent activators of heterotrimeric G-proteins. To examine the role of AGS3 in mammalian signal processing, we defined the AGS3 sub domains involved in G-protein interaction, its selectivity for G-proteins and its influence on the activation state of G-protein. AGS3 co-immunoprecipitated with Gia3 from tissue lysates in a nucleotide dependent manner (GDP»GTPγS). The regions of AGS3 that bound Giα were localized to 4 thirty amino acid repeats (GPR - G-protein regulatory motif) in the carboxyl terminus (P463-S650), each of which were capable of binding Giα. AGS3-GPR domains selectively …

Evaluating Congressional Constitutional Interpretation: Some Criteria And Two Informal Case Studies, Mark V. Tushnet
Evaluating Congressional Constitutional Interpretation: Some Criteria And Two Informal Case Studies, Mark V. Tushnet
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
I begin this Essay by identifying some problems with conducting an empirical inquiry into Congress's performance in constitutional matters. I argue that there is actually only a small set of issues for which we have a reasonably clean record to evaluate. With the problems I have identified in the background, I then examine some aspects of Congress's performance in the impeachment of President William J. Clinton and, more briefly, some aspects of its response to a presidential military initiative taken without formal prior congressional endorsement. I conclude that Congress's performance in the impeachment, however flawed, was reasonably good, and that …

A Case Study Of Nairobi City Council's Decentralised Syphilis Screening Programme In Antenatal Clinics, Baker Ndugga Maggwa, Ian Askew, Elizabeth Mugwe, Bilhah Hagembe, Rick Homan
Reproductive Health
It has long been known that syphilis is one of the more serious sexually transmitted infections (STI), especially during pregnancy when, if untreated, at least 60 percent of infected women will experience an adverse pregnancy outcome. There has been renewed interest in its control and prevention because of its proven link with HIV transmission. In 1992, the Nairobi City Council (NCC) pilot-tested a decentralized approach to syphilis screening and management in a sample of their antenatal clinics. A case study was carried out to assess the effectiveness, readiness, and cost effectiveness of the NCC’s antenatal care program, with a focus …

Effect Of Corn Processing On Degradable Intake Protein Requirement Of Finishing Cattle, Rob Cooper, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Doug Jordan, Todd Milton
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Three finishing trials were conducted to determine effect of corn processing on degradable intake protein requirement of feedlot cattle. Finishing diets consisted of 82% processed corn which was either dry rolled, high moisture, or steam flaked. Degradable intake protein levels were achieved by adding 0 to 2.0% urea (DM basis) to the control diets. Estimates of degradable intake protein requirement for a dry-rolled corn-based diet were approximately 6.3% of dietary DM. Degradable intake protein requirement for high-moisture corn-based diets was approximately 10% of dietary DM. Degradable intake protein requirement for steam-flaked corn-based diet was between 7 and 9.5% of dietary …

Parents In Partnership With Children To Improve Student Readiness Skills, Glenda G. Miller
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
In compliance with Goal 1 of Goals 2000: Educate America Act of 1994 (U.S. Department of Education, 2001), all children should enter school with all developmental skills in place, ready to learn. In the 2000-2001 school year, educators reported that a large majority of kindergartners continued to enter school with less than the expected chronological-age-level skills, and it is their anticipation that this goal will continue to be unmet. Partially due to the lack of agreement on what readiness constitutes and the lack of availability of programs that are designed to focus on appropriate developmental programs for preschoolers, children continue …
The Association Of Food Cravings And Preferences With Food Intake, Corby Kyle Martin
The Association Of Food Cravings And Preferences With Food Intake, Corby Kyle Martin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
An ubiquitous assumption about food intake behavior is that people eat the types of foods that they crave and prefer. Food preferences reflect hedonic ratings of the degree to which people like certain foods. The present study investigated the association of food cravings and hedonic ratings with food intake behavior, assessed in the laboratory with a Universal Eating Monitor (Kissileff, Klingsberg, & Van Itallie, 1980). The study sample consisted of 162 adults who completed the Food Craving Inventory (FCI; White, Whisenhunt, Williamson, Greenway, & Netemeyer, 2001), a questionnaire that measures craving, including cravings for specific types of foods (i.e., High …
