All Children Can Learn: Providing Equal Education Opportunities For Migrant Students, Michelle R. Holleman Jan 2001

All Children Can Learn: Providing Equal Education Opportunities For Migrant Students, Michelle R. Holleman

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

The United States Supreme Court ruled that once a state undertakes to provide children with educational opportunities, such education services must be available to all children on equal terms. However, even though all states must offer a public education system, certain classes of children are not receiving equal educational opportunities. Migrant children are one of the most disadvantaged groups in today’s education system. Some of the unique challenges these children face include interrupted schooling, limited English proficiency, poverty, lack of health and nutrition, pressures from work and family responsibilities, and a lack of parental involvement in their education. These hurdles …

The Phenomenological Lived Experience Of Rheumatoid Arthritis., Monica Lena Iaquinta Jan 2001

The Phenomenological Lived Experience Of Rheumatoid Arthritis., Monica Lena Iaquinta

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Previous qualitative studies about the lived experience of persons with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have yielded common themes, such as becoming aware, seeking help, learning to live with the disease, and uncertainty (Brown & Williams, 1995; Ryan, 1996; Shaul, 1995, 1997; Yoshida, 1996). Gaps identified included lack of personalized guidance and support from health care providers, gender differences, and the active role of the patient in managing the disease (Brown & Williams, 1995; Ryan, 1996; Shaul 1995, 1997). This study addressed two of the three gaps previously mentioned: (a) personalized nursing care, and (b) patient as active manager of the disease. …

Depressed Men Angry Women: Non-Stereotypical Gender Responses To Anti-Smoking Messages In Older Smokers, Debora Brown Jan 2001

Depressed Men Angry Women: Non-Stereotypical Gender Responses To Anti-Smoking Messages In Older Smokers, Debora Brown

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This qualitative study into the effective use of fear arousal in social marketing advertising, focused on exploring gender differences in smokers' attitudes towards threats in anti-smoking messages in the 40 to 50 year old age group. This age group of smokers has received relatively little attention in the fear arousal literature to date, presumably because their 'hard core' attitudes are perceived as difficult to change by social marketing and medical practitioners. The key purpose of this study was to explore the attitudinal responses of male and female smokers in the 40 to 50 year old age group to anti-smoking messages …

The Effect Of Prescribed And Preferred Intensity Exercise On The Relationship Between Self-Efficacy And Perceived Exertion In Older Adults, Keith R. Scotson Jan 2001

The Effect Of Prescribed And Preferred Intensity Exercise On The Relationship Between Self-Efficacy And Perceived Exertion In Older Adults, Keith R. Scotson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study was concerned with acute responses to exercise in people over the age of 50 (N = 80). In particular the relationship between Self-efficacy and perceived exertion during exercise at workloads (a) based on a target heart rate (prescribed intensities) and (b) based on participant preference (preferred intensities) were observed. Perceptual (perceived exertion), Self-efficacy and heart rate responses of low active older participants engaged in either walking or cycle ergometer exercise at preferred and prescribed intensities were also reported. Significant inverse correlations were observed between pre and post exercise Self-efficacy and perceived exertion during acute exercise at prescribed intensities …

Environmental Law Slogans For The New Millenium, Michael Allan Wolf Jan 2001

Environmental Law Slogans For The New Millenium, Michael Allan Wolf

University of Richmond Law Review

Contrary to the bleakest predictions offered by environmental fatalists during the latter half of the 1900s, humanity and much of the plant and animal kingdom survived New Year's Eve 1999. Similarly, contrary to the dire warnings of industrial organizations and lobbyists that overburdening environmental regulations would spell the end of profitable, American capitalism, the year 2000 dawned in the United States with the world's most extensive array of anti-pollution and pro-conservation measures regulating the globe's most impressive economic engines.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Significant benefits have been gained with pre or peri-operative nutritional support in surgical patients with malnutrition. Recent studies have also shown that some enteral formulas including certain nutrients like glutamine could provide more benefit than the standard formulas. In this prospective-randomized study, the effects of perioperative oral supplement with enteral formulas containing glutamine in comparison with a standard enteral formula in patients who were operated on for GI malignancies were examined. Thirty-two patients were divided into two groups: the study group was given oral supplement with an elemental diet (Alitraq®) for 7 days preoperatively and 10 days postoperatively as 30-35% …

Effect Of Boron Application On The Yield And Quality Of Sugar Beet, Sai̇t Gezgi̇n, Mehmet Hamurcu, Mustafa Apaydin

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This research was conducted to determine the effects of application methods and the levels of boron on the root yield and quality of sugar beet in the Konya-Altınekin plain. The experimental soil was sandy loam, poor in organic matter and rich in calcium carbonate. The soil was alkaline in reaction and sufficient in boron content (0.55 ppm). In this work, three different levels of boron in borax form (0, 0.3 and 0.6 kg B/da) were applied with five different methods (soil, leaf, seed, soil + leaf, seed + leaf). The results showed that the root yield and refined sugar yield …

Farming Systems To Manage Salinity. Farmer Directed Research, Development And Extension. Research Results 2001, Richard Olive

Natural resources published reports

More and more of Western Australia's agnicultural lands are becoming saline. Currently it is estimated that about 18 milliion ha of land are affected to a greater or lesser degree by salinity causing production losses estimated at about $70 million a year.

Unless ways are found to halt and reverse the salinisation of land it is estimated that another 4.4 million ha could become saline over the next 50 years.

Grain growers and the Federal Government, through the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). are investing $12 4 million in R&D across Australia to develop productive solutions to the salinity …

Soilguide (Soil Guide) : A Handbook For Understanding And Managing Agricultural Soils, Geoff Allan Moore

Bulletins 4000 -

This handbook integrates the current knowledge of soils in south-western Australia in a user-friendly form. It describes how to assess which soil properties influence production and land degradation in the agricultural area and summarises management options to remedy or minimise soil limitations. The potential for growing a large range of crops and pastures can be assessed. In particular, the links between soil morphology, soil properties, management and agronomy are emphasised. The manual is designed for use at the paddock scale or for site assessment, but it can also be used at a catchment or regional scale. It is specifically designed …

International Criminal Justice From Paper To Practice - A Contribution From The International Criminal Tribunal For Rwanda To The Establishment Of The International Criminal Court, Adama Dieng Jan 2001

International Criminal Justice From Paper To Practice - A Contribution From The International Criminal Tribunal For Rwanda To The Establishment Of The International Criminal Court, Adama Dieng

Fordham International Law Journal

The international society's pursuit of international criminal justice entails the creation of a stateless jurisdiction with international scope that holds individuals, rather than States, responsible. As the institutions mandated to exercise international criminal jurisdiction begin to develop their operations, it becomes clear that the execution of justice entails a wide range of policy decisions normally undertaken by the State, in terms of legal aid, policing, education, and information, to mention but a few areas. The International Criminal Court may draw upon the wealth of operational experience of the Tribunals in these areas, but will nonetheless continue to develop its own …
