The Effects Of Windchill Exposure On The Snow Crab, Chionoecetes Opilio, Jonathan J. Warrenchuk Aug 2001

The Effects Of Windchill Exposure On The Snow Crab, Chionoecetes Opilio, Jonathan J. Warrenchuk

Fisheries

Millions of snow crabs, 'Chionoecetes opilio, ' are aerially exposed during sorting in the annual Bering Sea commercial fishery. A laboratory experiment measured snow crab responses to windchill exposure. Crabs were exposed to 8 to 16 m/s windspeed and air temperatures from -2 to -10 C̊ for 5 minutes. Mortality, autonomy, and righting response were assessed for seven days post-treatment. Crabs experienced 40% to 100% mortality at windchill from -10 to 16 C̊. Reduced exposure time significantly reduced mortality. Autonomy was variable but pronounced below -10 C̊ windchill. The righting response was impaired after all but the least severe treatment. …

Portrayal Vs. Reality: Images Of African Americans In Magazine Advertisements, Catherine Elizabeth Davis Aug 2001

Portrayal Vs. Reality: Images Of African Americans In Magazine Advertisements, Catherine Elizabeth Davis

Communication

The images of African Americans in magazine advertisements are changing. As these images change, researchers question whether or not African American socioeconomic and familial status are being accurately represented. George Gerbner's cultivation theory suggests that media play a role in shaping people's perceptions of minority groups. Using content analysis, this study compares the portrayal of African American socioeconomic and familial status in magazine advertisements with 1999 United States Census Bureau socioeconomic statistics of African Americans in the United States. This study found that a discrepancy exists between the portrayal and the reality of African American socioeconomic and familial status than …

Paleohydrology Of A Catastrophic Flood Release From Okmok Caldera And Post-Flood Eruption History At Okmok Volcano, Umnak Island, Alaska, Benjamin Alan Wolfe

Geosciences

Okmok caldera, located on the northeastern end of Umnak Island, Alaska, contained a 5.8 x 10⁹m³ lake that catastrophically drained as a result of failure of the 2050 yr. B.P. caldera rim between 1560 and 1010 yr. B.P. Flow competence equations, dam-break models, and the Simplified Dam-Break computer model were used to estimate the paleohydrology of the flood. Models indicate that the peak discharge at the breach in the caldera rim was at least 5.8 x 10⁴ m³/s, and the maximum possible discharge was 1.9 x 10⁶ m³/s. A second smaller flood release occurred 190 yr B.P., coinciding with the …

All the hardware to support the OEM GPS receiver in a reverse differential system was designed and built, including both a ground system and two flight systems to support both on-board storage and telemetry. A software program was developed to archive and compute positions from the raw data. The GPS system has been ground tested and flown on an Orion sounding rocket. …

Investigation Of North Pacific Sea Ice Anomalies In The Context Of Atmospheric And Oceanic Variability, Adrienne Tivy Aug 2001

Investigation Of North Pacific Sea Ice Anomalies In The Context Of Atmospheric And Oceanic Variability, Adrienne Tivy

Atmospheric Sciences

This study investigates the main mode of variability in North Pacific sea ice and examines the relationship between sea ice concentration and northern hemispheric climate variability for the period 1968-1997. Through empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis, correlations, and composite analysis, it was found that the seesaw pattern (first EOF of wintertime sea ice concentrations) between ice concentrations in the Bering Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk, generally used to characterize North Pacific sea ice, does not adequately address variability in the Sea of Okhotsk. Relationships between the sea ice dipole and the large-scale circulation were investigated and were found to …

Exchange Bias In A Generalized Meiklejohn-Bean Approach, Christian Binek Aug 2001

Exchange Bias In A Generalized Meiklejohn-Bean Approach, Christian Binek

Christian Binek Publications

A generalized Meiklejohn–Bean model is considered in order to derive an analytic expression for the dependence of the previous exchange bias term field on the layer thickness involved in ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic heterosystems, on the orientation of the applied magnetic field with respect to the magnetic easy axes and on the quenched magnetization MAF of the antiferromagnetic pinning layer. While MAF is a well-known feature of field-cooled dilute antiferromagnets, it seems to occur quite generally also in pure AF pinning substrates. The new analytic expressions are successfully compared with recent experimental results and Monte Carlo investigations.

Satellite Imaging Service Analysis Using Queueing Theory, Yan Mai, P.L. Palmer Aug 2001

Satellite Imaging Service Analysis Using Queueing Theory, Yan Mai, P.L. Palmer

Small Satellite Conference

Earth observation using small satellites is leaving demonstration status and being proposed for more and more commercial applications. By analysing such a service from both end-user and satellite operator point-of-view, it is hoped to provide the information such as service performance, on-board resource status and key parameters for system optimisation before the spacecraft is designed, launched and put into service. In this paper, queueing theory, traditionally used to perform tra_c and e_ciency analysis in tele-communication and other queueing system, is applied in this new area - a commercial imaging service using small satellites. The introduction of queueing theory in our …

Charge Transfer And X-Ray Emission Reactions Involving Highly Charged Ions And Neutral Hydrogen, J. A. Perez, Ronald E. Olson, P. Beiersdorfer Aug 2001

Charge Transfer And X-Ray Emission Reactions Involving Highly Charged Ions And Neutral Hydrogen, J. A. Perez, Ronald E. Olson, P. Beiersdorfer

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The electron capture from hydrogen by highly charged-bare ions was studied using a three-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method. The state-selective capture cross sections, calculated for a wide range of collision energies, were used to estimate x-ray emission cross sections. The capture process produced excited hydrogen-like ions and captured majority of electrons into one or two dopant states at low collision energies. The calculations predicted a large increase in the fraction of prompt x-rays produced with the lowering of the collision energy. The analysis suggested that ionization potential change for each collision and multiple capture played significant role in …

433 Eros Landing – Development Of Near Shoemaker’S Controlled Descent Sequence , Robert Nelson, Karl Whittenburg, Mark Holdridge

Small Satellite Conference

On February 12th, 2001, the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft made its historic descent to the surface of the asteroid 433 Eros, becoming the first spacecraft to soft land on a small celestial body. Development of the final descent activity offered the NEAR team a difficult technical challenge as the spacecraft had been designed solely as a free flyer, not as a lander. The NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft rendezvoused with 433 Eros on February 14th, 2000. Following an intensive year of orbital operations collecting science data at decreasingly lower altitudes, the spacecraft was prepared to conduct its final activity, descending from its current …
