Formation Of Ordered Ice Nanotubes Inside Carbon Nanotubes, Kenichiro Koga, G. T. Gao, Hideki Tanaka, Xiao Cheng Zeng
Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications
Following their discovery, carbon nanotubes have attracted interest not only for their unusual electrical and me-chanical properties, but also because their hollow interior can serve as a nanometre-sized capillary, mould, or template in material fabrication. The ability to en¬capsulate a material in a nanotube also offers new possibili¬ties for investigating dimensionally confined phase transi¬tions . Particularly intriguing is the conjecture that matter within the narrow confines of a carbon nanotube might ex¬hibit a solid–liquid critical point beyond which the distinc¬tion between solid and liquid phases disappears. This unusual feature, which cannot occur in bulk material, would allow for the direct …

Renormalization Of The Inverse Square Potential, Horacio E. Camblong
Renormalization Of The Inverse Square Potential, Horacio E. Camblong
Physics and Astronomy
The quantum-mechanical D-dimensional inverse square potential is analyzed using field-theoretic renormalization techniques. A solution is presented for both the bound-state and scattering sectors of the theory using cutoff and dimensional regularization. In the renormalized version of the theory, there is a strong-coupling regime where quantum-mechanical breaking of scale symmetry takes place through dimensional transmutation, with the creation of a single bound state and of an energy-dependent s-wave scattering matrix element.

Static-Electric-Field Behavior In Negative Ion Detachment By An Intense, High-Frequency Laser Field, M. V. Frolov, N. L. Manakov, B. Borca, Anthony F. Starace
Anthony F. Starace Publications
Based upon the exact numerical solution of the complex quasienergy problem for a 3-dimensional short-range potential as well as upon analytical evaluations, we demonstrate for any finite frequency ω that the action of an ultra-intense laser field (with electric vector F(ωt)) on a weakly bound atomic system may be described by the cycle-averaging of results for an instantaneous static electric field of strength |F(ωt)|.
Electric Field Autocorrelation Functions For Beginning Multiple Rayleigh Scattering, James A. Lock
Electric Field Autocorrelation Functions For Beginning Multiple Rayleigh Scattering, James A. Lock
Physics Faculty Publications
The polarization-resolved electric field autocorrelation function for p-order scattering was derived from the order-of-scattering solution of the exact equations for electromagnetic multiple Rayleigh scattering and was calculated for 2 less than or equal to p less than or equal to 6 for particles undergoing diffusive motion in an idealized sample cell. It was found that the polarization-channel and the scattering-angle dependence of the p-order autocorrelation function approximately decoupled from the delay-time dependence for p greater than or similar to 3. The polarization-channel and the scattering-angle dependence were analytically calculated, and the delay-time dependence was analytically approximated. The resulting analytical model …

Data Conditioning For Gravitational Wave Detectors: A Kalman Filter For Regressing Suspension Violin Modes, L. S. Finn, S. Mukherjee
Data Conditioning For Gravitational Wave Detectors: A Kalman Filter For Regressing Suspension Violin Modes, L. S. Finn, S. Mukherjee
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
Interferometric gravitational wave detectors operate by sensing the differential light travel time between free test masses. Correspondingly, they are sensitive to anything that changes the physical distance between the test masses, including physical motion of the masses themselves. In ground-based detectors the test masses are suspended as pendula, in order that they be approximately \"free\" above the pendulumn frequency. Still, thermal or other excitations of the suspension wires' violin modes do impart a force on the masses that appears as a strong, albeit narrow-band, \"signal\" in the detectors waveband. Gravitational waves, on the other hand, change the distance between the …

Design Of Circularly Polarized, Omnidirectional Microstrip Sounding Rocket Antennas For Telemetry And Gps Applications, Ty Sullins
Engineering
The orientation of a sounding rocket with respect to ground stations or GPS satellites is often highly variable and sometimes unpredictable due to its trajectory and spin. Therefore, a sounding rocket antenna should have a radiation pattern that is nearly omnidirectional to ensure sufficient signal strength in any direction, and the antennas should be circularly polarized to minimize polarization loss. Microstrip antennas are well suited to meet these requirements because they are low profile, lightweight, durable, and can be conformed to nonplanar geometries. Additionally, circularly polarization can be achieved using simple geometries and small size. This dissertation presents the theory …
The Interaction Of Io And The Jovian Magnetic Field: Io's Alfven Wings And Particle Acceleration, Vincent Dols
The Interaction Of Io And The Jovian Magnetic Field: Io's Alfven Wings And Particle Acceleration, Vincent Dols
Physics
Conditions for the formation of an electric field along the field lines of Jupiter crossing the satellite Io are investigated by examining the properties of Io's Alfven wave. A three-dimensional self-consistent MHD model, using a simplified magnetosphere description, illustrates the formation of this electric field and of Io's related auroral emission in the Jovian ionosphere. The Alfven wing properties between Io and Jupiter are studied with a one-dimensional MHD model and a realistic magnetosphere. Any change in the Io/Jupiter system affects the structure of the Alfven wing and likely affects the structure of Io's auroral emissions. This emission is likely …
Portrayal Vs. Reality: Images Of African Americans In Magazine Advertisements, Catherine Elizabeth Davis
Portrayal Vs. Reality: Images Of African Americans In Magazine Advertisements, Catherine Elizabeth Davis
Communication
The images of African Americans in magazine advertisements are changing. As these images change, researchers question whether or not African American socioeconomic and familial status are being accurately represented. George Gerbner's cultivation theory suggests that media play a role in shaping people's perceptions of minority groups. Using content analysis, this study compares the portrayal of African American socioeconomic and familial status in magazine advertisements with 1999 United States Census Bureau socioeconomic statistics of African Americans in the United States. This study found that a discrepancy exists between the portrayal and the reality of African American socioeconomic and familial status than …
Development Of A Fe Boltzmann Temperature Lidar, Justin Breese
Development Of A Fe Boltzmann Temperature Lidar, Justin Breese
Chemistry and Biochemistry
An iron Boltzmann temperature lidar allows the measurement of temperatures and iron densities in the mesopause region (8̃0-100 km). This thesis describes the initial development of a new Boltzmann temperature lidar at Poker Flat Research Range. An excimer-pumped dye laser system was installed in April 1999. During 1999 and 2000 this system was calibrated against the resident sodium system. Observations of iron were made in the winter of 2000 and spring 2001. Temperature measurements were made in December of 2000. The thesis presents an operational analysis of the lidar system performance and a scientific analysis of the data obtained. the …
Neuroprotection In The Hibernating Brain: Tissue Trauma And Glutamate Studied By Microdialysis, Fang Zhou
Neuroprotection In The Hibernating Brain: Tissue Trauma And Glutamate Studied By Microdialysis, Fang Zhou
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Hibernation, a natural model of tolerance to 'cerebral ischemia', represents a state of pronounced fluctuation in cerebral blood flow where no brain damage occurs. This study systematically investigates the brain tissue response of hibernating and euthermic arctic ground squirrels to CNS trauma, modeled by insertion of microdialysis probes. The effect of glutamate, an excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter, on the cellular response and the origin of the significant amount of gltuamate were determined by quantitative microdialysis study. The present results indicate in euthermic brain tissue a typical inflammatory tissue response evidenced by the presence of activated microglia and astrocytes and the …

Assessment Of Total Mercury And Methyl Mercury In Selected Subsistence Fish In Western Alaska, Xiaoming Zhang
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were examined in muscle and liver samples of salmon species (Chinook: Oncorhynchus tshawytscha; Chum: O. keta; Sockeye: O. nerka; Coho: O. kisutch) and freshwater fish species (Pike: Esox lucius; Grayling: Thymallus arcticus; Whitefish: Caregonus nelsoni) collected in 1999 and 2000 from the Western Alaska rivers (Yukon, Kuskokwim, Nushagak and Kvichak). The THg in salmon muscles has a mean value of 62 ng/g (ww). In Pike muscles, THg has a mean value of 879 ng/g. The mean concentrations of THg in Grayling and Whitefish muscle are 153 ng/g and 32 ng/g respectively. In salmon muscle …
Radiative Transfer Modeling In The Coupled Atmosphere-Ocean System And Its Application To The Remote Sensing Of Ocean Color Imagery, Banghua Yan
Physics
Ocean color is the radiance emanating from the ocean due to scattering by chlorophyll pigments and particles of organic and inorganic origin. Thus, it contains information about chlorophyll concentrations which can be used to estimate primary productivity. Observations of ocean color from space can be used to monitor the variability in marine primary productivity, thereby permitting a quantum leap in our understanding of oceanographic processes from regional to global scales. Satellite remote sensing of ocean color requires accurate removal of the contribution by atmospheric molecules and aerosols to the radiance measured at the top of the atmosphere (TOA). This removal …
