Second-Order Uncertainty As A Bridge Between Probabilistic And Fuzzy Approaches, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre Jul 2001

Second-Order Uncertainty As A Bridge Between Probabilistic And Fuzzy Approaches, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

On the example of physics, we show that the traditional one-level description is not completely adequate. For a more adequate structure, a hierarchical description of uncertainty is necessary, which supplements the more traditional first-order uncertainty with second-order, third-order and more sophisticated models. In particular, the second-order approach seems to provide a bridge between probabilistic and fuzzy approaches to uncertainty.

Dispute Resolution And International Law: The United Nations Dialogue Among Civilizations, Catherine Tinker Jul 2001

Dispute Resolution And International Law: The United Nations Dialogue Among Civilizations, Catherine Tinker

NYLS Journal of Human Rights

The United Nations Dialogue among Civilizations initiative for the Year 2001 may contribute another dispute resolution technique for the global community. Elements of negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and adjudication and legal principles relevant to dialogue are reviewed. Dialogue, understood as a daily aspect of human interaction on many levels and in many situations, may lead to relationship-building and long-term conflict avoidance. Dialogue leads to learning and understanding other perspectives and may result in wellaccepted resolution of misunderstandings and reduction of conflict. This article suggests that dialogue may be useful for lawyers, arbitrators, and judges as an alternative to other forms of …

Review Of Contemporary American Indian Writing: Unsettling Literature By Dee Horne, Susan Bernardin Jul 2001

Review Of Contemporary American Indian Writing: Unsettling Literature By Dee Horne, Susan Bernardin

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In Mixedblood Messages: Literature, Film, Family, Place (1998), Louis Owens critiques a formative study of post-colonial literature, The Empire Writes Back (1990), because it "ignores entirely the impressive body of literature written by American Indian authors." Such an "omission," he suggests, is symptomatic of American Indian literature's marginalization even within marginalized literary studies. Dee Horne's Contemporary American Indian Writing: Unsettling Literature seeks to remedy this omission by reading selected First Nations authors through the lens of post-colonial theory. Horne's overarching goal is to explore the ways in which American Indian writers, to borrow Audre Lorde's formulation, use the "master's" linguistic …

Review Of The Literary History Of Alberta: Volume Two By George Melnyk, Kristjana Gunnars Jul 2001

Review Of The Literary History Of Alberta: Volume Two By George Melnyk, Kristjana Gunnars

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In 1988 the Alberta 2005 Centennial History Society started to commission a series of specialized studies on Alberta, called Alberta Reflections, to be ready for the 2005 Provincial Centennial. George Melnyk's The Literary History of Alberta, a survey of the publishing history of Alberta up to the end of the twentieth century, is part of that series; the author is himself a member of Alberta's literary community. The second volume of his literary history covers the last fifty years of Alberta literature, and Melnyk takes care to point out the hazards of his position. Writing from inside the …

Mormonism's Encounter With The Michigan Relics, Mark Ashurst-Mcgee Jul 2001

Mormonism's Encounter With The Michigan Relics, Mark Ashurst-Mcgee

BYU Studies

One of the strangest and most extensive archaeological hoaxes in American history was perpetrated around the turn of the twentieth century in Michigan. Hundreds of objects known as the Michigan Relics were made to appear as the remains of a lost civilization. The artifacts were produced, buried, "discovered," and marketed by James O. Scotford and Daniel E. Soper. For three decades these artifacts were secretly planted in earthen mounds, publicly removed, and lauded as wonderful discoveries. Because the Michigan Relics allegedly evidence a Near Eastern presence in ancient America, they have drawn interest from The Church of Jesus Christ of …

Culture Carol: Dickens's Influence On Lds Christmas Fiction, Rosalynde Frandsen Welch Jul 2001

Culture Carol: Dickens's Influence On Lds Christmas Fiction, Rosalynde Frandsen Welch

BYU Studies

During the festive weeks before Christmas feasts, everybody loves to hate Scrooge. That's how it always was in the household of my childhood. On the first Sunday afternoon of December, my father would gather the children in the family room and ceremonially produce our green hardbound edition of A Christmas Carol. He worked his way through the five staves of the Carol during that afternoon and the Sunday afternoons that followed, in order to complete the reading before Christmas Day. Although the younger children would fidget and the older children would complain, we needed the annual retelling of the …

Recent Dissertations On Service And Service-Learning Topics: Volume Ii, Robert D. Shumer, Ann Treacy Jul 2001

Recent Dissertations On Service And Service-Learning Topics: Volume Ii, Robert D. Shumer, Ann Treacy

Bibliographies

This is the second edition of the Learn and Serve America National Service-Learning Clearinghouse review of dissertations on service, service-learning, and related topics. In the first edition we identified approximately 110 studies, limiting the search to studies conducted from 1990 to the present. In this volume we provide information and abstracts on more than 200 studies- and expand the time they were produced to periods prior to 1990. Some date as early as the 1970s.

The goals for doing this literature review are many. First, we want to continue to dispel the notion (as mentioned in the first version) that …

The Power Of Apology And The Process Of Historical Reconciliation, Robert R. Weyeneth Jul 2001

The Power Of Apology And The Process Of Historical Reconciliation, Robert R. Weyeneth

Faculty Publications

The article analyzes one of the ways that history makes the headlines today: in discussions of whether the present can--and should--apologize for the past. It examines this recent phenomenon by asking if historical apologies have the ability to facilitate a process of historical reconciliation. In its first three sections, the article explores the range and forms of apologies reported in the press during the last decade or so, the motives and goals of apologists, and the reasoning of those with misgivings about the utility and wisdom of apologies. A fourth section assesses the efficacy of historical apologies. Is an apology …

Toni Morrison, Oprah Winfrey, And Postmodern Popular Audiences, John K. Young Jul 2001

Toni Morrison, Oprah Winfrey, And Postmodern Popular Audiences, John K. Young

English Faculty Research

In this essay the author examines the "Oprah Effect" on the career of Toni Morrison, who after three appearances on "Oprah's Book Club" has become the most dramatic example of postmodernism's merger between Morrison's canonical status and Winfrey's commercial power has superseded the publishing industry's field of normative whiteness, enabling Morrison to reach a broad, popular audience while being marketed as artistically important.

The Poetics Of The Pragmatic: What Literary Criticisms Of Law Offers Posner, Guyora Binder Jul 2001

The Poetics Of The Pragmatic: What Literary Criticisms Of Law Offers Posner, Guyora Binder

Journal Articles

The process by which we represent our society's will and welfare in the medium of law is an imaginative and expressive one, narrating the path from a virtuous past to a decent future, informed by aesthetic judgment. In Literary Criticisms of Law, Guyora Binder and Robert Weisberg argued that, because law is literary in this sense, scholars can use the methods of literary criticism to "read" the law and to subject it to critical evaluation and reflective aesthetic judgment. In reviewing that book, Judge Richard Posner reasserted his long-held position that it is most useful to evaluate law economically rather …

Interlanguage Analysis As An Input To Grammar-Teaching, Tony T.N. Hung Jul 2001

Interlanguage Analysis As An Input To Grammar-Teaching, Tony T.N. Hung

PASAA

The last decade has seen a revival of interest in the teaching of grammar, though in a different form from 50 years ago. Regardless of the approach one adopts, it is important for teachers to try to gain a deeper insight into the 'interlanguage' grammars of their learners - i.e., the internalized linguistic systems, approximating the target language system but differing from it in various ways, which enable learners to generate the same kinds of sentences repeatedly, and which can account for the persistent errors that they make. The present paper argues for the importance of an analysis of the …

Learning English Though Songs, Subhasinee Rajhandaraks Jul 2001

Learning English Though Songs, Subhasinee Rajhandaraks

PASAA

Out of the four skills of English, it would seem rather convincing to state that listening is the one that foreign students practise least. The why and wherefore is that most EFL instructors tend to pay more attention to linguistic competence, an approach which is reflected in the use of grammar-based materials. In addition, being trapped in the traditional approach of teaching English, instructors are more likely to concentrate on reading and writing rather than speaking and listening. Lastly, when students leave the classroom, there are few opportunities to listen to English. However, there is a cunningly lighthearted solution. Here, …

Variability In Word Learning: Phonological Sensitivity And Phonological Memory, Marnie E. Arkenberg Jul 2001

Variability In Word Learning: Phonological Sensitivity And Phonological Memory, Marnie E. Arkenberg

Student Work

Presently, investigators believe that variability in children’s word learning results from individual differences in one of two separate processes thought to underlie word learning: phonological sensitivity or phonological memory. Traditionally, researchers have viewed differences in children’s vocabularies as being the result of differences in either phonological memory or phonological sensitivity. However, there is reason to believe that a different type of relation exists among phonological sensitivity, phonological memory, and vocabulaiy. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the nature of these relations in preschoolers. Three hypotheses were presented: either phonological memory or phonological sensitivity plays a larger role in …

“Students’ Right,” English Only, And Re-Imagining The Politics Of Language., Bruce Horner Jul 2001

“Students’ Right,” English Only, And Re-Imagining The Politics Of Language., Bruce Horner

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Argues that a lack of language legislation is indicative of a pervasive, tacit policy of "English Only" in composition and of a constellation of assumptions about languages, and language users that continues to cripple public debate on English Only and compositionists' approaches to matters of "error." Proposes an approach to language and "error" considering the relations of language to power.

Theories Of Uncertainty: Explaining The Possible Sources Of Error In Inferences, Vern R. Walker Jul 2001

Theories Of Uncertainty: Explaining The Possible Sources Of Error In Inferences, Vern R. Walker

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This Article develops the concept of a "theory of uncertainty" as a tool for warranting non-monotonic inferences. It proposes that theories of uncertainty have an explanatory function in inference that is roughly parallel to the role played by theories of causation in the empirical sciences. An adequate theory of uncertainty provides a framework for explaining the warrant for non-monotonic inferences by explaining the possible sources of error in such inferences. A theory of uncertainty should explain the extent to which the available evidence warrants a particular conclusion and the kinds and degrees. of uncertainty associated with that conclusion. Such a …
