Knowledge Management In The Healthcare Sector, Srinivas Krishna Dec 2001

Knowledge Management In The Healthcare Sector, Srinivas Krishna

IIMB Management Review

The healthcare sector across the globe is under going a cultural transformation, as the traditional passive and respectful patient opulation is replaced by an assertive and sceptical group of ‘customers’. As the educated and informed consumer moves through the healthcare system and begins to use more services, s/he is demanding information and choice, engaging in self-care and selfmanagement of diseases, and asserting a voice in making healthcare decisions with providers. The proliferation of clinical data, outcomes management, provider information and pricing transparency will allow consumers to be responsible for their own destinies in a historically anti-consumer healthcare system. In fact, …

Perspectives Of Teacher Leaders In An Educational Reform Environment: Finding Meaning In Their Involvement, Ginny Birky Dec 2001

Perspectives Of Teacher Leaders In An Educational Reform Environment: Finding Meaning In Their Involvement, Ginny Birky

Faculty Publications - College of Education

The purpose of this qualitative research study was to describe the experiences of secondary teachers who were actively involved in positions of teacher leadership in their schools and to discover the meaning that leadership activities had for them in their work. The informal teacher leaders performed their leadership functions in an environment of educational reform and change, voluntarily, and on their own time.

The study was framed and described by data gathered primarily through a series of in-depth interviewing, based on a structure for phenomenological interviewing by Seidman. The individual interviews were audio taped and transcribed in full text. Other …

Long-Term Outcome Of Gastrostomy Feeding In Dysphagic Stroke Patients, Tung-Chou Li, Mei-Hue Hsu, Tzong-Hsi Lee Dec 2001

Long-Term Outcome Of Gastrostomy Feeding In Dysphagic Stroke Patients, Tung-Chou Li, Mei-Hue Hsu, Tzong-Hsi Lee

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Dysphagia is a common reason for long-term enteral feeding in stroke patients. It has been shown that gastrostomy feeding provides better nutrition for stroke patients than nasogastric tube feeding in short term period. However, little is known about the long-term outcome of gastrostomy-assisted feeding in them. In recent years, some of the dysphagic stroke patients began to accept gastrostomy feeding in Taiwan. We herein conducted this study to find and analyze the characteristics and long-term outcome of dysphagic stroke patients who had underwent gastrostomy. Forty-two stroke patients underwent gastrostomy between Jan. 1998 and May 2000 were enrolled in this study. …

The Role Of Social Capital In Reclaiming Human Capital: A Longitudinal Study Of Occupational Mobility Among Displaced Steelworkers, Allison Zippay

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper examines the employment and income effects of job training, education, and social network contacts over a l0-year period among a random sample of steelworkers who lost jobs to plant closings in the early 1980s in a manufacturing community in Western Pennsylvania. First interviewed in 1987, a majority of the 102 respondents were unemployed or underemployed. A second round of interviews was conducted in 1997 with 87 of the original respondents to examine changes in income and employment status, the types of training and education that had been pursued over the course of 10 years, and their use of …

Adolescence And Old Age In Twelve Communities, Pranab Chatterjee, Darlyne Bailey, Nina Aronoff Dec 2001

Adolescence And Old Age In Twelve Communities, Pranab Chatterjee, Darlyne Bailey, Nina Aronoff

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper disputes the theory of universal stages of development (often called the epigenetic principle) asserted by Erikson (1963; 1982; 1997) and later developed in detail by Newman & Newman (1987, p. 33). It particularly disputes that there are clear stages of adolescence (12-18), late adolescence (18-22), old age (60-75), and very old age (75+). Data from twelve communities around the world suggest that the concept of adolescence is socially constructed in each local setting, and that the concept of late adolescence is totally absent in some communities. Further, the stage of old age (60-75) is much shorter in some …

Serving The Homeless: Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Homeless Shelter Services, George M. Glisson, Robert L. Fischer, Bruce A. Thyer

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The effects of homeless assistance services at the local level are tremendously difficult to ascertain. In this study, a four-month sample of homeless persons served by a local homeless shelter and case management program were contacted nine to eleven months after receiving services. The findings suggest that the program had some initial success in assisting the homeless clients to locate housing within the first year after leaving the shelter. However, the housing costs paid by these formerly homeless were quite high, with nearly three-quarters of them spending forty percent or more of their income on housing.

Religious Land Use And Institutionalized Persons Act Of 2000: The Land Use Provisions Are Both Unconstitutional And Unnecessary, Ada-Marie Walsh

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

The Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 was Congress 'response to the Supreme Court's striking down of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in City of Boerne v. Flores. In promulgating the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, Congress, inter alia, sought to protect the free exercise of religion from excessive governmental meddling while remedying discrimination suffered by religious individuals and groups in the area of land use. In dealing solely with land use provisions of the RLUIPA, the author argues that the Religious Land Use and lnstitutionalized Person Act is unconstitutional because it violates the Establishment …

Dextran-Methylprednisolone Succinate As A Prodrug Of Methylprednisolone: Plasma And Tissue Disposition, Xiaoping Zhang, Reza Mehvar Dec 2001

Dextran-Methylprednisolone Succinate As A Prodrug Of Methylprednisolone: Plasma And Tissue Disposition, Xiaoping Zhang, Reza Mehvar

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Plasma and tissue disposition of a macromolecular prodrug of methylprednisolone (MP), dextran (70 kDa)–methylprednisolone succinate (DMP), was studied in rats. Single 5‐mg/kg doses of DMP or unconjugated MP were administered into the tail veins of different groups of rats (n  = 4/group/time point). Blood (cardiac puncture) and tissues (liver, spleen, kidney, heart, lung, thymus, and brain) were collected at various times after DMP (0–96 h) or MP (0–2 h) injections. Concentrations of DMP and MP in samples were analyzed by size‐exclusion chromatography (SEC) and reversed‐phase high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively. Conjugation of MP with 70‐kDa dextran resulted in 22‐, …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Context: Hot packs, light exercise, and or moderate exercise are used to heat soft tissue injuries before rehabilitation or competition for their desired effects. This comparison is beneficial to clinicians, so that they may be better educated on the use of the most effective therapeutic modality heating protocols when treating a soft tissue injury. Objective: To compare the application of a hot pack to light intensity exercise and moderate intensity exercise on peak temperature of the rectus femoris muscle, and the time at which peak temperature is reached. Design: A 1 x 3 factorial design was used in this study. …
