IIMB Management Review

Globalisation has brought increasing pressure on governments worldwide to improve their quality of services. In India too there is an urgent need to improve the quality of governance. In this context, it is important for public sector organisations and the government to offer MBAs and other young professionals an exciting career. These people can play an important role as managers and leaders in shaping the destiny of India in the years to come.

Successful Branding By Pran K Choudhury, Universities Press, 2000., Vijay G Vancheswar

IIMB Management Review

Successful Branding is a good amalgam of real-life Indian case studies which highlight the role of branding in successful marketing. While most of the cases revolve around fast moving consumer brands, given the sensitivity of this category to market perceptions, houdhury does provide interesting cases of brand creation in low interest category commodity products such as cement(Ambuja Cement) and intermediate products such as denim (Arvind Mills).

Exotic And Invasive Woody Plant Species In Iowa, Donald R. Farrar Dec 2001

Exotic And Invasive Woody Plant Species In Iowa, Donald R. Farrar

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Seventy species and hybrids of exotic woody trees, shrubs, and vines have naturalized in Iowa. Nearly half of these species (31) have become invasive pests in parts of the state or have potential do so. Most of the seriously invasive species are spread by bird ingestion of whole fruits. Widespread dispersal by birds hinders eradication efforts and should be considered a trait indicative of potential invasiveness. The economic and ecological values of Iowa forests are seriously compromised by exotic invasive woody species, especially where forests recovering from cropland and pasture are dominated by exotic species. Thus, a simple measure of …

"What's Good Is Bad, What's Bad Is Good, You'll Find Out When You Reach The Top, You're On The Bottom": Are The Americans With Disabilities Act (And Olmstead V. L. C.) Anything More Than "Idiot Wind?", Michael L. Perlin

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Mental disability law is contaminated by "sanism, " an irrational prejudice similar to such other irrational prejudices as racism and sexism. The passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-a statute that focused specifically on questions of stereotyping and stigma-appeared at first to offer an opportunity to deal frontally with sanist attitudes and, optimally, to restructure the way that citizens with mental disabilities were dealt with by the remainder of society. However, in its first decade, the ADA did not prove to be a panacea for such persons. The Supreme Court's 1999 decision in Olmstead v. L.C. - ruling that …

War On Weeds: Winning It For Natural Areas, Jerry E. Asher Dec 2001

War On Weeds: Winning It For Natural Areas, Jerry E. Asher

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

I am delighted to be here with you today to discuss the rapidly accelerating damage that invasive exotic plants are inflicting on natural areas in this country. This problem may seem overwhelming, but you need not despair because there are economical, realistic, and effective strategies available to meet this challenge.

There are two purposes to this presentation: to give you information you can use to convince others that invasive exotic plants are seriously harmful, and to suggest that we can win this war on invasive exotic plants if we engage enough of the right people.

An Overview And Management Plan Of Iowa's Non-Native, Invasive, Terrestrial Forbs, Deborah Q. Lewis, Richard O. Pope Dec 2001

An Overview And Management Plan Of Iowa's Non-Native, Invasive, Terrestrial Forbs, Deborah Q. Lewis, Richard O. Pope

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Non-native, invasive forb species have been a problem in Iowa since the earliest decades of Iowa's European settlement. The history of studies of Iowa's invasive plants began with L. H. Pammel, and these studies continue to present. Three tables cite the occurrence of many of these species in the state, with Table 1 listing 93 non-native forbs reported by Pammel, Table 2 citing ten invasive forbs of natural areas, and Table 3 adding 38 observed or potential aggressive species of Iowa's anthropogenic and natural areas.

There has been a divergence of interest and research in the management of invasive species …

Forest Invasives In Iowa: Current Problems And Future Issues, John Walkowiak, John Haanstad Dec 2001

Forest Invasives In Iowa: Current Problems And Future Issues, John Walkowiak, John Haanstad

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Iowa's forest resources of primarily deciduous trees covers over 0.8 million hectares (2 million acres) of upland and floodplain sites too steep or too wet for traditional row crop agriculture. These limited natural forests along with urban trees and shelterbelts plantings of trees are critical for environmental and economic enhancement in the state. Although not yet established in the state, exotic insects, such as gypsy moth, Asian longhorned beetle, and pine shoot beetle, threaten native tree vitality. Established exotic diseases such as oak wilt and Dutch elm disease continue to plague the survival of Iowa's oak and elm resources, respectively. …

The Research Of Medical Service Quality Evaluation: From The Viewpoint Of Predicting Reclaimed Rate Using Neural Networks, Horng-Jeng Shyu, Chao-Chang Chiu, Pei-Lun Hsu, Meei-Fang Lin

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The goal of this study was to investigate the subtle interrelationships between the insurance claim’s data and clinic performance of medical institutes. Because the medical claims data increase drastically, the review efforts and processes become rather complex and inefficient. The physicians of review committee should have an enterprise view of the claims. We create the performance indicators from consistent data & meta data established from the clinic performance of medical institutes. We adopted 16 outpatient review indicators. We collected rehabilitation claims in middle branch of NHIB since July 1996 till Feb 1997. The prediction model created using both the neural network …

Clinical Experience In Asian Type Multiple Sclerosis, Der-Sheng Han, Jau-Jia Lin, Yen-Ho Wang, Chih-Chao Yang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Multiple sclerosis is a heterogeneous disease entity, and also the most common disabling neurological disorder of people in middle life in USA. The prevalence of multiple sclerosis in Asia is lower than that in Western countries of similar latitude. Besides, there are some different features, clinically as well as pathologically, between this disease in Asia and in Western countries. We collected 27 cases diagnosed as clinically definite MS at NTUH between 1990-2000, whose clinical presentations are restricted to optic nerves and spinal cord. Their clinical charts were reviewed retrospectively, and the data was collected in a standard coding sheet. The …

Metastatic Prostate Cancer Associated With Lumbar Compression Fracture And Spinal Stenosis: A Casereport And Literature Review, Shwu-Fen Sun, Jue-Long Wang, Ping-Hong Lai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

We reported a 72 y/o male who had past history of old L1 compression fracture for 1 year. He suffered from falling down accidentally and was operated under impression of L1 burst fracture with cauda equina syndrome. He could ambulate with walker, but persistent back pain was still complained. Two months after operation, he became paralyzed rapidly in 2 days. Neurological examinations showed decreased motor strength of bilateral lower extremities to grade 0-1/5, sensory deficit below T10 dermatome and bilateral extensor plantar response. X-ray film showed an osteoblastic lesion in T9 vertebra body. Magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI) of thoracic spine …

Lumbar Disc Herniation Along With Ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: A Casereport And Literature Review, Woan-Chwen Wu, Chen-Liang Chou, Ming-Chi Yung, Shing-Su Chen, Tcho-Jen Liu, Rai-Chi Chan

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Abdominal aortic aneurysm is a condition affecting nearly 4% of the elderly population. It has a potential for producing a wide range of symptoms, including abdominal pain and back pain. It is rare that abdominal aortic aneurysm presents with paraplegia. From literature review there have been very few reports of patients who sustained lumbar disc herniation along with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. We reported a 68-year-old man with a previously undiagnosed abdominal aortic aneurysm presenting with acute paraplegia. This patient had a history of lumbar disc herniation and was receiving pelvic traction. He survived after operation, but some long-term sequelae, …

Etiology And Rehabilitation Effect Of Stroke In Child: A Casereport, Li-Chen Tung, Kwok-Tak Yeung, Chun-Hou Wang, Wen-I Liang, Liu-Ing Bih

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The incidence of strokes in childhood is 2.5/100,000. Of these, occlusive stroke accounts for 57 to 85 percent, and hemorrhagic stroke accounts for 15 to 51 percent. Occlusive stroke is primarily caused by congenital heart defects, and the principal symptom is acute hemiplegia. Hemorrhagic stroke is caused mostly by abnormalities of blood vessels, and is characterized by headache and loss of consciousness. Compared to adults, children have better collateral circulation and incompletely developed brains. The clinical and recovery courses those in children are different from those of adults. The prognosis and the incidence of stroke recurrence are largely determined by …

A Harm Reduction Intervention For Drinking Games, Nicholas A. Lind Dec 2001

A Harm Reduction Intervention For Drinking Games, Nicholas A. Lind

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Binge drinking is not only responsible for the leading cause of death of 18-21 year olds (alcohol-related accidents), but is also associated with alcohol dependence, sexual assault, and school failure. Little research has addressed one of the major contexts in which college binge drinking occurs, namely participation in drinking games. The current study used a quasiexperimental pre-post design to examine the effectiveness of a drinking game intervention based on Marlatt's (1996) Harm Reduction model of prevention. Six male residence hall floors and seven fraternities were randomly identified as experimental groups and three floors and three fraternities were designated as controls. …

Fusobacteriosis In Captive Wild-Caught Pronghorns (Antilocapra Americana), J. F. Edwards, D. S. Davis, T. J. Roffe, F. Ramiro-Ibañez, P. H. Elzer

Faculty Publications

An outbreak of Fusobacterium necrophorum-induced septicemia occurred in a group of 40 captive wild-caught pronghorns (Antilocapra americana). Primary pododermatitis or necrotic stomatitis progressed to produce fatal septicemia with metastatic lesions in the forestomachs, lung, liver, and cecum in 38 of the animals. Two remaining animals were euthanatized because of chronic pododermatitis. Housing the animals in a pasture previously used by bovids and heavy rains with persistence of ground water pools in the pasture were contributing factors in the pathogenesis of this outbreak.

Understanding The Relationship Between Religiosity And Marriage: An Investigation Of The Immediate And Longitudinal Effect Of Religiosity On Newlywed Couples, Kieran T. Sullivan Dec 2001

Understanding The Relationship Between Religiosity And Marriage: An Investigation Of The Immediate And Longitudinal Effect Of Religiosity On Newlywed Couples, Kieran T. Sullivan

Psychology

The association between religiosity and marital outcome has been repeatedly demonstrated. However, a complete understanding of this relationship is hindered by theoretical and methodological limitations. The purpose of the current study was to test three explanatory models by assessing two samples of newlywed couples. Findings indicate that religiosity is associated with attitudes toward divorce, commitment, and help-seeking attitudes cross-sectionally. Longitudinal effects, however, are most consistent with a moderating model, wherein religiosity has a positive impact on husbands, and wives' marital satisfaction for couples with less neurotic husbands, and a negative impact for couples with more neurotic husbands. Overall, the impact …
