Spatial Models Of Forest-Environment Relationships On The Appalachian Plateaus: The Allegheny Mountain Section, Western Maryland., Joshua Andrew Kincaid Jan 2001

Spatial Models Of Forest-Environment Relationships On The Appalachian Plateaus: The Allegheny Mountain Section, Western Maryland., Joshua Andrew Kincaid

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The goal of this thesis research was to show that spatial data do affect the results of the analysis of vegetation-environment relationships. Vegetation-environment relationships were modeled within the Allegheny Mountain section of the Appalachian Plateaus physiographic province in western Maryland. Specifically, this research focused on two state forests, namely Garrett and Potomac State Forests, in Garrett County, Maryland. Four regression models were utilized in this research to model the basal area and diversity of the fifteen most prominent species relative to environmental factors within the two forests combined. A standard Ordinary Least Squares regression model with diagnostics for spatial effects …

Exploring The Linkage Of Environmental Impact Assessment (Eia) And Geographic Information Systems (Gis): A Case Study Of The West Run Expressway (Wre), Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia., Sewelo S. Keleagetse

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a process that seeks to identify potential environmental impacts resulting from development projects and to use this information to minimize those impacts on the social and ecological systems. EIA has been in existence for over three decades and has evolved from a single legislative mandate to a broad methodology. Since the introduction of EIA in the National Environmental Policy Act legislation in 1969, many techniques have been developed to help identify and assess the environmental impacts arising from human activity. Due to the complex nature of both social and natural systems, questions have been raised …

An Econometric Look At Inefficiency Among Us States, 1977-1986, Gregory J. Brock Jan 2001

An Econometric Look At Inefficiency Among Us States, 1977-1986, Gregory J. Brock

Economics: Faculty Publications

U.S. states during the 1977-1986 business cycle are found to have small but significant technical inefficiency in the private sector. Inefficiency is influenced by several factors, including prior economic performance, location, Hicks labor augmenting technical progress in the manufacturing sector in an earlier 1970s period, college graduation, and income inequality. The existence of a monetary channel, urban agglomeration, and a high school diploma "sheepskin" effect for improved technical efficiency are rejected. Results from earlier studies using noneconometric methods to measure technical efficiency are independently confirmed, indicating that interstate technical inefficiency exists and can be measured using both parametric and nonparametric …

"There's No Crying In Baseball": Sports And The Legal And Social Construction Of Gender, Rhonda Reaves Jan 2001

"There's No Crying In Baseball": Sports And The Legal And Social Construction Of Gender, Rhonda Reaves

Journal Publications

This Article analyzes the view that to be taken seriously as an athlete, women must replicate the behaviors prevalent in male-dominated sports. The Article focuses on sports in the educational context as an important opportunity for legal intervention. Because the law involves the allocation of resources and the policing of behavior by the government, this discussion prompts us to ask how resources should be allocated and what kinds of behavior should be encouraged and discouraged in promoting gender equity. In particular, the analysis of sports within educational programs offers an opportunity for a critical examination of current models of athletic …

A Chorological Study On The Taxa Naturalized In The Eastern Black Sea Region, Sali̇h Terzi̇oğlu, Rahi̇m Anşi̇n

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Diaspores of taxa with large ecological tolerance can be easily carried between continents and some of these taxa become an important factor, threatening the maintenance of plant species diversity, in addition to other factors, such as clear-cutting, over-grazing and dwellings. Chorological study is an important step for conserving plant species diversity, and it provides information about naturalized plant taxa that have migrated from one continent to others. Presenting the floristic relationships between the continents is important for plant geography and paleobotany. The chorological features of 32 taxa of flowering plants belonging to 14 families, naturalized in the Eastern Black Sea …

Student-On-Student Harassment: A New Paradigm For Canadian Human Rights Legislation, William Georgas Jan 2001

Student-On-Student Harassment: A New Paradigm For Canadian Human Rights Legislation, William Georgas

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Canadian school boards have recently begun to find themselves in the position of respondent under human rights complaints filed for cases of student-on-student harassment. This has raised serious questions regarding the extent of school board liability for the acts of students. It is possible for the current human rights legislation in Nova Scotia, used as a model in this discussion, to have jurisdiction over peer harassment; however, the procedural and substantive obstacles that need to be overcome make it a far from satisfactory avenue for a victim to pursue. The recent United States Supreme Court case of Davis v. Monroe …

Through The Looking Glass Of Teaching: The Death Penalty And The Political Culture Of Detached Passions, Adelaide H. Villmoare Jan 2001

Through The Looking Glass Of Teaching: The Death Penalty And The Political Culture Of Detached Passions, Adelaide H. Villmoare

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

Today, despite daily struggles in courtrooms against capital punishment, there appears little legal room to challenge the death penalty. Most constitutional questions appear "settled. Given the present composition of the Supreme Court, there is scant expectation of any major reversals. Also, the Court's future is to be decided by a President who was governor of a state that has executed more people since 1976 than any other state in the nation. While abolitionist scholars and activists continue to raise constitutional issues, the most dramatic events challenging the death penalty have occurred in the larger political arena outside the courtroom. The …

Migration And Radicalization: Global Futures, Gabriel Rubin Jan 2001

Migration And Radicalization: Global Futures, Gabriel Rubin

Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This book explores the connections between migration and terrorism and extrapolates, with the help of current research and case studies, what the future may hold for both issues. Migration and Radicalization: Global Futures looks at how migrants and terrorists have both been treated as Others outside the body politic, how growing migrant flows borne of a rickety state system cause both natives and migrants to turn violent, and how terrorist radicalization and tensions between natives and migrants can be reduced. As he contemplates potential global futures in the light of migration and radicalization, Gabriel Rubin charts a course between contemporary …

Civil Rights In The New Decade: The Geography Of Opportunity, Sheryll Cashin Jan 2001

Civil Rights In The New Decade: The Geography Of Opportunity, Sheryll Cashin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

It is truly an honor and a privilege to have been invited to return to my home state of Alabama to talk about the civil rights agenda in the new decade. Lest you think that I lack the appropriate credentials to speak on this issue, I will tell you that I did go to jail for the cause. At the age of four months, I was taken by my mother, Joan Carpenter Cashin, to a sit-in at a lunch counter in Huntsville, Alabama. When my mother was arrested, she insisted on taking me with her to jail. I am very …

Promise Unfulfilled: Law, Culture, And Women's Inheritance Rights In Ghana, Jeanmarie Fenrich, Tracy E. Higgins

Fordham International Law Journal

This Report presents the findings of a Fordham delegation. It consists of three parts. Part I sets out Ghana's obligations under international law as they relate to issues of women's equality generally and inheritance rights specifically. Part II describes the sources of Ghanaian law relevant to the issue. Part II begins with a very general description of the Ghanaian family. It then proceeds to analyze in some detail customary law governing marriage and property, including the customary law of intestate succession, which governed estates prior to 1985. Part II then describes both constitutional and statutory law relevant to intestate succession, …
