Chapter 03: Ecology And Natural Resources Of San Jose Llanga, João S. De Queiroz, David Layne Coppock, Humberto Alzérreca-Angelo, Brien E. Norton

Sustaining Agropastoralism on the Bolivian Altiplano: The Case of San José Llanga

Development and change in traditional societies is strongly affected by interactions between humans and their natural environments. Management practices used by most low-input, rural societies represent an amalgamation of technologies, social rules and organisational structures that have been tested over time and found suitable for sustainable exploitation of resources. In many cases, however, changes in population, social values, market opportunities, government policies or technology alter a delicate balance between humans and sustainable resource use. Given these critical relationships, a thorough knowledge of the biophysical environment is essential to comprehend and attempt to improve low-input production systems such as SJL.

Is There A Place In The World For Zoos? / Another View Of Zoos, David Hancocks, Richard Farinato

State of the Animals 2001

We human animals make rapid technological and cultural advancements because we have the ability to pass definitive information to succeeding generations. But we also accept too much from the past without challenge. The good, the bad, and the indifferent are muddled together, accumulating in layers that smother each succeeding age. Cultural mores ranging from the silly to the profane, from charming to dangerous, clutter our world. They exist only because, as the British are wont to say, “We have always done things this way.” One very troubling example is the public zoological parks found in almost every city: they are …

Urban Wildlife, John Hadidian, Sydney Smith Jan 2001

Urban Wildlife, John Hadidian, Sydney Smith

State of the Animals 2001

Despite the potential for difficulty, there are several reasons why urban wildlife should be valued and better understood. First is its scientific and heuristic value. Urban wildlife populations are essentially parts of ongoing natural experiments in adaptation to anthropogenic stress. How urban animals are affected by human activities— and how they cope with them— can represent, on a highly accelerated scale, a model of what is happening to species in other biomes. No other wild animals live in such intimate contact and under such constant constraint from human activities as do synanthropes. Second, urban animals are exposed to many environmental …

The Prehistory Of Big Creek, Terry L. Jones Jan 2001

The Prehistory Of Big Creek, Terry L. Jones

Social Sciences

Archaeological research began at Big Creek in 1983 with the first of four summer field classes offered by UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis. For the most part, this was the first systematic research to be undertaken in the South Coast Range or on the Sur coast, and certainly the first of any consequence in the Big Creek drainage. Before 1983, archaeologists had tended to overlook Big Sur (however, see Baldwin 1971) because it seemed unlikely that it had been a major demographic or cultural center for prehistoric peoples. While it remains true that populations in Big Sur were probably …

No. 21: Cross-Border Raiding And Community Conflict In The Lesotho-South African Border Zone, Gary Kynoch, Theresa Ulicki, Tsepang Cekwane, Booi Mohapi, Mampolokeng Mohapi, Ntsoaki Phakisi, Palesa Seithleko Jan 2001

No. 21: Cross-Border Raiding And Community Conflict In The Lesotho-South African Border Zone, Gary Kynoch, Theresa Ulicki, Tsepang Cekwane, Booi Mohapi, Mampolokeng Mohapi, Ntsoaki Phakisi, Palesa Seithleko

Southern African Migration Programme

Movement backwards and forwards across borders for work is often considered to be the primary form of unauthorized movement in Southern Africa. In southern Lesotho, a new and particularly dangerous form of two-way cross-border movement has become entrenched. This situation warrants the label “crisis”; a crisis which is devastating parts of the countryside in both Lesotho and the northern Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.

Media and official attention has focused on the extreme violence which accompanies cross-border stock raiding. This paper seeks to understand the social and economic roots and impacts of cross-border stock theft. Such an analysis is …

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

The clinical course and laboratory valuation of 21 patients coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Ehrlichia chaffeensis or Ehrlichia ewingii are reviewed and summarized, including 13 cases of ehrlichiosis caused by E. chaffeensis, 4 caused by E. ewingii, and 4 caused by either E. chaffeensis or E. ewingii. Twenty patients were male, and the median CD4+ T lymphocyte count was 137 cells/μL. Exposures to infecting ticks were linked to recreational pursuits, occupations, and peridomestic activities. For 8 patients, a diagnosis of ehrlichiosis was not considered until ≥4 days after presentation. Severe manifestations occurred more frequently …

Beyond Skills To Meaning: Artists As Healers And Implications For Art Educators, Lucinda Lee Blackstone Jan 2001

Beyond Skills To Meaning: Artists As Healers And Implications For Art Educators, Lucinda Lee Blackstone

Theses Digitization Project

Art definitions and movements are changing just as the social paradigms they spring from. This exploration looked at paradigms in art of the past that have become the foundation for movements today. Currently the transformative powers art has to offer have been recognized. Colleges are beginning to train a major and a career. The literature review explored what role transformative art has played in artists' lives and looked at its uses in education. Conceptual art goes beyond the aesthetics of art and touches the mind and heart. I began to explore this kind of art in the nearby galleries. I …

Creating A Student Accessible Online Syllabus, Kenneth Louis Decroo Jan 2001

Creating A Student Accessible Online Syllabus, Kenneth Louis Decroo

Theses Digitization Project

This project addresses how to create an online syllabus that is accessible to students and parents, that empowers students to take responsibility for their own learning while enhancing school/home communication, and serves as a graphic representation of what students have accomplished. Web quests are used as the principle means of instructional delivery to engage middle school students in problem-based projects that address real life situations using rigorous and relevant curricula. Elements of an online syllabus and the content of the course it supports are examined. The role, an online syllabus plays in fulfilling the goals of techno-constructivism, the move from …

Music Handbook For Primary Grade Teachers, Risa Maree Fiorillo Jan 2001

Music Handbook For Primary Grade Teachers, Risa Maree Fiorillo

Theses Digitization Project

Academic research in the area of music and learning has proven that there is both a deficiency and need for classroom music education commencing at the primary grade levels. The research has shown that by incorporating music education into the academic curriculum the arts can be more effectively taught and other academic subject areas can gain from the diverse teaching strategies the arts bring to education. There are two goals of this project. One is to demonstrate to teachers what primary grade level students should be learning in music. A second goal of this project is to design a music …

The Supremacy Clause Requires State Law To Yield To Federal Law When The State Law Conflicts With The Federal Law, Intrudes In A Field Traditionally Regulated By The Federal Government, Or Stands As An Obstacle To Achievement Of Federal Goals: United States V. Locke, Elizabeth A. Rosso Jan 2001

Rosso

Duquesne Law Review

The Supreme Court of the United States held that a state may not enact its own laws regulating oil tankers when a comprehensive federal regulatory scheme exists, because enforcement of the state statutes would obstruct achievement of the federal goal of a uniform system of regulation.

United States v. Locke, 120 S. Ct. 1135 (2000).

Biblical Assyria And Other Anxieties In The British Empire, Steven W. Holloway Jan 2001

Biblical Assyria And Other Anxieties In The British Empire, Steven W. Holloway

Libraries

The successful “invasion” of ancient Mesopotamia by explorers in the pay of the British Museum Trustees resulted in best-selling publications, a treasure-trove of Assyrian antiquities for display purposes and scholarly excavation, and a remarkable boost to the quest for confirmation of the literal truth of the Bible. The public registered its delight with the findings through the turnstyle- twirling appeal of the British Museum exhibits, and a series of appropriations of Assyrian art motifs and narratives in popular culture - jewelry, bookends, clocks, fine arts, theater productions, and a walk-through Assyrian palace among other period mansions at the Sydenham Crystal …

Identity Formation Of Asian American Teenagers And The Role Of The School Counselor, Susan K. Baker Jan 2001

Identity Formation Of Asian American Teenagers And The Role Of The School Counselor, Susan K. Baker

Graduate Research Papers

Teachers and counselors who work with young people know that adolescence is a time of physical, mental, emotional, and social change. Adolescence is a time when teenagers are trying to form an identity for themselves and as they go through this process, many factors will help form who they are and who they become. Most teenagers are able to navigate these years with little conflict, on the other hand, some struggle with different issues. Adolescents have to deal with issues related to sexuality, peer pressure, and development to name a few. However, adolescents belonging to ethnic/racial underrepresented groups have to …

Opposing Systems, Erin Stone Jan 2001

Opposing Systems, Erin Stone

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Costa Rica and Nicaragua, although situated close together in geography, historically and politically are worlds apart. Costa Rica has maintained a stable democracy since 1948, while Nicaragua, rocked by authoritarian rule and then revolution in 1979, is still in an unstable growth period. Each country represents an opposing government system that would have varying effects on the emphasis and influence placed on different social situations in each country. Through studying one social aspect, the women's movement, one is able to examine the positive and negative aspects of each system and prospects for future success of countries under each type of …

Colorblind Redistricting: Racial Proxies As A Solution To The Court's Voting Rights Act Quandry, Michelle E. O'Connor-Ratcliff Jan 2001

Colorblind Redistricting: Racial Proxies As A Solution To The Court's Voting Rights Act Quandry, Michelle E. O'Connor-Ratcliff

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

This Note explores the crossroads of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, redistricting, strict scrutiny, the colorblind ideal, and racial proxies. Although better than total rejection of race as a consideration in redistricting, racial proxies are not good enough. The unattained colorblind ideal should not be treated as if it were reality. We are not yet a colorblind society and are likely a long way from it. Race awareness does have a part to play in building America into the Court's dream utopia that eventually becomes colorblind. Racial proxies only prompt states to pretend that race is not a factor …

Internet Web Site Jurisdiction, 20 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 21 (2001), Richard A. Bales, Suzanne Van Wert

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

The Internet is here to stay. Consequently, disputes in this cyberspace are heard in courts nationwide, and one of the most fundamental litigation questions is the personal jurisdiction. In this article, the authors discuss the difficulties courts have in defining the degree of interaction between the Web site operator and online users. The authors first discuss the background of how courts tackle the personal jurisdiction issue. Then, as the society leaps into the cyberspace, authors analyze how this great development in technology and communications creates challenges to courts in grounding personal jurisdictional issues. By going through case analyses, authors show …
