New Formalist Poets Of The American West, April Linder Jan 2001

New Formalist Poets Of The American West, April Linder

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

In the late 1970s and early eighties, when most American poets were writing autobiographical free-verse lyrics, a handful of mavericks flouted literary fashion. They used rhyme, meter, and regular form—both traditional and innovative—and tried narrative, satire, and light verse. In an essay entitled “Can Poetry Matter?” (1991) one of these poets, Dana Gioia, accused contemporary poets of writing mostly for each other. “The poetry boom has been a distressingly confined phenomenon,” he wrote. “Decades of public and private funding have created a large professional class for the production of teachers, graduate students, editors, publishers, and administrators. Based mostly in universities, …

Self-Prescribing Medication: Regulating Prescription Drug Sales On The Internet, 20 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 57 (2001), Kristin Yoo

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

"Online pharmacies, your friendly neighborhood drugstores." The Internet is not only a great telecommunication medium but also a low-cost and convenient commercial marketplace. It is no exception that online pharmacies flourished as a result, but the consequences of such development pose grave danger to the public and great challenges to regulations. The author discusses the benefits and risk of online pharmacies, the different types of online pharmacies, state governments' involvement in regulating online prescriptions and federal involvements. Despite both state and federal legislations and regulations, proliferation of online pharmacies, established inside and outside of the US, proves to be a …

Looking Back, Looking Ahead, Alisa Solomon Jan 2001

Looking Back, Looking Ahead, Alisa Solomon

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

Vivien Ng said something at a roundtable discussion CLAGS hosted in October that has been ringing in my ears ever since. The roundtable had brought together a range of Women's Studies and LGTBQ Studies scholars, writers and teachers, to consider what lessons LGTBQ Studies might draw from its older sister as the younger field becomes further institutionalized at universities and colleges across the country. Was feminism still a motive force? we wondered. Did that field somehow speak to and from a vibrant movement, or at least to and from women's communities? Was it still accountable to them in some way? …

The Shadow Criminal Law Of Municipal Governance, Wayne A. Logan Jan 2001

The Shadow Criminal Law Of Municipal Governance, Wayne A. Logan

Scholarly Publications

Although it often escapes attention, municipal governments possess significant authority to enact criminal laws consistent with their expansive home rule and police powers. In this article, Professor Logan explores the numerous ways in which this authority manifests, and reflects upon, several of the main concerns presented by the "shadow criminal law" thereby created. These concerns include the negative practical consequences for individuals and entire communities associated with the proliferation of criminal laws, in which municipalities play a significant part; the specter that such governments will indulge punitive or parochial tendencies; and the pitfalls associated with intra-state diversification of the criminal …

Canadian Audit Market In The First Half Of The Twentieth Century, Alan John Richardson Jan 2001

Canadian Audit Market In The First Half Of The Twentieth Century, Alan John Richardson

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper explores the structure of the Canadian audit market between 1901 and 1941 based on a sample of 3661 financial statements from 956 firms. Two aspects of the market are examined: first, the overall degree of market concentration, and second, the existence of market segmentation. In addition, a specific concern of the paper is to analyse competition between domestic accounting firms and the international accounting firms leading to the merger of major independent Canadian firms with international accounting firm networks after World War Two. The data show a pattern of increasing concentration during the period among a small set …

Archival Investigation Of A Late 19th Century Accounting Information System: The Use Of Decision Aids In The American Printing Industry, Roger B. Daniels, Jesse Beeler Jan 2001

Archival Investigation Of A Late 19th Century Accounting Information System: The Use Of Decision Aids In The American Printing Industry, Roger B. Daniels, Jesse Beeler

Accounting Historians Journal

This study investigates management's use of decision aids within the context of an accounting information system of a late 19th century American printing firm. Our findings suggest that the use of decision aids by management transformed traditional accounting techniques and the cost accounting system into an intricate accounting information system by 1880. These decision aids allowed managers to manipulate accounting information to support decisions involving pricing, cost allocation and estimation, profitability assessment, management of receivables, and inventory control. The findings shed new light on the early work of Alexander Hamilton Church on the issue of idle time accounting and raises …

Remote Estimation Of Vegetation Fraction In Corn Canopies, D. Rundquist, Anatoly A. Gitelson, D. Derry, J. Ramirez, R. Stark, Galina P. Keydan Jan 2001

Remote Estimation Of Vegetation Fraction In Corn Canopies, D. Rundquist, Anatoly A. Gitelson, D. Derry, J. Ramirez, R. Stark, Galina P. Keydan

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The aim of the paper was to test two new techniques that make use of channels in the visible range of the spectrum only to estimate vegetation fraction in corn canopies. High spectral resolution radiometers were employed to measure spectral reflectance, and the information content of spectra was investigated. Radiances in spectral channels of MODIS and MERIS were used to calculate Visible Atmospherically Resistant Indices, VARIgreen=(Rgreen- Rred)/(Rgreen+Rred-Rblue) and VARI700=(R700-1.7*Rred+0.7*Rblue)/(R700+2.3*Rred-1.3*Rblue). The indices allowed for estimation …

Internet Prescribing Limitations And Alternatives, Kara M. Friedman Jan 2001

Internet Prescribing Limitations And Alternatives, Kara M. Friedman

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

Ms. Friedman discusses the legal limitations placed on the consumer's ability to obtain drug prescriptions via the Internet. The article focuses on current legislative policies and regulations used to restrict access to prescription drugs over the Internet in the absence of a well-founded physician/patient relationship. The article argues that regulators might be able to satisfy the policy objective of ensuring that a learned intermediary is involved in prescription drug therapy by expanding the prescriptive authority of licensed pharmacists.

Collection Development In The New Millennium–Evaluating, Selecting, Annotating, Organizing For Ease Of Access, Reevaluating, And Updating Electronic Resources, Virginia A. Baldwin Jan 2001

Collection Development In The New Millennium–Evaluating, Selecting, Annotating, Organizing For Ease Of Access, Reevaluating, And Updating Electronic Resources, Virginia A. Baldwin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The literature of the early 1990s suggested changes in the structure of collection management itself in order to accommodate the changes both now occurring and those foreseen. Sheila Creth wrote in 1991 "Until recently, the primary focus of collection development has been on building collections." She outlined the functions of collection management in academic libraries to include: selection of materials, weeding, preservation, liaison with faculty and academic departments, reference and user education, fiscal responsibility, and policy development. Creth saw the necessity for a basic change in the library’s organization structure. "According to the principles of organizational design, the traditional structure …

No. 04: Gender Concerns In South African Migration Policy, Jonathan Crush, Vincent Williams Jan 2001

No. 04: Gender Concerns In South African Migration Policy, Jonathan Crush, Vincent Williams

Southern African Migration Programme

This paper draws attention to the need for a gender analysis of the South African government’s proposed new policy on international migration, by identifying a number of areas of implicit gender discrimination. Such “discrimination by default” is of more than academic relevance, having important implications for national and regional development. Research undertaken by the Southern African Migration Project indicates a growing “feminization” of migration to South Africa from the Southern African region, as well as gender-specific motives and patterns of migration. If migration is to be effectively managed, such realities must be taken into account. The paper concludes by advocating …
