Effect Of Altitude On Cyanide Concentration, Leaf Toughness, And Herbivory In Passiflora Biflora (Passifloraceae), November 2001, Matthew S. Martin Nov 2001

Effect Of Altitude On Cyanide Concentration, Leaf Toughness, And Herbivory In Passiflora Biflora (Passifloraceae), November 2001, Matthew S. Martin

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Insect herbivore diversity and abundance often decreases with increasing elevation due to greater extremes in temperature and climate (Janzen 1983; Hanson 2000). As a result, herbivore pressure on plants found at high altitude is lower. Thus, one might expect a reduction in the levels of antiherbivore defenses such as secondary metabolites or high fiber at higher altitudes. To test this, leaves from the tropical vine Passiflora biflora (Passifloraceae) were sampled in the Monteverde area of Costa Rica, from 800-1600m. Leaves were tested for cyanide levels, toughness, and percent herbivory. Cyanide in the leaves of P. biflora was found to increase …

Distribution And Host Species Ranges Of Umbonia Ataliba And Umbonia Crassicornis And The Potential For Interspecific Competition, November 2001, Charles A. Hernick

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Umbonia crassicornis and Umbonia ataliba (Homoptera: Membracidae) elevational ranges and host tree ranges were studied in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Umbonia crassicornis was known to exist at elevations below 1000 m, while U. ataliba was known to exist at 1300 -1500 m. The possibility of interspecific competition or possible future competition was investigated in light of recent local and global warming trends and observed population shifts in birds and herps by Pounds et al. (1999). A census of Umbonia species and host plants was conducted along an elevational gradient, in addition to an experimental test, which examined U. crassicornis survivorship on …

Effects Of Endophyte Infection In Tall Fescue (Festuca Arundinacea: Poaceae) On Community Diversity, Greg Spyreas, David J. Gibson, Beth A. Middleton Nov 2001

Effects Of Endophyte Infection In Tall Fescue (Festuca Arundinacea: Poaceae) On Community Diversity, Greg Spyreas, David J. Gibson, Beth A. Middleton

Publications

Recent studies have suggested that the presence of endophytes in tall fescue can lead to decreased species richness in the associated plant community. To assess the generality of this hypothesis, a field study tested the effects of endophyte infection on a 3-yr-old successional field dominated by Festuca arundinacea. The potential importance of endophyte infection relative to other environmental factors was tested by including two additional treatments: the effects of soil fertility and mowing. Contrary to previous studies, a positive relationship was found between endophyte infection frequency and diversity (N = 23, F = 5.23, R2 = 0.19, P < 0.03). A strong interaction was found between the mowing treatment and endophyte infection frequency in predicting diversity (N = 22, F = 36.1, R2 …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Type 2 iodothyronine deiodinase (D2) is a selenoenzyme, the product of the recently cloned cAMP-dependent Dio2 gene, which increases 10- to 50-fold during cold stress only in brown adipose tissue (BAT). Here we report that despite a normal plasma 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine (T3) concentration, cold-exposed mice with targeted disruption of the Dio2 gene (Dio2–/–) become hypothermic due to impaired BAT thermogenesis and survive by compensatory shivering with consequent acute weight loss. This occurs despite normal basal mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) concentration. In Dio2–/– brown adipocytes, the acute norepinephrine-, CL316,243-, or forskolin-induced increases in lipolysis, UCP1 mRNA, and …

Of Artifical Intelligence And Legal Reasoning, Cass R. Sunstein Nov 2001

Of Artifical Intelligence And Legal Reasoning, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Can computers, or artificial intelligence, reason by analogy? This essay urges that they cannot, because they are unable to engage in the crucial task of identifying the normative principle that links or separates cases. Current claims, about the ability of artificial intelligence to reason analogically, rest on an inadequate picture of what legal reasoning actually is. For the most part, artificial intelligence now operates as a kind of advanced version of LEXIS, offering research assistance rather than analogical reasoning. But this is a claim about current technology, not about inevitable limitations of artificial intelligence; things might change in the future.

The Importance Of Individualized Pharmaceutical Therapy In The Treatment Of Diabetes Mellitus, David B. Nash, Jennifer B. Koenig, Karen D. Novielli, Renee Liberoni, Miriam Reisman Nov 2001

The Importance Of Individualized Pharmaceutical Therapy In The Treatment Of Diabetes Mellitus, David B. Nash, Jennifer B. Koenig, Karen D. Novielli, Renee Liberoni, Miriam Reisman

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Individualized pharmaceutical care for patients with diabetes is necessary for several reasons. First, diabetes is a highly complex disease caused by the interplay among genetic, physiological, and environmental factors that vary from individual to individual. Second, the profile of patients with diabetes has evolved to include people of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds, with varying medical histories and health behaviors. Third, diabetes often occurs concurrently with other medical conditions, especially in certain groups, such as the elderly. While the treatment goals for all patients with diabetes are the sameto stabilize and maintain healthy blood glucose levels to prevent serious complicationsthe …

Polygonal Chains Cannot Lock In 4d, Roxana Cocan, Joseph O'Rourke Nov 2001

Polygonal Chains Cannot Lock In 4d, Roxana Cocan, Joseph O'Rourke

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We prove that, in all dimensions d ≥ 4, every simple open polygonal chain and every tree may be straightened, and every simple closed polygonal chain may be convexified. These reconfigurations can be achieved by algorithms that use polynomial time in the number of vertices, and result in a polynomial number of “moves.” These results contrast to those known for d = 2, where trees can “lock,” and for d = 3, where open and closed chains can lock.

Running Aground On The (Shoal) Waters Of The United States: The Supreme Court Invalidates The Migratory Bird Rule, William F. Northrip

Missouri Law Review

For the better part of the last fifty years, the Commerce Clause provided a safe harbor for congressional legislation. However, the legislative landscape began to change with the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Lopez. For the first time in nearly sixty years, an act of Congress was invalidated as exceeding the authority granted to Congress by the commerce Clause. As courts applied the stricter standard announced in Lopez, some regulations began to founder under the newly heightened scrutiny. Among the regulations that struggled in these rough waters was 33 C.F.R. § 328.3, the United States Army Corps of …

Code Blue! Ambulance Manufacturing Specifications May Pre-Empt State Common Law Claims, Michael J. Denning Nov 2001

Code Blue! Ambulance Manufacturing Specifications May Pre-Empt State Common Law Claims, Michael J. Denning

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This comment seeks to apply contemporary pre-emption jurisprudence to the area of federal purchasing specifications. The piece first lays the foundation of pre-emption, and more specifically discusses its inception and maturation, and then provides an analysis of how courts should apply these principles today. Next, the piece introduces federal purchasing specifications, specifically the specification governing the government's acquisition of ambulances. The comment argues that because the specification was written to provide federal uniformity to the ambulance manufacturing field, any state claim seeking to hold a manufacturer to a higher standard than that written into the specification should be pre-empted through …

Swimming Mechanics And Behavior Of The Shallow-Water Brief Squid Lolliguncula Brevis, Ian K. Bartol, Mark R. Patterson, Roger Mann Nov 2001

Swimming Mechanics And Behavior Of The Shallow-Water Brief Squid Lolliguncula Brevis, Ian K. Bartol, Mark R. Patterson, Roger Mann

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Although squid are among the most versatile swimmers and rely on a unique locomotor system, little is known about the swimming mechanics and behavior of most squid, especially those that swim at low speeds in inshore waters. Shallow-water brief squid Lolliguncula brevis, ranging in size from 1.8 to 8.9 cm. in dorsal mantle length (DML), were placed in flumes and videotaped, and the data were analyzed using motion-analysis equipment. Flow visualization and force measurement experiments were also performed in water tunnels. Mean critical swimming speeds (Ucrit) ranged from 15.3 to 22.8 cm s-1, and mean …

God, Man, And Law: Of Rights And Responsibilities, E. Thomas Ryder Nov 2001

God, Man, And Law: Of Rights And Responsibilities, E. Thomas Ryder

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This comment examines the evolving construction, modifications and improvements made to the "wall of separation between church and state." Initially, the comment presents an analysis of the unifying religious themes of individual responsibilities, which underlie our rights, as a reason why religion is important, even in schools. The author then reviews the historical origins and early development of the Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses, and examines modem Establishment Clause jurisprudence. The comment then examines the Cleveland, Ohio elementary school voucher program, applying current Establishment Clause jurisprudence. The conclusion then recommends embracing anew the dynamic role of religion in United States …

Is There No Simple Battery Under Illinois Law?, Azhar J. Minhas Nov 2001

Is There No Simple Battery Under Illinois Law?, Azhar J. Minhas

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This piece argues that judicial interpretation of 720 ILCS 5/12-4(b)(8) (1997) of the Illinois Criminal Code, the statute which enhances simple battery to aggravated battery, has opened the door for the abuse of prosecutorial discretion in applying the statute and has led the courts away from its true legislative intent. Specifically, the application of the statute has been overbroad and courts' interpretations of the legislative intent have been far-reaching. Through statutory analysis and the consideration of case law, the author explores the judicial expansion of section (b)(8) and argues for words of limitation in the statute that will help to …
