To Walk The Earth In Safety 3rd Edition (Fy2001), Us Dos Pm/Wra

Global CWD Repository

The United States first became involved in humanitarian demining in 1988 when it sent a team to assess the landmine situation in Afghanistan. Five years later, U.S. demining-related programs were underway in Afghanistan and seven other countries. By the end of 2001, we will have provided more than $500 million to 38 countries, as well as the Province of Kosovo and northwest Somalia, for various humanitarian demining efforts such as deminer training, mine awareness and mine clearance, as well as orthopedic assistance to, and socioeconomic reintegration programs for, landmine accident survivors and their families. Almost $100 million of this amount …

The Human Approach To World Peace, His Holiness The Dalai Lama

Peace and Conflict Studies

Excerpt

When we rise in the morning and listen to the radio or read the newspaper, we are confronted with the same sad news: violence, crime, wars and disasters. I cannot recall a single day without a report of something terrible happening somewhere. Even in these modern times it is clear that one’s precious life is not safe. No former generation has had to experience so much bad news as we face today; this constant awareness of fear and tension should make any sensitive and compassionate person question seriously the progress of our modern world.

Interactions Between Shoal Size And Conformity In Guppy Social Foraging, Rachel L. Day, Tom Macdonald, Culum Brown, Kevin N. Laland, Simon M. Reader Nov 2001

Interactions Between Shoal Size And Conformity In Guppy Social Foraging, Rachel L. Day, Tom Macdonald, Culum Brown, Kevin N. Laland, Simon M. Reader

Sentience Collection

Previous experimental studies have established that shoaling fish forage more effectively in large than small groups. We investigated how shoal size affects the foraging efficiency of laboratory populations of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, exposed to different foraging tasks. Experiment 1 confirmed the prediction that in open water the first fish and focal fish of larger shoals locate food faster than in smaller shoals. However, a second experiment, in which shoals of fish were required to swim through a hole in an opaque partition to locate food, found the reverse pattern: smaller shoals learned to complete the task faster than large …

Shared Scientific Thinking In Everyday Parent-Child Activity, Kevin Crowley, Maureen A. Callanan, Jennifer Jipson, Jodi Galco, Karen Topping, Jeff Shrager Nov 2001

Shared Scientific Thinking In Everyday Parent-Child Activity, Kevin Crowley, Maureen A. Callanan, Jennifer Jipson, Jodi Galco, Karen Topping, Jeff Shrager

Psychology and Child Development

Current accounts of the development of scientific reasoning focus on individual children's ability to coordinate the collection and evaluation of evidence with the creation of theories to explain the evidence. This observational study of parent–child interactions in a children's museum demonstrated that parents shape and support children's scientific thinking in everyday, nonobligatory activity. When children engaged an exhibit with parents, their exploration of evidence was observed to be longer, broader, and more focused on relevant comparisons than children who engaged the exhibit without their parents. Parents were observed to talk to children about how to select and encode appropriate evidence …

“Making-Face, Making-Heart”: The Spiritual Foundations Of An Indigenous Pedagogy, Ralph Casas Nov 2001

“Making-Face, Making-Heart”: The Spiritual Foundations Of An Indigenous Pedagogy, Ralph Casas

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

The author argues for the construction of pedagogical strategies that respect the learner’s context and cognitive framework, aiming for the development of an indigenous ecology of education. He brings the insights of Latin American and U.S. Latino/a theology into consideration, suggesting that the dialogue between Christian and indigenous Mesoamerican religious traditions can be both productive and practical.

Fisheries Research Report No. 130 - Environmental Requirements And Tolerances Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) And Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta) With Special Reference To Western Australia: A Review, Brett W. Molony Nov 2001

Fisheries Research Report No. 130 - Environmental Requirements And Tolerances Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) And Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta) With Special Reference To Western Australia: A Review, Brett W. Molony

Fisheries Research Reports

Both Oncorhynchus mykiss (rainbow trout) and Salmo trutta (brown trout) have a long history of translocation and culture and a wide knowledge base exists. O.mykiss is being considered as a candidate for inland aquaculture in the salinity affected areas of southern Western Australia and this review aims, in part, at providing relevant information to those considering a trout-framing venture in Western Australia. Both species of trout can survive a wide range of environmental conditions, including temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen and ammonia, with O.mykiss having a higher temperature tolerance than S.trutta. However, within the ranges of environmental conditions, each species …

Determinants Of Effective Population Size For Loci With Different Modes Of Inheritance, Jay F. Storz, U. Ramakrishnan, S. C. Alberts Nov 2001

Determinants Of Effective Population Size For Loci With Different Modes Of Inheritance, Jay F. Storz, U. Ramakrishnan, S. C. Alberts

Jay F. Storz Publications

Here we report an assessment of the determinants of effective population size (Ne) in species with overlapping generations. Specifically, we used a stochastic demographic model to investigate the influence of different life-history variables on Ne/N (where N = population census number) and the influence of sex differences in life-history variables on Ne for loci with dif¬ferent modes of inheritance. We applied an individual-based modeling approach to two datasets: one from a natural popu¬lation of savannah baboons (Papio cynocephalus) in the Amboseli basin of southern Kenya and one from a human tribal …

New Procedures To Assess Executive Functions In Preschool Children, K. A. Espy, P. M. Kaufmann, M. L. Glisky, M. D. Mcdiarmid Nov 2001

New Procedures To Assess Executive Functions In Preschool Children, K. A. Espy, P. M. Kaufmann, M. L. Glisky, M. D. Mcdiarmid

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications

Executive functions are difficult to assess in preschool children, yet the preschool period is particularly important, both in the development of behavioral control and of the brain, particularly the prefrontal cortex. Several tasks were adapted from developmental and neuroscience literature and then administered to 98 preschool children (30-, 36-, 42-, 48- and 60-month age groups). Executive function task performance was related largely to age group, but not to sex or intelligence. These tasks, then, were sensitive in this age range and may be useful to delineate distinct cognitive profiles among preschool children with various neurological and developmental disorders.

Fisheries Research Report No. 127 - A 12-Month Survey Of Recreational Fishing In The Peel-Harvey Estuary Of Western Australia During 1998-99, B E. Malseed, Neil R. Sumner

Fisheries Research Reports

A survey of recreational boat-based and shore-based fishing in the Peel-Harvey Estuary was conducted between August 1998 and July 1999. During the survey 1,996 interviews were conducted at boat ramps. Of these, 1,136 boats had been crabbing and 136 angling in the estuary (43 were both crabbing and angling). In addition to the interviews at boat ramps, 909 shore-based fishing parties were interviewed.

The survey estimated the total annual boat-based recreational fishing effort as 126,000 fisher days, with 88% of this effort targeting blue swimmer crabs. The total annual shore-based recreational fishing effort was estimated to be 191,000 fisher days, …

Fisheries Research Report No. 129 - Morphology And Incidence Of Yabby (Cherax Albidus) Burrows In Western Australia, Craig S. Lawrence

Fisheries Research Reports

Yabby (Cherax albidus) burrows were recorded from dams, channels and ponds in Western Australia. Twenty five sites were sampled during Spring, 1998 and the burrow morphology and density was described from six of these locations where burrows were present. To improve the sample size and address seasonal trends 49 commercially harvested yabby dams were sampled over the summer of 1999/2000 and the number and density of yabby burrows were recorded. Burrow incidence and morphology was also recorded from 25 research ponds at the Avondale Research Station between 1995-1997. Soil and water chemistry values are presented and their relationships with burrow …

The Islamic Paradigm Of Nations: Toward A Neo-Classical Approach, Amr G.E. Sabet

Peace and Conflict Studies

Excerpt

As late as 1966, Martin Wight could still pose the question: “why is there no international relations theory?” By this he meant the absence of a tradition of speculation about relations between states, family of nations, or the international community, comparable to that of political theory as speculation about the state. To the extent that it did exist, it was marked by “intellectual and moral poverty” caused both by the prejudice imposed by the sovereign state and the belief in progress (Wight 1995: 15-16 &19). Unlike political theory, which has been progressivist in its concern with pursuing interests of …

Sensitivity Of Bovine Blastocyst Gene Expression Patterns To Culture Environments Assessed By Differential Display Rt-Pcr., D R Natale, P A De Sousa, M E Westhusin, A J Watson Nov 2001

Sensitivity Of Bovine Blastocyst Gene Expression Patterns To Culture Environments Assessed By Differential Display Rt-Pcr., D R Natale, P A De Sousa, M E Westhusin, A J Watson

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

The use of culture media to support the development of preimplantation embryos to the blastocyst stage is often associated with detrimental effects on normal development. These effects have been uncovered largely by investigating the phenotypic abnormalities displayed by fetuses and newborns derived from cultured preimplantation embryos. Research to understand the impact of culture on the embryonic developmental programme has focused on embryo metabolism, gene expression and genomic imprinting. We have used differential display RT-PCR to examine culture influences on global transcript pools in bovine embryos. Others have examined culture influences on candidate "marker genes" in cultured murine, ovine and bovine …

Modeling Bighorn Sheep Habitat In Northwest Nebraska, Kyle M. Forbes Nov 2001

Modeling Bighorn Sheep Habitat In Northwest Nebraska, Kyle M. Forbes

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In recent years geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing technologies have been used extensively in habitat suitability modeling. By incorporating these technologies, scientists often gain the ability to formulate and implement a more detailed habitat suitability model with the addition of more detailed spatial information. A habitat suitability model was developed to quantify and describe the available suitable Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) habitat in the Pine Ridge of northwestern Nebraska and determine if a minimum viable population (MVP) of this species can be supported naturally in the region. The model included a strong spatial …

Enzymological And Radiotracer Studies Of Lipid Metabolism In The Flight-Capable And Flightless Morphs Of The Wing-Polymorphic Cricket, Gryllus Firmus, Z. Zhao, Anthony J. Zera Nov 2001

Enzymological And Radiotracer Studies Of Lipid Metabolism In The Flight-Capable And Flightless Morphs Of The Wing-Polymorphic Cricket, Gryllus Firmus, Z. Zhao, Anthony J. Zera

Anthony Zera Publications

The flight-capable morph of the wing-polymorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus, exhibited significantly higher activities of each of five lipogenic enzymes compared with the obligately flightless morph on a standard and a high-carbohydrate diet during early adulthood. Similarly, the rate of incorporation of [14C]-acetate into total lipid was higher in the flight-capable morph during this time. By contrast, activities of lipogenic enzymes and rates of lipid biosynthesis, in general, did not differ between morphs on a low nutrient diet during early adulthood. Differences in lipid biosynthesis account for previously documented differences in lipid reserves between morphs on some, but …
