Building The Clinton Legacy Through Frame Alignment, Roberta L. Coles Nov 2001

Building The Clinton Legacy Through Frame Alignment, Roberta L. Coles

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This article examines Clinton’s rhetorical strategy for creating a legacy in light of the imminent end of his second and final term as president. By examining Clinton’s public discourse from 1997 to 1999, with special attention to the period from September 1998 to June 1999, this article argues that Clinton used the frame of his race initiative to centripetally incorporate varied events and policies to redefine and bolster his legacy in the aftermath of scandal and political polarity. Specifically, President Clinton, with an eye on the legacy of the president and the identity of the Democratic Party, gathered the war …

Asymmetrical Response Of P38 Kinase Activation To Volume Changes In Primary Rat Astrocytes, Dazhong Xu, Ling Wang, James E. Olson, Luo Lu Nov 2001

Asymmetrical Response Of P38 Kinase Activation To Volume Changes In Primary Rat Astrocytes, Dazhong Xu, Ling Wang, James E. Olson, Luo Lu

Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications

Activation of p38 kinase by osmotic stress has been documented in many cells; however, no report has distinguished the effects of cell volume on p38 activity from the effects of the altered osmotic condition per se. Here we report asymmetrical activation of astrocyte p38 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase in response to volume increases and volume decreases. We separate effects of cell volume changes from the effects of osmotic exposure on p38 activation. Exposure to 400, 500, or 600 mOsm phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) caused cell shrinkage and an osmolality-dependent increase in p38 activity to 175%, 409%, or 518%, respectively, compared with …

Differential Expression Of Cadherin-2 And Cadherin-4 In The Developing And Adult Zebrafish Visual System, Qin Liu, S. G. Babb, Z. M. Novince, A. L. Doedens, J. Marrs, P. A. Raymond Nov 2001

Differential Expression Of Cadherin-2 And Cadherin-4 In The Developing And Adult Zebrafish Visual System, Qin Liu, S. G. Babb, Z. M. Novince, A. L. Doedens, J. Marrs, P. A. Raymond

Biology Faculty Research

Cadherins are homophilic cell adhesion molecules that control development of a variety of tissues and maintenance of adult structures. Although cadherins have been implicated in the development of the brain, including the visual system, in several vertebrate species, little is known of their role in zebrafish. In this study, we examined distribution of cadherin-2 (Cdh2, N-cadherin) in the visual system of developing and adult zebrafish using both immunocytochemical and in situ hybridization methods, and we compared Cdh2 distribution to that of the previously reported and closely related cadherin-4 (Cdh4, R-cadherin). As in other vertebrates, in zebrafish embryos Cdh2 was widely …

An Interactive Journey: Creative Development For Young Children, Nattawan Wanglee Nov 2001

An Interactive Journey: Creative Development For Young Children, Nattawan Wanglee

Theses

Creativity begins in infancy and can be developed when children grow up. Young children are at their peak of creative functioning, which declines with age. They are unique individuals and are highly imaginative. Creativity and imagination are strongly related. Even though all children are capable of creativity, the potential to create remains dormant without practice. Creativity requires practice to flourish. Therefore, creativity plays an important role as much as knowledge does. To educate children, creativity also needs to be paid attention too. Children should be encouraged to represent their world creatively by allowing them to choose what they want to …

Elements And Principles: Experiencing Design Principles Through Interactivity, Niramon Wongsirisup Nov 2001

Elements And Principles: Experiencing Design Principles Through Interactivity, Niramon Wongsirisup

Theses

A designer is a practical person who confronts visual assignments with a process of visual creation. The creative process is used to solve practical problems that occur in any design assignment. However, before one is ready to solve any problem, one must understand the depth and range of their design language. If one's understanding of design is limited, then the range of possible solutions to a problem will be limited. My thesis aims to broaden and enrich a vocabulary of design through the study of its essential elements and principles. If we familiarize ourselves with a multitude of books, we …

Is Traffic Organized On Trails Of The Leaf Cutting Ant Atta Cephalotes?, November 2001, Angela C. Rao Nov 2001

Is Traffic Organized On Trails Of The Leaf Cutting Ant Atta Cephalotes?, November 2001, Angela C. Rao

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The leaf cutting tribe Attini (Formicidae: Myrmicinae) shows numerous adaptations that increase foraging efficiency. Such adaptations are seen in their highly polymorphic caste systems, trails branching from many different exit holes, clearing and maintenance of foraging trails, and pheromonal signaling and recruitment. It is reasonable to assume that mechanisms exist that would reduce incidence of collisions, traffic jams, etc., on foraging trails. This hypothesis was tested by recording trail density and time, linear distance, and direction of ant travel on the trails of Atta Cephalotes and looking for certain trends. Ants traveling towards the nest were not found to vary …

Bat Morphology And Pollinator Specificity In A Neotropical Cloud Forest, November 2001, Kiva Rice Nov 2001

Bat Morphology And Pollinator Specificity In A Neotropical Cloud Forest, November 2001, Kiva Rice

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This study explores the degree of specialization of nectarivorous bat species and the plants they visit by examining pollen loads. The bat species involved are Anoura geoffroyi, Glossophaga commissarisi, and Hylonycteris underwoodi, all of which feed on nectar and are found in the cloud forests of Monteverde. Five nights were spent mist-netting and pollen samples were taken from the head, fore-body and back of each individual caught. These were placed on slides that were observed under a microscope and pollen morphospecies were counted. Twenty-two pollen morphospecies were found and a few were identified. A 1-way ANOVA test was conducted to …

Predicting Leaf/Stem Ratio And Nutritive Value In Grazed And Nongrazed Big Bluestem, Alexander J. Smart, Walter H. Schacht, Lowell E. Moser

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Recent advancements in describing morphological development of perennial grasses have provided a useful index for identifying dates to harvest hay or graze pasture. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman) morphological developmental stage, days from 1 May, and accumulated growing degree days (GDD) and leaf/stem ratio, crude protein (CP), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) in grazed and nongrazed swards. The grazing experiment was conducted in eastern Nebraska during 1997 and 1998. Six grazing treatments consisting of all combinations of two herbage allowances (22 or 66 kg of herbage dry matter …

Genetic And Environmental Risk Factors Associated With Colon Cancer, Shamma Rashed Khalfan Al-Naili Al-Shamsi Nov 2001

Genetic And Environmental Risk Factors Associated With Colon Cancer, Shamma Rashed Khalfan Al-Naili Al-Shamsi

Theses

Colorectal cancer represents one of the most common causes of mortality in the world. A major number of populations develop an adenoma by the age of 40s. Over the past years, it has become clear that genetic factors are of crucial importance in colorectal tumorigenesis. Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is responsible of developing numerous colorectal cancers cases by causing mutations in the germline in adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) genes.

Colon cancer is considered the second most frequent cause of death in most of the Western countries. Colonic cancer is common in women and rectal in men. It arise in adenomatous …

馬克思主義概念翻譯在中國1900-1949, Yongye Xiao Nov 2001

馬克思主義概念翻譯在中國1900-1949, Yongye Xiao

Lingnan Theses

On The Choice Between The Stocking Rate And Time In Range Management, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Basudeb Biswas, E. Bruce Godfrey Nov 2001

On The Choice Between The Stocking Rate And Time In Range Management, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Basudeb Biswas, E. Bruce Godfrey

Articles

A long standing question in range management concerns the relative importance of the stocking rate versus the length of time during which animals graze a particular rangeland. We address this question by analyzing the problem faced by a private rancher who wishes to minimize the long run expected net unit cost (LRENC) from range operations by choosing either the stock rate or the length of time during which his animals graze his rangeland. We construct a renewal-theoretic model and show that, in general, this rancher's LRENC with an optimally chosen stocking rate is lower than his LRENC with an optimally …

The Effect Of Resource Aggregation At Different Scales: Optimal Foraging Behavior Of Cotesia Rubecula, Brigitte Tenhumberg, Michael A. Keller, Andrew J. Tyre, Hugh P. Possingham Nov 2001

The Effect Of Resource Aggregation At Different Scales: Optimal Foraging Behavior Of Cotesia Rubecula, Brigitte Tenhumberg, Michael A. Keller, Andrew J. Tyre, Hugh P. Possingham

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Resources can be aggregated both within and between patches. In this article, we examine how aggregation at these different scales influences the behavior and performance of foragers. We developed an optimal foraging model of the foraging behavior of the parasitoid wasp Cotesia rubecula parasitizing the larvae of the cabbage butterfly Pieris rapae. The optimal behavior was found using stochastic dynamic programming. The most interesting and novel result is that the effect of resource aggregation within and between patches depends on the degree of aggregation both within and between patches as well as on the local host density in the occupied …

The Limits Of Localism, Richard C. Schragger Nov 2001

The Limits Of Localism, Richard C. Schragger

Michigan Law Review

In Chicago v. Morales, the Supreme Court struck down Chicago's Gang Congregation Ordinance, which barred "criminal street gang members from loitering with one another or with other persons in any public place." The stated purpose of the ordinance was to wrest control of public areas from gang members who, simply by their presence, intimidated the public and established control over identifiable areas of the city, namely certain inner-city streets, sidewalks, and corners. The ordinance required that police officers determine whether at least one of two or more persons present in a public place were members of a criminal street gang …
