Effects Of Three Clipping Managements On Growth And Production Of A Kentucky Bluegrass-Clover Sward, Beverly Ellen Sedon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The effect of three clipping managements on the growth and production of Kentucky bluegrass was investigated at the West Virginia University Livestock Farm. Herbage accumulation, botanical composition, leaf extension rate (LER), leaf appearance rate (LAR), and tiller density were observed. The sward was clipped to three heights, 2.5, 5.1, and 7.6 cm, from a recovery growth of 13 to 15 cm. Nitrogen was applied in split applications twice a year at three rates (0, 80, and 160 kg N ha-1). Herbage accumulation and growth rates were higher in 2000 than 1999. Rainfall was higher in 2000 than in 1999. Low …

Where Is My Body? Stanley Fish's Long Goodbye To Law, Richard Delgado May 2001

Where Is My Body? Stanley Fish's Long Goodbye To Law, Richard Delgado

Michigan Law Review

Stanley Fish, author of Doing What Comes Naturally, Is There a Text in This Class?, There's No Such Thing as Free Speech, and It's a Good Thing, Too, and other paradigm-shifting books, and who recently left law teaching for a position in university administration, has written one last volume giving his colleagues in the profession he left behind something to think about. In his previous work, Fish, who taught English and law at Duke University, addressed central legal issues such as meaning, communication, and textual interpretation, challenging such received wisdoms as that every text has a single, determinate meaning, or …

Taking Aim At An American Myth, Paul Finkelman May 2001

Taking Aim At An American Myth, Paul Finkelman

Michigan Law Review

Every American had a musket hanging over his fireplace at night, and by his side during the day. Like Cincinnatus, time and again Americans dropped their plows to shoulder their arms, to fight the Indians, the French, the Indians, the British, the Indians, the Mexicans, the Indians yet again, and then, from 1861 to 1865, each other. American men were comfortable with guns; they needed them and wanted them. They felt at home in woods, in search of food, or in defense of their homesteads. It is a story as old as our first pulp novels and earliest movies. It …

Parenthood Divided: A Legal History Of The Bifurcated Law Of Parental Relations., Jill Elaine Hasday May 2001

Parenthood Divided: A Legal History Of The Bifurcated Law Of Parental Relations., Jill Elaine Hasday

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

The American law of parent and child is conventionally understood to be extremely deferential to parental prerogatives and highly reluctant to intervene. But this picture, endorsed by legal authorities and popular commentators from the nineteenth century to the present day, reflects only one tradition in the law’s regulation of parenthood. Since the last quarter of the nineteenth century, there has also been massive legal intervention into the parental relation. This second legal tradition, moreover, has been guided by norms wholly different from those conventionally associated with family law, often evincing a radical suspicion of parental autonomy and an eager willingness …

Ecology Of Treeline Whitebark Pine (Pinus Albicaulis) Populations In Central Idaho: Successional Status, Recruitment, And Mortality, And A Spring Temperature Reconstruction From Whitebark Pine Tree Rings, Dana Lee Perkins May 2001

Ecology Of Treeline Whitebark Pine (Pinus Albicaulis) Populations In Central Idaho: Successional Status, Recruitment, And Mortality, And A Spring Temperature Reconstruction From Whitebark Pine Tree Rings, Dana Lee Perkins

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This research investigated the successional status of treeline whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) populations on 14 stands in central Idaho and used empirical statistical models to determine the principal factors affecting recruitment and mortality. The longest lived whitebark pines from four additional high-elevation sites were used to develop a tree-ring chronology to reconstruct over 1,000 years of average April-May temperature.

The assessment of stand structures using size-frequency distributions generally provides evidence that treeline whitebark pine populations are currently self-sustaining in areas of low to nonexistent incidence of white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola). However the presence of …

Clumping Factor A Mediates Binding Of Staphylococcus Aureus To Human Platelets, Ian R. Siboo, Ambrose L. Cheung, Arnold S. Bayer, Paul M. Sullam

Dartmouth Scholarship

The direct binding of bacteria to platelets may be an important virulence mechanism in the pathogenesis of infective endocarditis. We have previously described Staphylococcus aureus strain PS12, a Tn551-derived mutant of strain ISP479, with reduced ability to bind human platelets in vitro. When tested in an animal model of endocarditis, the PS12 strain was less virulent than its parental strain, as measured by bacterial densities in endocardial vegetations and incidence of systemic embolization. We have now characterized the gene disrupted in PS12 and its function in platelet binding. DNA sequencing, Southern blotting, and PCR analysis indicate that PS12 contained two …

Investigation Of Heat Transfer Enhancement In Conceptual Two-Pass Channels For Gas Turbine Internal Cooling, Gautam Pamula May 2001

Investigation Of Heat Transfer Enhancement In Conceptual Two-Pass Channels For Gas Turbine Internal Cooling, Gautam Pamula

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Modern gas turbines operate at high inlet temperatures due to which various components undergo severe thermal and mechanical stresses and fatigue. Suitable materials for withstanding such severe conditions are not available or are too expensive to manufacture. As a consequence, components need to be cooled to sustainable temperatures and efficient cooling strategies need to be developed. This study presents new internal cooling designs for turbine blades that eliminate the need for rib turbulators in internal passages producing significantly higher heat transfer enhancements. Detailed local heat transfer coefficient data of the proposed new designs (swirl generation using tangentially injected coolant from …

The Effects Of Section 508: The Rehabilitation Act And Electroni And Information Technology Accessibility Standards On Federal Agency Web Site Development, Shawn M. Schuur

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

This project will consider the effects Section 508, The Workforce Investment Act of 1998 will have on current and future website development at federal agencies. Section 508 requires, in part, that federally funded websites allow individuals with disabilities to have the same level of access to information as individuals without disabilities. Using the USGS EROS Data Center as a case study for this project I will first provide an analysis of websites compliancy with Section 508. Second, using Section 508's standards I will modify EROS' websites to conform to those standards. Finally, I will provide an analysis of the changes …

Chemical Evaluation Of Commercial Drinking Water, Nyesom Samuel Dike May 2001

Chemical Evaluation Of Commercial Drinking Water, Nyesom Samuel Dike

Theses (Pre-2016)

The determination of anions, cations and trace metals in drinking water is becoming increasingly important due to health problems associated with these inorganic and organic contaminants. In the Houston metropolitan area, our basic sources of drinking water are the municipal water and commercial bottled water. Most often, the decision to use either or both of these water sources stems from the fear that the "water in the Houston area is contaminated." In the recent study conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) on bottled water, the astonishing conclusion was that some of the bottled water contain contaminants that would …

Play Behavior In Infant Western Lowland Gorillas (Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla) At The Lincoln Park Zoo, Suma Mallavarapu

Honors Theses

An ethological investigation was made on a group of western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) at the Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago. Focal animal sampling and all-occurrences sampling were used to collect data during the months of June and July 2000. Qualitative observations were made of the general behavioral patterns of the group, which included feeding and drinking behavior, resting, sleeping, nest construction, grooming behavior, group behavior, dominance hierarchies, zoo-keeper and public oriented behavior, and behavior in novel stimuli situations. Except for female dominance hierarchies, all behavioral patterns were found to be similar to those reported for feral gorillas. …

Experimental Analysis Of Metabolic Adaptation Of Cottus Carolinae In Response To Photoperiod And Food Availability, Linda L. Brison May 2001

Experimental Analysis Of Metabolic Adaptation Of Cottus Carolinae In Response To Photoperiod And Food Availability, Linda L. Brison

Honors Theses

Epigean (surface) and hypogean (cave) habitats differ significantly, thereby influencing organisms that inhabit these environments in varying ways. As organisms move from surface to cave environments, they. adapt to cave conditions: constant darkness, relatively constant temperatures year-round, low food availability, and high humidity. Fish adjusted to cave life often experience reductions in pigmentation, eye size, and metabolic rate. Metabolism is, in general, influenced by temperature, seasonal• • changes, photoperiod, and food availability. The objective of this research was to understand the alteration of metabolic rate in laboratory acclimated Cottus carolinae (banded sculpin) in response to photoperiod and food availability.

Metabolic …

The Effect Of Elevation And Location On The Fitness Of Heliconiaceae Monteverdensis (Heliconiaceae), May 2001, Katherine Long May 2001

The Effect Of Elevation And Location On The Fitness Of Heliconiaceae Monteverdensis (Heliconiaceae), May 2001, Katherine Long

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Heliconia monteverdensis is a species of Heliconiaceae that is endemic to the Monteverde cloud forestof Costa Rica. A limited amount of research has been conducted concerning H. monteverdensis, therefore, little is known about its life history. In this study, simple observations are reported with regards to its distribution, physical characteristics and interactions with its community. The effect of location and elevation on the fitness, (the ability of the plant to survive and reproduce), of H. monteverdensis was also studied. The three locations compared were the Atlantic slope, the Pacific slope and the Ridge in between the two slopes. Five parameters …
