Variations In The Histamine Content Of Mink Testes Due To Injections Of Gonadotrophic Hormones And Application Of Free Radicals In Vitro, Grant I. Wilson
Variations In The Histamine Content Of Mink Testes Due To Injections Of Gonadotrophic Hormones And Application Of Free Radicals In Vitro, Grant I. Wilson
Biology
It was hypothesized that gonadotropic hormones and oxygen-derived free radicals affect histamine production in the testes. Luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, prolactin, a combination of these three hormones, or saline (controls) were injected for either 4 or 7 days into seven wild-type (demi) and seven dark male mink per group. All mink were euthanized with carbon monoxide. Their testes were removed and frozen on dry ice. The histamine content was analyzed using radioimmunoassay. The control wild-type mink injected for either 4 or 7 days had histamine values of 8.15 μg/g and 7.56 μg/g, respectively. In wild-type mink, there was no …

Density And Feeding Of Brachypelma Mesomelas (Araneae: Theraphosidae) In A Costa Rican Cloud Forest, May 2001, Nathan Damstra
Density And Feeding Of Brachypelma Mesomelas (Araneae: Theraphosidae) In A Costa Rican Cloud Forest, May 2001, Nathan Damstra
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Brachypelma mesomelas is endemic to Costa Rica and found widely distributed from 500m to 2000m in elevation. Their relative densities in any given area may be due to limited prey availability, or lack of sufficient burrows sites. To determine whether or not prey availability was a limiting factor in actual density, prey availability was determined through sampling using pitfall traps. Prey availability was then compared to results of required prey density determined through feeding experiments. Available burrow density was determined and compared to actual B. mesomelas density to determine whether or not burrow availability was a limiting factor in density. …
Not Interaction But Melding—The "Russian Dressing" Theory Of Emotions: An Explanation Of The Phenomenology Of Emotions And Rationality With Suggested Related Maxims For Judges And Other Legal Decision Makers, Peter Brandon Bayer
Mercer Law Review
Even after centuries of contrary philosophy and psychology, many commentators, jurisprudes, and law makers insist that emotions have no legitimate place in most legal decision making. This recalcitrance, of course, is misplaced in light of the powerful body of theory explaining that without emotions, decisions, including matters of law and policy, simply cannot be made. Judges, along with all societal actors, must disabuse themselves of the fallacious belief that emotions obstruct or obscure reason in all endeavors, particularly morality, law, and justice.
The project of truly apprehending emotions, however, requires more than appreciating that they play a crucial role in …

Linking Creativity And Psychological Type, Marci Segal
Linking Creativity And Psychological Type, Marci Segal
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
This project reviews the author's discoveries linking creativity with psychological type and Keirsey's Temperament theory. These form the foundation of her newly published work. Creativity and Personality Type: Tools for Understanding and Inspiring the Many Voices of Creativity (2001). Facilitators often design and lead creative problem solving sessions that match their own style without awareness that group and client needs may be different. When that occurs, participants are less able to fully engage. Cognitive process and motivational drives described though psychological type and Temperament frameworks show how this may be so. Recommendations are given for facilitators to maximize their impact …
Budding Translation, Milner S. Ball

Among the American classics in my library, Black Elk Speaks is one of the least willing to rest closed on the shelf. It is the story of a vision, the duty that accompanies the vision, and the life of those whom the vision would animate. It can be justly read as tragedy, indictment, and struggle with the past. But it can also be read as affirmation and as invocation of hope for the future, possibilities that present themselves on this revisit. There are risks in making Black Elk Speaks the subject of a Classics Revisited, more risks than in Kenji …

Lengthening The Stem: Allowing Federally Funded Researchers To Derive Human Pluripotent Stem Cells From Embryos, Jason H. Casell
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Recent developments in fetal tissue research and stem cell research have led to dramatic breakthroughs in the search for cures for Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, and a host of neurological disorders. Because this research involves fetal tissue and stem cells from human embryos, many complicated ethical and legal implications surround it. This Note explores the history of fetal tissue research and stem cell research, examines the surrounding ethical and legal issues, looks at the current state of federal law, and concludes that Congress should allow federally funded researchers to derive stem cells from discarded human embryos obtained from in …

Pride Water Quality Assessment Report: Iv. Nutrient Assessment, Kentucky Water Resources Research Institute, University Of Kentucky
KWRRI Research Reports
The efficient utilization of federal funds in improving the water quality and aquatic habitat of the region requires a mechanism for assessing and evaluating the impacts of the proposed and ongoing projects as well as some mechanism for prioritizing the allocation of additional funds. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of these projects it is important to provide a formal monitoring and assessment program based on sound scientific principles. This report provides an initial 10 year baseline assessment of the existing water quality conditions in the 40 county PRIDE region for the purpose of evaluating the impacts of the PRIDE …

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Research in psychology and behavioral finance is surveyed for evidence to what extent experts such as professional investment managers or endowment trustees may behave in such a way as to help perpetuate speculative bubbles in financial markets. This paper discusses scholarly psychological literature on the representativeness heuristic, overconfidence, attentional anomalies, self-esteem, conformity pressures, salience and justification for insights into weaknesses in expert opinion. The role of the prudent person standard and the news media in influencing experts is considered. The relevance of the literature on testing of the efficient markets theory is discussed.

Historical And Contemporary Distributions Of Aquatic Mollusks In The Upper Conasauga River System Of Georgia And Tennessee, Robert Ryan Evans
Historical And Contemporary Distributions Of Aquatic Mollusks In The Upper Conasauga River System Of Georgia And Tennessee, Robert Ryan Evans
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The Conasauga River, an upper Coosa River tributary, was historically one of the most diverse rivers within the Mobile basin drainage for freshwater mollusks. The Conasauga River historically supported 37 species of unionids (Bivalvia: Unionidae), 11 species of prosobranch gastropods (Mollusca: Gastropoda), and 3 species of sphaerid (Bivalvia: Sphaeridae) clams. I collected records from several museums ranging from 1914 to 1990 to chronicle the historical diversity of the Conasauga River system, and conducted a contemporary survey to compare changes in species distributions and richness over the twentieth century. During this study, a total of203 collections were made in the mainstem …
