Recreation, Livestock Grazing, And Protected Resource Values In The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Lael Palmer May 2001

Recreation, Livestock Grazing, And Protected Resource Values In The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Lael Palmer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis reports the results of a project which identified differences in characteristics of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument user groups as they related to their perceptions of how they experience the Monument as recreationists. It explored opinions of four groups: hikers vs. hunters and pre-designation users vs. post-designation users. Responses of these groups were compared for attribution of perceived resource damage, feelings of crowding, acceptability of management action, and importance of identified monument values to their visit. In addition, characteristics of the users were examined to determine if demographic characteristics accounted for differences in perception toward the resources. Finally, how …

An Ethical Framework For Interpreting The United States Endangered Species Act, Cathryn M. Elgin May 2001

An Ethical Framework For Interpreting The United States Endangered Species Act, Cathryn M. Elgin

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In this study I argue that a holistic approach is better than an individualistic approach for interpreting the United States Endangered Species Act (ESA). I propose that the use of a holistic ethical framework, based on fundamental environmental philosophy, is better in that it more effectively fulfills the ESA's goals of species and ecosystem conservation. Holistic ethics is based on concern for a community as a whole, while individualistic ethics is based on concern for the individual. A holistic approach, I argue, is more beneficial to nature than is an individualistic approach or other non-holistic approaches. I set up basic …

Computational Evolutionary Linguistics, Tracy Vancort May 2001

Computational Evolutionary Linguistics, Tracy Vancort

HMC Senior Theses

Languages and species both evolve by a process of repeated divergences, which can be described with the branching of a phylogenetic tree or phylogeny. Taking advantage of this fact, it is possible to study language change using computational tree building techniques developed for evolutionary biology. Mathematical approaches to the construction of phylogenies fall into two major categories: character based and distance based methods. Character based methods were used in prior work in the application of phylogenetic methods to the Indo-European family of languages by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. Discussion of the limitations of character-based models leads to a …

Two Necessities Of Poetry: Plenitude And Exuberance, Marianne Rogoff May 2001

Two Necessities Of Poetry: Plenitude And Exuberance, Marianne Rogoff

Collected Faculty Scholarship

"Alicia Ostriker advocates a 'poetics of ardor,' one which is not detached, objective, or merely intellectual, instead a poetry that embraces a big-hearted and practical definition of what erotic means. Dancing at the Devil’s Party is mostly about women’s poetry but Ostriker also reminds us of the wide-reaching sensuality of Whitman, Hopkins, Keats, and other sexy male forebears who permitted love to appear in their work."

Psychodrama And The Training Of Trial Lawyers: Finding The Story, Dana K. Cole May 2001

Psychodrama And The Training Of Trial Lawyers: Finding The Story, Dana K. Cole

Northern Illinois University Law Review

I attempt in this article to make trial lawyers and trial advocacy teachers aware of this tool called psychodrama and how it is being used in preparation for trial and at trial. But psychodrama is an action method. Writing an article about psychodrama is like writing a manual on how to swim. You will have only a slightly better understanding of swimming after studying a Red Cross manual on how to perform the various strokes. It is not until you are in the water that you will begin to fully appreciate the concept. So it is with psychodrama. No article …

Retelling Allotment: Indian Property Rights And The Myth Of Common Ownership, Kenneth H. Bobroff May 2001

Retelling Allotment: Indian Property Rights And The Myth Of Common Ownership, Kenneth H. Bobroff

Vanderbilt Law Review

The division of Native American reservations into individually owned parcels was an unquestionable disaster. Authorized by the General Allotment Act of 1887, allotment cost Indians two-thirds of their land and left much of the remainder effectively useless as it passed to successive generations of owners. The conventional understanding, shared by scholars, judges, policymakers, and activists alike, has been that allotment failed because it imposed individual ownership on people who had never known private property. Before allotment, so this story goes, Indians had always owned their land in common. Because Indians had no conception of private property, they were unable to …

Genetic Evaluation Of Cytochrome P450 Expression In Smoking And Nonsmoking Women, Satya Vijayanand Vadlamuri May 2001

Genetic Evaluation Of Cytochrome P450 Expression In Smoking And Nonsmoking Women, Satya Vijayanand Vadlamuri

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

1. Regiospecific expression of CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 in human uterus of nonsmokers. The goal of this study was to investigate the expression of these isoforms in different regions of the human uterus. Expression was determined in the endometrium, endocervix and squamous (exocervix) regions from six nonsmoking women by using RT-PCR. The transcripts encoding for CYP1A1 were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the squamous (exocervix) region compared to other areas. However the expression of CYP1B1 was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the endometrium. CYP1B1 expression appeared to be extremely low in a woman in the secretory stage of the menstrual phase, relative to the endometrium of the other patients who were all in the proliferative stage at hysterectomy. It appears that variability in the expression of these isoforms may be responsible for the differential susceptibility to cancer in women.;2. Influence of menstrual phase and smoking status on expression of CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 in different regions of the uterus. The goal of this study was to investigate the expression of these isoforms in different regions of the uterus from smokers and nonsmokers. These results indicate that CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 are expressed variably in different regions of the human uterus. The expression of CYP1B1 may be susceptible both to hormonal control and cigarette smoking. The variability in the expression of these isoforms may be responsible for the differential susceptibility to cancer in some women.;3. The effect of menstrual phase on CYP3A expression in human endometrium. The CYP3A family consists of four closely related proteins. Of these, CYP3A3/4 is the most abundant P450 isoform and is responsible for metabolizing estrogen as well as a variety of therapeutic agents, whereas CYP3A7, the fetal liver form, is involved in the biosynthesis of estriol. The goal of this study was to evaluate the expression of these two major CYP3A isoforms in human uterine tissue during the proliferative (PROL) and secretory (SEC) phases of the menstrual cycle. Expression of CYP3A7 in endometrium appeared to be several fold higher (∼10-fold) in the proliferative phase compared to the secretory phase. CYP3A4 expression was comparable between the two phases of the menstrual cycle. The RTPCR results indicated differential expression of CYP3A7 in various phases of the menstrual cycle. These results indicate that CYP3A isoforms may be subject to hormonal regulation during the menstrual cycle in endometrium of premenopausal women. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

English In The University Of Excellence, Joe Morris May 2001

English In The University Of Excellence, Joe Morris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

"The modern University," according to Bill Readings, "has had three ideas: the Kantian concept of reason, the Humboldtian idea of culture, and now the technobureaucratic notion of excellence." "Excellence" euphemistically describes the principle of the university as corporation, as geared toward revenue rather than ideology. This portrayal raises difficult questions for the humanities, as ideological domains. Taking Readings's The University in Ruins as a starting point, this study examines the English discipline within the "university of excellence," considering West Virginia University's department as a case study. It begins by charting the evolution of WVU's self-understanding, from an institution of culture …

Using Virtual Reality For Requirements Validation, Dejan Desovski May 2001

Using Virtual Reality For Requirements Validation, Dejan Desovski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Failures of high consequence systems are intolerable. Studies have shown that a significant percentage of safety problems can be traced back to errors in the specification. An important problem that arises during validation is how to include a domain expert in this process. Although the domain experts have exclusive knowledge about the system operation, they may not understand formalisms used for system specification.;Essential type of "evidence" of the correctness of the formalization process must be provided by human-based calculation. Human calculation can be significantly amplified by shifting from symbolic representation to graphical representations. This, in turn, provides an environment for …

What Has The Visual Arts Rights Act Of 1990 Accomplished?, William M. Landes May 2001

What Has The Visual Arts Rights Act Of 1990 Accomplished?, William M. Landes

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This paper presents an economic analysis of the Visual Arts Rights Act of 1990 (VARA) which provides attribution and integrity rights, commonly called moral rights, for defined types of artistic works. The paper shows that these laws may actually harm artists by adding contracting and transaction costs in the art market. For most works, these costs will be trivial because collectors have a strong self-interest in preserving the works in good condition. These costs are likely to be significant, however, for works subject to destruction or alteration in the future, such as sitespecific works and works installed in buildings, because …

Cohousing: Beneficial For People, Communities, And The Environment, Claire E. Butler May 2001

Cohousing: Beneficial For People, Communities, And The Environment, Claire E. Butler

Master's Projects

Cohousing is the name of a type of collaborative housing that has been developed in the past thirty years. It attempts to overcome the alienation of modern subdivisions in which few people know their neighbors and tries to increase the sense of community. This type of housing development is similar to a traditional village or a close-knit neighborhood and some liken it to the best of small-town America where many of us grew up.

Cohousing is characterized by private, self-sufficient dwelling units; each having their own kitchen, living room, dining room, and bedrooms. Each cohousing development also has a common …

Nesting Behavior Of The Female And Male Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus Mocinno), May 2001, Jennifer Heller May 2001

Nesting Behavior Of The Female And Male Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus Mocinno), May 2001, Jennifer Heller

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Knowledge of nesting behaviors of tropical birds, even for the magnificent Resplendent Quetzal, comes from few records of observations outside the nest. However, the popularity of the bird in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve inspired the Tropical Science Center to place a camera inside one of the box nests just before the 2000 nesting season. I studied the images taken during the entire nesting period. Upon analysis of the data, I found that parental care and behavior changed significantly as the chick aged. Additionally, only females slept in the nest, and although both the male and female brooded and attended …

Territoriality And Courtship Behavior In Male Anartia Fatima (Nymphalinae), May 2001, Frazier Cristianne May 2001

Territoriality And Courtship Behavior In Male Anartia Fatima (Nymphalinae), May 2001, Frazier Cristianne

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Chasing behavior in butterflies may be the result of territorial defense or simply the result of mate location. Such aggressive behavior is frequently observed in male Anartia fatima. It was hypothesized that older male Anartia fatima would be more aggressive than younger males, who have less to lose if they do not defend access to females. Behavioral observations were made on 38 males. Multiple regressions were run to see how age and ambient conditions affected the behavior of the males. Older males were found to be more aggressive and spend more time in courtship, but it could not be concluded …

Mutations In The Csgd Promoter Associated With Variations In Curli Expression In Certain Strains Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7, Gaylen A. Uhlich, James E. Keen, Robert O. Elder

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Single-base-pair csgD promoter mutations in human outbreak Escherichia coli O157:H7 strains ATCC 43894 and ATCC 43895 coincided with differential Congo red dye binding from curli fiber expression. Red phenotype csgD::lacZ promoter fusions had fourfold-greater expression than white promoter fusions. Cloning the red variant csgDEFG operon into white variants induced the red phenotype. Substrate utilization differed between red and white variants.

Effects Of Sediment Upon Benthic Macroinvertebrates In Forested Northern Appalachian Streams, Michael Douglas Kaller May 2001

Effects Of Sediment Upon Benthic Macroinvertebrates In Forested Northern Appalachian Streams, Michael Douglas Kaller

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Excess fine sediment negatively influences the fauna of North American streams. With the current emphasis on multiple-use forests, the question is not whether fine sediment is detrimental, but what is the threshold of fine sediment that is tolerable?;To determine a threshold tolerance of fine sediment, a two-part project investigated the influence of fine sediment upon benthic macroinvertebrates. The first part encompassed two experiments in sediment manipulation in 1999 and 2000. The experiments tested benthic macroinvertebrate metric sensitivity to a range of fine sediment treatments. The second part involved four seasonal surveys of seven streams to determine the threshold amount of …

Effects Of Type-I Collagen Fractional Composition And Pyridinium Crosslink Content On Cortical Bone Strength In The Human Femur, Michael Blair Rice May 2001

Effects Of Type-I Collagen Fractional Composition And Pyridinium Crosslink Content On Cortical Bone Strength In The Human Femur, Michael Blair Rice

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Type-I collagen's role in the formation of bone and its inherent strength have been well documented by studies in genetic diseases such as Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Type-I collagen's role in healthy bone, and the changes that occur to collagen during aging, which may eventually lead to osteoporosis, is less understood. Changes that may occur include differences in collagen production and in its processing such as differences in glycosylation and the hydroxylation of specific amino acid residues. Changes in the reducible and non-reducible crosslink content, or changes in the ratio of crosslinks to total collagen may also occur. The present study investigated …

Pattern Recognition In Software Engineering Trend Adapting, Dapeng Chen May 2001

Pattern Recognition In Software Engineering Trend Adapting, Dapeng Chen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Whether and when to adapt to certain software engineering trends are difficult questions to be answered by many decision-makers. The main reasons are due to the fact that evolution of software engineering trends itself is determined by various factors, many of which come from the fields outside of the software technology, thus hard to predict. So it is even harder to estimate the cost and benefit when adapting to certain trends. This paper is intended to study ways to decrease the risk involved in such decision making processes, by developing a pattern from past software engineering trends. While the pattern …

The Links Between Functionally Distinct Adult Assemblages Of Sardinops Sagax : Larval Advection Across Management Boundaries, Daniel J. Gaughan, K V. White, Warrick (Rick) J. Fletcher

Fisheries Research Articles

Otolith increment data were used to age larval Sardinops sagax collected from shelf waters between Kangaroo Island in South Australia (SA) and Albany in Western Australia (WA). Distributions of both ages and hatch-dates were compared between six regions across this broad area to examine the hypothesis that larvae arising from spawning sardines in WA may be advected by the Leeuwin Current to the central coast of SA prior to metamorphosis. Current and wind data were analysed to estimate potential rates of passive transport. It appears likely that larvae arising from commercially exploited S. sagax populations in WA can be passively …

Effect Of Music By Mozart And Sounds Claiming To Contain Beta-Frequency Enhancing Audio Signals On Backward Digit Span Recall, Bryan Pickett May 2001

Effect Of Music By Mozart And Sounds Claiming To Contain Beta-Frequency Enhancing Audio Signals On Backward Digit Span Recall, Bryan Pickett

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Neurofeedback is the process of monitoring and manipulating brainwaves. In 1976, Lubar and Shouse used neurofeedback to treat a child with Attention Deficit\ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The most typical method for treating ADHD is to increase beta waves (14+ Hz), which are linked with increased focus and attention and to decrease theta waves ( 4-8 Hz), which are linked to daydreaming states. Recently this principle of increasing focus and attention through increasing beta waves has been used in audio technology that claims to increase beta waves through sound. The idea that sound or music can increase a person's attention, and …

Playboys, Single Girls, And Sexual Rebels: Sexual Politics 1950-1965: A Trilogy Of Significant Developments., Amy Denise Dolinger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the years between 1950 and 1965, three significant developments in American culture left women struggling to merge the housewife archetype of the Cold War era with changing attitudes toward sexuality. Because of these cultural shifts, the developments that dominate the research presented here are; first, the changing elements in the lives of the women who pass through the halls of academia during this time of societal flux; second, the impact of the development of the birth control pill; and third, the impact of the publications of Playboy magazine and Sex and the Single Girl. These developments mark a …

Socioeconomic Status And Media Exposure As Factors In Empathic Development., David E. Cox May 2001

Socioeconomic Status And Media Exposure As Factors In Empathic Development., David E. Cox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study examined the empathic attainment of young children (mean age 7 years) as a function of the child's socioeconomic status. Further, the potential intervening variable of violent media representations within product advertisements is assessed within and between the observed socioeconomic status groups. Three critical dimensions of empathy were assessed: cognitive, affective and behavioral. Participants were 200 volunteers recruited from public and private schools in a small region in southern Appalachia. Respondents were rated on their response to animated video clips depicting an individual in emotional distress. Results suggest that media exposure has significant effect on measures of affective …

Historical Linguistic Analysis Of Traditional English Christmas Carols., Tami Lynn Baker May 2001

Historical Linguistic Analysis Of Traditional English Christmas Carols., Tami Lynn Baker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Through the process of historical linguistics it is possible to determine approximate dates of authorship and meaning that establish the conventions of a particular genre. To accomplish such a study, elements of phonology, morphology, and syntax are compared and the results create a field of descriptors representative of a style of writing of a period.

By using the method on eight well-known Christmas carols, four were determined to have been written prior to the dates previously speculated, possibly originating in the Middle Ages. The remaining four were written based on the conventions set by the earlier medieval carols.
