A thiol/disulfide oxidoreductase component of the GSH system, glutaredoxin (Grx), is involved in the reduction of GSH-based mixed disulfides and participates in a variety of cellular redox pathways. A single cytosolic Grx (Grx1) was previously described in mammals. We now report identification and characterization of a second mammalian Grx, designated Grx2. Grx2 exhibited 36% identity with Grx1 and had a disulfide active center containing the Cys-Ser-Tyr-Cys motif. Grx2 was encoded in the genomes of mammals and birds and expressed in a variety of cell types. The gene for human Grx2 consisted of four exons and three introns, spanned 10 kilobase …

Photovoltaics In Disaster Management, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Man made or natural, disasters can happen at any time, often with little or no advance warning. Major disasters, such as hurricanes, floods, tornados, and earthquakes, can leave many people without adequate medical services, potable water, electrical service and communications. They can be as destructive as Hurricane Mitch leaving several hundred-thousand people homeless or as minor as an afternoon thunderstorm knocking down local power lines to your home.
In response to a disaster, photovoltaic (solar electric) modules offer a source of quiet, safe, pollution-free electrical power. Photovoltaic (PV) power systems are capable of providing the electrical needs for vaccine refrigerators, …

A Dissertation On African American Male Youth Violence: "Trying To Kill The Part Of You That Isn’T Loved", Joy Degruy Leary
A Dissertation On African American Male Youth Violence: "Trying To Kill The Part Of You That Isn’T Loved", Joy Degruy Leary
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation is based on Sociocultural Theory, Social Learning Theory and Trauma Theory, as well as a new theoretical framework (Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome) which takes into account multigenerational trauma. Five research questions involving independent variables believed to predict violent behavior in African American male youth were investigated. The first three questions addressed stressors experienced by African Americans: violence witnessing, violence victimization, and daily urban hassles. The fourth and fifth questions concerned the sociocultural characteristics of racial socialization and prosocial attitudes toward respect. Participants were 200 African American male youth residing in inner Northeast Portland, Oregon who were recruited from …

A Comparison Of Three Rapid Evaluation Procedures For Pine Savanna Wetlands, Cynthia Joan Henderson
A Comparison Of Three Rapid Evaluation Procedures For Pine Savanna Wetlands, Cynthia Joan Henderson
Theses and Dissertations
Inception of the Clean Water Act in 1972 resulted in regulation of activities in wetlands through Section 404. Regulatory agencies like the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) have tried to find methods to rapidly evaluate wetlands. This study compares three rapid evaluation methods, Hydrogeomorphic Approach (HGM), Wetlands Rapid Assessment Procedure (WRAP), and Wetland Evaluation System (WES), based on their scoring of a group of reference and mitigation wetland sites. Repeatability was studied by scoring a group of sites twice. The non-parametric Spearman?s correlation was used to compare the three methods. In this study, HGM was most repeatable followed by …
Watershed Based Analysis Of Fecal Coliform Within The Back Bay Of Biloxi And Its Surrounding Streams, Matthew Edward Renick
Watershed Based Analysis Of Fecal Coliform Within The Back Bay Of Biloxi And Its Surrounding Streams, Matthew Edward Renick
Theses and Dissertations
In the development of the watershed, hydrodynamic, and water quality models for Back Bay of Biloxi in Mississippi, the Better Assessment Science Integrating Point and Nonpoint Sources (BASINS 2.0) - Nonpoint Source Model (NPSM) was selected as the watershed model. The hydrodynamic and water quality models DNYHYD5 and EUTRO5 were selected as the tidally influenced bay models. The watershed model simulated nonpoint source flow and pollutant loadings for all sub-watersheds, routed flow and water quality, and accounted for all major point source discharges in the Back Bay of Biloxi watershed. Time varying output from the watershed model was applied directly …

Managing Feedlot Cattle To Reduce Nutrient Waste, Julie Walker, Brad Johnson
Managing Feedlot Cattle To Reduce Nutrient Waste, Julie Walker, Brad Johnson
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Management opportunities can reduce feed costs and the cost of excess nutrient waste outputs. The key to controlling excess nutrient output is controlling nutrient intakes. The question becomes whether nutrient excretion can be reduced without negatively impacting animal performance?
