Seasonal Reproductive Endocrinology And Anatomy Of Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopia Jubatus), Heather Louise Harmon Aug 2001

Seasonal Reproductive Endocrinology And Anatomy Of Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopia Jubatus), Heather Louise Harmon

Fisheries

The decline of western Alaskan Steller sea lions (SSLs) may be related to changes in reproductive rates. However, our understanding of SSL reproductive biology is poor. My objectives were to determine if saliva samples are a valid alternative to plasma samples for measurements of peripheral progesterone and testosterone, to describe annual cycles of steroid concentrations, and to provide anatomical verification of reproductive endocrinology. Samples were collected from adult, captive and wild SSLs. Progesterone and testosterone concentrations in paired plasma and saliva samples were highly correlated (96% and 84%, respectively). Captive SSLs had seasonal variations in these steroids that did not …

Observations Of Scent-Marking And Discriminating Self From Others By A Domestic Dog (Canis Familiaris): Tales Of Displaced Yellow Snow, Marc Bekoff Aug 2001

Observations Of Scent-Marking And Discriminating Self From Others By A Domestic Dog (Canis Familiaris): Tales Of Displaced Yellow Snow, Marc Bekoff

Ethology Collection

Little is known about what stimuli trigger urinating or scent-marking in domestic dogs, Canis familiaris, or their wild relatives. While it is often suggested that the urine of other animals influences urinating and scent-marking patterns in canids, this has not been verified experimentally. To investigate the role of urine in eliciting urinating and marking, in this pilot study I moved urine-saturated snow (‘yellow snow’) from place-to-place during five winters to compare the responses of an adult male domestic dog, Jethro, to his own and others’ urine. Jethro spent less time sniffing his own urine than that of other males or …

Use Common Sense, Awareness To Reduce Risk Of Shark Attack, Mitchell Diggs

University of Mississippi News

UNIVERSITY, Miss. -- Visitors to Gulf Coast beaches no doubt are thinking a little more about the possibility of encountering a shark following two widely publicized attacks last month, but the chance of becoming a victim remains pretty slim, a University of Mississippi biologist said.

Development Of Kaistsat-4 Expanding The Role Of Small Satellite For Scientific Research , Woo-Kyung Lee, Kyung-In Kang, Hyun-Woo Lee, Kyung-Bin Park, S. Min Park, M.R. Nam, Dong-Jo Park

Small Satellite Conference

The fourth Korean small satellite, KAISTSAT-4, is under development by Satellite Technology Research Center (SaTReC) of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). The KAISTSAT-4 program was commenced on October 1998 with multiple mission objectives, which include exploring space science, deploying satellite-based data collection system and development of precision star sensor. Despite severe constraints on mass and size, these advanced science and engineering payloads are expected to deliver various useful results and exhibit the unique role of small satellite. We present an overview of the KAISTSAT-4 mission and describe its current status. Finally the prospect of future small …

Design And Evaluation Of Processes For Fuel Fabrication, Georg F. Mauer Aug 2001

Design And Evaluation Of Processes For Fuel Fabrication, Georg F. Mauer

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

The objective of this project is the design and evaluation of manufacturing processes for transmuter fuel fabrication. A detailed design description for the manufacturing of each candidate fuel type would support the informed selection of fuel for a transmutation system. We will collect pertinent manufacturing and process-related information and create an information database that will document the design, operations, and cost implications of various fuel choices. Fabrication processes for different fuel types will likely differ in terms of equipment types, throughput, and cost.

Year 1 of the project will be devoted to the analysis and assessment of the multiple steps …

Analysis Of Pesticide Gas Cartridges, John J. Johnston, Carol A. Furcolow, Doreen G. Griffin, Randal S. Stahl, John D. Eisemann Aug 2001

Analysis Of Pesticide Gas Cartridges, John J. Johnston, Carol A. Furcolow, Doreen G. Griffin, Randal S. Stahl, John D. Eisemann

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Charcoal and sodium nitrate, the active ingredients in pesticide gas cartridges, are quantified via carbon analysis and ion chromatography, respectively. Linearity was excellent (R2 > 0.995) over a range consisting of 50-150% of the target concentration for both ingredients. The coefficient of variation for the replicate analyses of gas cartridges over multiple days was <4% for both analytes. Using the results from the analysis of two batches of gas cartridges, theoretical populations were modeled and used to determine practical sampling strategies to support a quality control program for a gas cartridge manufacturing operation. This modeling indicates that the analysis of three cartridges from each of five different lots would produce mean values for both active ingredients that are within 5% of the true mean >99% of the time.

Selenium Metabolism In Drosophila, F. Javier Martin-Romero, Gregory V. Kryukov, Alexei V. Lobanov, Bradley A. Carlson, Byeong Jae Lee, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield Aug 2001

Selenium Metabolism In Drosophila, F. Javier Martin-Romero, Gregory V. Kryukov, Alexei V. Lobanov, Bradley A. Carlson, Byeong Jae Lee, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Selenocysteine is a rare amino acid in protein that is encoded by UGA with the requirement of a downstream mRNA stem-loop structure, the selenocysteine insertion sequence element. To detect selenoproteins in Drosophila, the entire genome was analyzed with a novel program that searches for selenocysteine insertion sequence elements, followed by selenoprotein gene signature analyses. This computational screen and subsequent metabolic labeling with 75Se and characterization of selenoprotein mRNA expression resulted in identification of three selenoproteins: selenophosphate synthetase 2 and novel G-rich and BthD selenoproteins that had no homology to known proteins. To assess a biological role for these …
