Mine Detection Dogs In Central America: An Optimum Technology?, Jaime Perales

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Using mine detection dogs offers many benefits as well as challenges. In the often rough terrain of Central America, dogs can detect mines where machinery is useless, yet climate and disease pose threats to the dogs’ effectiveness and sometimes even their survival.

Onomatopoeia And Language Perception, Joshua Nash Aug 2001

Onomatopoeia And Language Perception, Joshua Nash

Word Ways

"Voon-voon" says the dog in Laos whilst in Romania the same creature says "ham-ham". The question we may ask here is whether dogs in different locals are saying different things or whether we humans perceive what they are saying differently? It seems common sense that a labrador in Asia and Europe will make the same noise completely independent of its surroundings. Why then does an English speaker, who is thinking "woof-woof", laugh on finding out that in Indonesia, humans perceive dogs as making the sound "gong-gong"?

Dual Perms, Rex Gooch

Word Ways

This article responds to the challenge set by Hugo Brandt Corstius in the May 2001 issue of Word Ways. He sought pairs of words that contained the same letters (i.e., permutations of each other), which were dual in the sense that a position occupied a vowel in one was occupied by consonant in the other. This article takes vowel to mean one of A, E, I, O, or U.

A Comparative Study Of Composted Organic Wastes And Ibdu Fertilizer In Nitrogen Utilization By Bentgrass Cultivars, David Mathews Aug 2001

A Comparative Study Of Composted Organic Wastes And Ibdu Fertilizer In Nitrogen Utilization By Bentgrass Cultivars, David Mathews

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This research project that was conducted to provide evidence that composted organic waste materials do provide comparable nitrogen absorption efficiency in relation to an organic slow release fertilizer. Western's compost facility supplied the two different organic wastes, which had been composted for 1 year. The materials used were composted urban leaf litter, sawdust/manure mixture at a 50/50 ratio by volume and an organic fertilizer IBDU. These materials were applied to one cultivars of (Agrostis capillaries) and three cultivars of (A. palustris) at the rate of .S^/IOOO**2 in the months of April, June, and September. The plots were sampled one month …

Assessing The ‘Whole Animal’: A Free Choice Profiling Approach, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Tony E.A. Hunter, Michael T. Mendl, Alistair B. Lawrence Aug 2001

Assessing The ‘Whole Animal’: A Free Choice Profiling Approach, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Tony E.A. Hunter, Michael T. Mendl, Alistair B. Lawrence

Sentience Collection

The qualitative assessment of animal behaviour summarizes the different aspects of an animal’s dynamic style of interaction with the environment, using descriptors such as ‘confident’, ‘nervous’, ‘calm’ or ‘excitable’. Scientists frequently use such terms in studies of animal personality and temperament, but, wary of anthropomorphism, are reluctant to do so in studies of animal welfare. We hypothesize that qualitative behaviour assessment, in describing behaviour as an expressive process, may have a stronger observational foundation than is currently recognized, and may be of use as an integrative welfare assessment tool. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the inter- and intraobserver reliability …

Synaptic Heterogeneity And Stimulus-Induced Modulation Of Depression In Central Synapses, John D. Hunter, John Milton Aug 2001

Synaptic Heterogeneity And Stimulus-Induced Modulation Of Depression In Central Synapses, John D. Hunter, John Milton

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

Short-term plasticity is a pervasive feature of synapses. Synapses exhibit many forms of plasticity operating over a range of time scales. We develop an optimization method that allows rapid characterization of synapses with multiple time scales of facilitation and depression. Investigation of paired neurons that are postsynaptic to the same identified interneuron in the buccal ganglion of Aplysia reveals that the responses of the two neurons differ in the magnitude of synaptic depression. Also, for single neurons, prolonged stimulation of the presynaptic neuron causes stimulus-induced increases in the early phase of synaptic depression. These observations can be described by a …

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

The limestone region of Puerto Rico covers about 27.5 percent of the island's surface and is subdivided into the northern, southern, and dispersed limestone areas. All limestone areas have karst features. The karst belt is that part of the northern limestone with the most spectacular surficial karst landforms. It covers 142,544 ha or 65 percent of the northern limestone. The karst belt is the focus of this publication, although reference is made to all limestone regions. The northern limestone contains Puerto Rico's most extensive freshwater aquifer, largest continuous expanse of mature forest, and largest coastal wetland, estuary, and underground cave …

A Five-Year Management Stategy For Recreational Fishing On The West Coast Of Western Australia, West Coast Recreational Fishing Working Group

Fisheries Management Papers

In its discussion paper (Fisheries Management Paper No. 139), which was widely distributed and publicized, the working group put forward a range of management proposals for community discussion. These were developed after meeting directly with recreational fishers in key regional centres and receiving feedback from fisheries scientists and managers. The discussion paper attracted widespread comment, with more than 1,200 written submissions received from recreational fishers, angling clubs and other stakeholders. The working group would like to thank all those individuals and organisations that took the time to provide this valuable feedback. It was recognised that some of the most pressing …

“Today's Children, Tomorrow's Leaders”: Are We Neglecting The Agents Of Change?, Assegedetch Hailemariam

International Conference on African Development Archives

There is an abundant body of knowledge that suggests that early experience influences later human behavior. This paper reviews and analyzes existing literature to demonstrate that human development, at the individual level, has far reaching consequences on social, economic and political development of a people. For instance, education, one measure of human development, has been inaccessible to more than 50% of school age children in Ethiopia. To effect fundamental changes in Ethiopia, attention and resources must be dedicated to children’s well being and potential. In addition, the paper discusses early psychological processes in human development in contrast to the current …

Soil And Water Resources And Degradation Factors Affecting Their Productivity In The Ethiopian Highland Agro-Ecosystems, Paulos Dubale

International Conference on African Development Archives

Ethiopia has not been able to maintain its economic, political and social development because of internal and external pressures for many years. The natural resource is the worst hit by the slow progress in economic development and this has made matters worse. To get out of the stagnation the present government has adopted a policy called Agricultural Development Led Industrialization taking agriculture as the stepping stone to industrialization.

The soil and water resources of Ethiopia although, still rich, is going through fast degradation processes. Topography, soil types and agro-ecological parameters are playing significant role in the degradation processes influenced by …
