Is Jesus A Hindu? S.C. Vasu And Multiple Madhva Misrepresentations, Deepak Sarma Jan 2000

Is Jesus A Hindu? S.C. Vasu And Multiple Madhva Misrepresentations, Deepak Sarma

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Misperceptions and misrepresentations are frequently linked to complicated dynamics between those who are misperceived and those who do the misperceiving. Oftentimes such dynamics are manifestations of underlying social, political, or, in the cases described in this issue of the Hindu-Christian Studies Bulletin, religious differences. The Hindu and the Christian traditions share a long history of mutual misrepresentations and misperceptions. Many of the authors in this issue of the Bulletin may offer detailed analyses of such misperceptions as they have been described by virtuoso Hindu thinkers such as Ram Mohan Roy, Gandhi-ji, and, in more recent times, BJP activists. In …

Hindu Occidentalism, Tinu Ruparell Jan 2000

Hindu Occidentalism, Tinu Ruparell

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

On a research trip through India one of my goals was to talk to Hindu scholars about their views of Christianity and in particular Hindu-Christian dialogue. Though I visited numerous Universities, Colleges, and maths, I found very few Hindus who took any interest at all in the doctrinal conversation between religions then characteristic of interreligious dialogue. Time and again I was told by these distinguished and erudite academics that they were not interested in Hindu-Christian dialogue. While this may have been due to a failure on my part to ask the right sorts of questions, or simply my bad …

Dorothea Lange In Utah, 1936-1938: A Portrait Of Utah's Great Depression, James R. Swensen Jan 2000

Dorothea Lange In Utah, 1936-1938: A Portrait Of Utah's Great Depression, James R. Swensen

Theses and Dissertations

In his 1978 biography of Dorothea Lange, Milton Meltzer appraised Lange's 1936 photography in Utah as nothing more than mundane work done for the benefit of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and not for her own benefit as a photographer. Yet, her work in Utah encapsulates the aspirations, goals, and styles of Lange, and gives insight into her vision as a photographer and representative of the New Deal. Through carefully composed photographs, Lange shows the hardships and hope of life in Utah during the Great Depression.

This thesis investigates Lange's photographs in order to gain a greater understanding of the …

On Moufang A-Loops, J.D. Phillips Jan 2000

On Moufang A-Loops, J.D. Phillips

Journal Articles

In a series of papers from the 1940’s and 1950’s, R.H. Bruck and L.J. Paige developed a provocative line of research detailing the similarities between two important clases of loops: the diassociative A-loops and the Moufang loops [1]. Though they did not publish any classification theorems, in 1958, Bruck’s colleague, J.M. Osborn, managed to show that diassociative, commutative A-loops are Moufang [5]. In [2] we relaunched this now over 50 year old program by examining conditions under which general–not necessarily commutative–diassociative A-loops are, in fact, Moufang. Here, we finish part of the program by characterizing Moufang A-loops. We also investigate …

Guest Editor's Introduction: Hindu And Christian Mutual Misperceptions, M. Thomas Thangaraj Jan 2000

Guest Editor's Introduction: Hindu And Christian Mutual Misperceptions, M. Thomas Thangaraj

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The "other" remains as a mystery and puzzle before one comes to know the "other" in a personal and intimate manner. especially when the "other" is the "religious" other, it is much more puzzling and mysterious. The history of the encounter between Hindus and Christians over several centuries reveals how the "puzzle" and the "mystery" of the other can at times lead to gross misperceptions of the other. Such mutual misperceptions have been some of the stumbling blocks in the path of a healthy, friendly, and mutually enhancing relation between Christians and Hindus. In this issue of the Bulletin, we …

Reverend William Ward And His Legacy For Christian (Mis)Perception Of Hinduism, Brian K. Pennington Jan 2000

Reverend William Ward And His Legacy For Christian (Mis)Perception Of Hinduism, Brian K. Pennington

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

My assignment for this thematic issue of the Hindu-Christian Studies Bulletin is to address Christian misperceptions of Hinduism, which I shall do by evaluating the work and legacy of William Ward of Serampore, missionary to Bengal, and author on Hinduism in the early nineteenth century. First, however, I would like to make three preliminary observations about the idea of "Christian misperception".

Conversion And The Courts, Ronald Neufeldt Jan 2000

Conversion And The Courts, Ronald Neufeldt

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Conversion from one religion to another has been a thorny issue throughout the history of the Indian subcontinent. Recently the controversy over conversion has received new life, given a number of events which in effect resulted in a great deal of debate over the place of Christians within the State of India. Perhaps the two most recent controversial events were the gruesome murder of Rev. Staines and his two children in orissa and the visit of the Pope to India.
