Two New Localities For Lacerta Sicula Hieroglyphicaberthold, 1842 (Reptilia, Lacertidae), İsmai̇l Hakki Uğurtaş, Hi̇kmet Sami̇ Yildirimhan, Mehmet Öz

In this study, we describe 13 Lacerta sicula hieroglyphica collected from the centre of Bursa and ‚Çakırca, a village about 10 km west of Iznik. The specimens, including their habitat characteristics and distribution, are described. This subspecies is known to live on islands in the Marmara Sea and in Istanbul. This is the first report of L. s. hieroglyphica from Bursa and ‚Çakırca village and therefore its distributional range is being extended to the south of the Marmara Sea.

Herpetofauna Of The Eastern Region Of The Amanos Mountains (Nur), İsmai̇l Hakki Uğurtaş, Hi̇kmet Sami̇ Yildirimhan, Mehmet Öz

In this study, Herpetofauna of the eastern region of t he Amanos mountains in Turkey was investigated. A total of 319 samples were collected and 27 species from 17 amphibian and reptile families were described. Two of these species are urodeles, three are anurans, two are turtles, eleven are lizards and eight are snakes.

In this study, Lake Eymir, Eymir inflow 1, Kışlakçı brook and Eymir outflow were sampled monthly betwen March 1997and April 1998 for physico-chemical and biological parameters. Within the catchment of the lake, there are small-scale industries, sewage effluent of TEK residence and recreational activities causing high concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and total phosphorus (TP) in the eymir inflow 1 and in Kışlakçı brook. In Lake Eymir although diversion of sewage effluent of the Mogan municipality to İmrahor valley appeared to have led to a decrease in TP and DIN concentrations compared with those found in 1994, especially the …

A Review Of Ecological Features Of Fishes Inhabiting Chatkal Biosphere Reserve In Uzbekistan, Ulughbek T. Mirzaev

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This paper provides brief data on the distribution, morphology, biology and way of life of the fishes inhabiting rivers located in Chatkal Biosphere Reserve. The rivers of this reserve are inhabited by cold-loving fishes adapted to mountain conditions. These fishes are characterized by low fecundity, bigger size of eggs and a slower growth. Most of these fishes are small inhabitants of stony-pebble parts of the rivers and are capable of pressing themselves to the bottom and hiding themselves behind stones.

A Preliminary Study On The Ostracoda (Crustacea) Fauna Of Lake Beyşehir, Selçuk Altinsaçli, Mustafa Kiliç, Songül Altinsaçli

The material was collected in July and September 1997 from 15 stations on Lake Beyßehir. A total of 15 species ( Ilyocypris biplicata, Ilyocypris gibba, Ilyocypris bradyi, Candona neglecta, Pseudocandona compressa, Prionocypris zenkeri, Eucypris virens, Heterocypris rotundata, Heterocypris incongruens, Cypria ophtalmica, Physocypria kraepelini, Cypridopsis vidua, Potamocypris zschokkei, Psychrodromus olivaceus, Darwinula stevensoni) belonging to 12 genera were determined. Of these, Heterocyprisrotundatais new addition to the Ostracoda fauna of Turkey.

Elimination Of Essential (Cu, Zn) And Non-Essential (Cd, Pb) Metals From Tissues Of A Freshwater Fish Tilapia Zilli, Mustafa Kalay, Mustafa Canli

Tilapia zilli were exposed to the same concentration (1 mg/L) of essential (Cu, Zn) and non-essential (Cd, Pb) metals for 10 days so that these metals would accumulate in the liver, gill, brain and muscle tissues. Subsequently, the animals were transferred to uncontaminated water for a period of elimination, during which samples were taken at days 1, 7, 15 and 30. Cadmium and lead accumulated in all the tissues and the tissue concentrations increased many times compared to the levels of these metals in the control fish (

Due to its interesting biological aspects, the meadow spittlebug Philaenus spumarius has received great attention from biologists for decades. It has been one of the extensively studied species in ecology and genetics. This homopteran insect shows very high habitat diversity and therefore has a wide global distribution. Adults exhibit a heritable colour/pattern polymorphism on the dorsal surface throughout its range. A similar colour/pattern variation also occurs in certain ventral parts. Effects Of Host Species On Some Biological Characteristics Of Apanteles Galleriae Wilkinson (Hym.; Braconidae), Fevzi̇ Uçkan, Adem Gülel

Koinobiont and solitary, early instar larval endoparasitoid, Apanteles galleriae Wilkinson were reared on two lepidopterous host species, the greater wax moth, Galleriae mellonella (L.) and the small wax moth, Achoria grisella Fabr. under a photoperiod of 12:12 h (D: L) at 25°C and 60 % relative humidity. The parasitoid with three larval instars completed its immature developmental period within 26-28 days when it was reared on G. mellonella and within 25-27 days on A. grisella. The adult parasitoid has no preoviposition period. In the first 24 hours of the adult female life span, 10 to 20 eggs were laid. The …

Remote sensing is used in weather forecasting and global climate studies, natural hazard analysis, crop condition and yield prediction, and forestry applications, for example. In this paper, I analyze and compare the definition of rape in three different legal and sexual cultures: Finland, Pakistan, and Canada. Ultimately, it is an attempt to release the current feminist discourse from the straightjacket of theoretical essentialism. In many ways, this work represents three separate undertakings, which are themselves self- contained and self-defining. The common thread that links them, however, is the way in which the law of rape serves as a site of gender negotiation. Advances in biotechnology over the last decade have created a demand for biological resources by transnational corporations. The search for biological resources has primarily focused on acquiring these resources from indigenous communities and countries of the South. However, the means by which these biological resources are obtained is exploitative and often tantamount to theft (or, as it is commonly known, biopiracy). This paper will proceed in four parts. Part I will consist of a brief summary of current jurisprudence surrounding the doctrine of mens rea, focusing on the debate concerning whether the imposition of criminal liability requires a subjective or objective model of fault. Part II will present the basic epistemological ideals that will form the basis of subsequent analysis. Part III will bring into focus the epistemological elements of the offence of sexual assault. Part IV will demonstrate how a new doctrine of wilful blindness might be employed by the courts, in cases of sexual assault.

This article surveys a very specific legal context: the claims of mothers, who are lesbians, in custody disputes over their children, with their heterosexual ex-spouses, in Canadian courts. The author examines the developments in judgments surrounding custody involving a lesbian mother over the past two and a half decades, focusing on the line of reasoning within the judgments rather than the substantive results (that is, to whom custody is granted). Lucas v. South Carolina Coastal Council is one of several recent Supreme Court decisions in which the Court used the Just Compensation Clause as a "weapon of reaction" to strike down an offending land use restriction. In Lucas, the target of the Court's animus was a state law prohibiting a landowner from developing two beachfront lots. The South Carolina Supreme Court upheld the law as a legitimate exercise of the State's police power to protect the public from harm in the face of a takings challenge by the landowner. In this article, Professor Hunter questions the naturalness and inevitability of the dichotomy in constitutional law between freedom of expression and the right to equality. She places the origin of this doctrinal divergence in the history of American social protest movements in the first half of the twentieth century, which began with ideologically-based claims and shifted to a primary emphasis on identity-based equality claims. Constitutional law has made a mess of the relationship between expression and equality. Much of the time, the two claims exist in sharp conflict, as in recent Supreme Court cases involving hate speech' and the effort by a gay and lesbian group to march in a St. Patrick's Day parade. In those cases, equality claims collided head-on with defenses based on a First Amendment right to express anti-equality values. Allan Hutchinson remarks at the beginning of his interesting article that Gadamer's writings have had only a peripheral influence on legal scholarship -- only occasionally cited, and then begrudgingly so, and never given the serious attention they deserve or require. Nevertheless, Hutchinson acknowledges, Gadamerian influences can be noted -- particularly in the now widely shared understanding that adjudication is, fundamentally, an interpretive exercise. Even with this qualification, though, I think Hutchinson understates Gadamer's impact. Whatever may be true of Gadamer's influence in other disciplines, his influence in law has been unambiguously both broad and deep -- although it has come …
