The rapidly expanding cut foliage industry in the South of Ireland aims to satisfy the demands of an exacting market requiring well furnished quality stems for use in the manufacture of foliage and flower bouquets. The studies examined, in detail, aspects of pruning and nutrition of genera currently important to this evolving industry. Recommendations for the optimum time of pruning Eucalyptus pulverulenta and Pittosporum tenujolium are given. Pruning regimes for Eucalyptus parv,folia and E. glaucescens, Pittosporum tenufolium, Ozothamnus rosmarinfolius ‘Silver Jubilee’ and Rhododendron ponticum were examined and guidelines on best practices are outlined. The possibility of improving the quality of transplants of ornamental foliage species, Eucalyptus perriniana, E. parvifolia and Pittosporum tenuifolium, for supply to the Kerry Foliage Industry was investigated. At present transplants (seedlings) are propagated from seed under glass and subsequently transplanted into the field. Therefore nursery practices for seed propagation, such as optimum sowing date, pot and medium selection, irrigation and fertilisation regimes, were investigated and optimised. The possibility of eliminating the occurrence of J- roots, a major problem with Eucalyptus species was also investigated. Natural autoantibodies (NAA} are autoantibodies that are present in the sera of healthy individuals. NAA can belong to the lgA, lgG and lgM isotypcs. They exhibit high degrees of polyreactivity and connectivity but low affinity to self antigens. The main function of NAA in healthy people is probably 10 clear the catabolic waste and ageing cells. In this study, an indirect Enzyme-linked lmmunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method was used to detect NAA against hormones, namely adreno-co11ical (hydrocortisone, aldostcrone, androstcncdionc), adrcno-medullary (adrenaline. noradrenaline) and other related steroid hormones (progesterone, testosterone, P-cstradiol). We discuss the utility of wavelet transform methods in signal processing in general, and in particular, demonstrate the technique in optoacoustic applications. In several optoacoustic experiments with different samples, we have successfully enhanced the signal to noise ratios. Wavelet transforms optimize resolution by utilizing a tailored, variable time-window in different frequency regions. The technique's great advantage lies in the fact that the wavelet transform adds some redundancy to the original signal, and some desired features can be enhanced in the transformed space. In addition, proper choice of the basis set allows a sparse representation of the signal. Therefore, even when …

Zooplankton and water quality parameters were investigated at eight mesohaline stations in the lower Chesapeake Bay and Elizabeth River from January through December 1994 to identify the changes of zooplankton community structure with increased eutrophication. The total micro- and mesozooplankton biomass decreased with the increase of eutrophication. However, the relative proportion of microzooplankton increased with increased eutrophication. Within highly eutrophied waters, the small oligotrichs (m) and rotifers dominated the total zooplankton biomass (as carbon). However, tintinnids, copepod nauplii and mesozooplankton significantly decreased with the increase of eutrophication. These patterns were consistent throughout the seasons and had significant relationships statistically. These …

Arabica coffee was sampled from two sites in the central highlands of Kenya (Rurima, Ruiru) and one site on the western side of the Rift Valley (Koru). Three species of ceratitidine Tephritidae, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), C. rosa Karsch and Trirhithrum coffeae Bezzi, were reared from sites in the central highlands, and an additional species, C. anonae Graham, was recovered from the western-most site. Ten species of parasitic Hymenoptera were reared from these tephritids. The parasitoid assemblage was dominated by koinobionts. Eight of the species are koinobiont endoparasitoids, but only one idiobiont larval ectoparasitoid was reared, and only one idiobiont pupal …

We have developed a simple and inexpensive experiment using gel filtration chromatography that can be performed in less than 90 minutes. This procedure not only provides students with hands-on experience in both the preparation and use of chromatography columns, but also uses colored molecules to provide dramatic visual confirmation of the process of size-exclusion chromatography. Additionally, the column can be calibrated using molecules of known molecular weights and can then be used to estimate the molecular weights of unknown samples. Our gel filtration experiment costs only a fraction of that of commercially marketed laboratory exercises. A basic understanding of methods …

A number of recent studies suggest that expression of mutant p53 with mutations in certain codons show a gain of function and some of the characteristics of an oncoprotein. In order to study gain of function mutation and eliminate the potential of a dominant negative interaction with endogenous wild type p53 protein, p53 knockout mouse astrocytes were used. A retrovirus system was used to introduce mutant p53 genes into these p53-null astrocytes. Immunohistochemical staining and western blot experiments showed the expression of mutant p53 protein in these cells after infection with the mutant p53 retroviruses. The biochemical and physiologic mechanisms responsible for excisional wound contraction have been extensively studied but are not completely understood. Furthermore, the genes that regulate these processes are unknown. As a result, there are limited treatment options available for patients with diseases or conditions characterized by abnormal tissue contraction. In an attempt to improve our understanding of these mechanisms and identify some of the putative regulatory genes, we studied excisional wound healing in the mid-gestational fetal rabbit. Medical advances in disease management has improved quality of life for women with cystic fibrosis (CF) and now enables them to consider pregnancy. The purpose of the study was to examine women's perceptions of how the demands of having CF influenced their ability to care for their children and continue to meet their own health needs. The Iran-United States Claims Tribunal's recent decision in Sabet and The Islamic Republic of Iran sheds new light on difficult issues concerning the dual nationality of minors. In particular, the case was the first in which the Tribunal determined minor dual national claimants to have a dominant and effective nationality different from that of either of their parents. Further, the Tribunal broke new ground in its analysis of 'the caveat,' an equitable doctrine that can bar the claims of dual nationals. This article applauds the Tribunal's advances in its caveat jurisprudence and develops a new approach that would further those …

The longitudinal and seasonal distribution of macroinvertebrates and the physical and chemical variables of Yuvarlak Stream in the Köycegiz-Dalyan Protected Area in South-Western Turkey were studied between April 1992 and April 1993. The diversity, frequency, dominance, abundance and similarity of macroinvertebrates through the year were recorded. In addition, the Belgian Biotic Index was used as a biological criterion for the assessment of water quality for the first time in Turkey. According to the physico-chemical variables and the distribution of benthic macroinvertebrates, continuous slight and moderate organic pollution exists in the stream. Geographic Variations And Taxonomic Status Of Miniopterus Schreibersi (Kuhl, 1819) In Turkey (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae), İrfan Albayrak, Şule Coşkun

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study is a taxonomical revision of 257 specimens of Miniopterus schreibersi (Kuhl, 1819) collected from Turkey between 1974 and 1994. A total of 30 external and cranial measurements and weights and the ages of the specimens were determined. Diagnostic characters, habitat, and measurements of subspecies were recorded. The specimens collected in Turkey were evaluated by comparison with the nominate form distributed nearby, Miniopterus schreibersi pallidus Thomas, 1907, and synonyms. It was determined that both the nominate form and Miniopterus schreibersi pallidus exist in Turkey.

Lessepsian Fishes Spreading Along The Coasts Of The Mediterranean And The Southern Aegean Sea Of Turkey, Hati̇ce Torcu, Savaş Mater

The taxonomy and biological characters of 22 Lessepsian fishes living on the coasts of the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean Sea were examined and 8 species were determined to have commercial importance. Of these, Upeneus moluccensis and Saurida undosquamis have become economic fishes of the Eastern Mediterranean trawl fisheries, having significant stocks. The species previously misidentified as Upeneus asymmetricus was determined to be Upeneus pori. It has been pointed out that new species can be added to the recorded ones by the consequent influx of Red Sea biota into the Levant.

Aging can be defined as the time-dependent decline of physiological functions of an organism. Aging, a multifactorial process composed of both genetic and environmental components, is a highly complex biologic phenomenon of great importance. The details of the mechanisms leading to aging are not yet known. In this study, which was carried out in July 1998, erythrocyte sizes of Lacerta rudis were examined. The L. rudis specimens were collected from Zigana Pass (Trabzon) at an altitude of 1820 m. Blood smears were prepared at Zigana Pass. Mature erythrocytes (entire cell) and their nuclei lengths and widths were measured by means of an ocular micrometer at a total magnification of 1600x.
