Mariological Memory In The Winter's Tale And Henry Viii, Ruth Vanita Apr 2000

Mariological Memory In The Winter's Tale And Henry Viii, Ruth Vanita

Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications

The Winter’s Tale and Henry VIII are built on a paradox—their women protagonists acquire increased moral authority even while they are being demoted and persecuted. The structure of these plays supports this empowering through a series of spectacles of female fictive kinship. While male kinship, especially patrilineage, is central to the construction of Shakespeare’s histories and tragedies, female fictive lineage is crucial to the vision of these two plays. Henry VIII and The Winter’s Tale visually and verbally construct succession through a series of mutually sympathetic female figures who are not necessarily biologically related: Hermione/ Paulina/Perdita; Katherine/Anne/Elizabeth. Shakespeare draws on …

Differential Expression Of Chemokines In A Mouse Model Of Wound Healing, Susan H. Jackman, Matthew B. Yoak, Shivaleela Keerthy, Bonnie L. Beaver

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Macrophages have a multifaceted role in wound healing. While their initial activity may be in the degradation and elimination of damaged tissue, macrophages also produce and secrete a variety of mediators that can participate in the repair process as well. To perform these functions, macrophages must be recruited to a wound site. Our purpose was to examine the temporal and spatial expression of macrophage chemoattracting cytokines (chemokines) at a surgical wound site. A surgical wound was prepared on the dorsal aspect of B6AFI/J mice. Biopsies were obtained from the wound and a comparable nonwounded area between 6 and 72 hr …

Dietary Fish Oil Sensitizes A549 Lung Xenografts To Doxorubicin Chemotherapy, W. Elaine Hardman, Mary Pat Moyer, Ivan L. Cameron Apr 2000

Dietary Fish Oil Sensitizes A549 Lung Xenografts To Doxorubicin Chemotherapy, W. Elaine Hardman, Mary Pat Moyer, Ivan L. Cameron

Biochemistry and Microbiology

A549 xenografts were allowed to grow in nude mice to about 5 mm in diameter, then diets were changed to modified AIN-76 diets containing 19% wt/wt. fish oil (FO) or 20% wt./wt. com oil (CO). Ten days later dietary ferric citrate (0.3% wt./dry wt.) was added and doxoribicin (DOX) treatment (3.6 mg/kg i.v. each of the 5 days for 18 days) commenced. Treatment with DOX halted the growth of tumors in the CO fed mice. However, in those mice, which consumed FO or FO with ferric citrate, treatment with DOX caused significant tumor regression.

Juvenile Hormone Titer And Morph-Specific Reproduction In The Wing-Polymorphic Cricket, Gryllus Firmus, Gretchen Cisper, Anthony J. Zera, David W. Borst

Anthony Zera Publications

Juvenile hormone titers and reproductive characteristics were measured in adult wing and flight-muscle morphs of the wing-polymorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus, during the first week of adulthood. This species has three morphs: one flight capable morph with fully-developed wings and fully-developed flight muscles [LW(F)], one flightless morph with fully-developed wings and histolyzed (non-functional) flight muscles [LW(H)], and another flightless morph with underdeveloped (short) wings and underdeveloped flight muscles (SW). Both flightless morphs [LW(H) and SW] had larger ovaries which contained a greater number of postvitellogenic eggs compared with the flight capable [LW(F)] morph. The juvenile hormone titer was significantly higher …

Papers in Biotechnology

Recent devclopments in recombinant DNA technology have enabled the synthesis of valuable therapeutic proteins in bacterial cells as well as in novel eucaryotic expression systems. However, the purification of proteins of interest from either the conventional sources, cell culture, or novel routes in a highly purified form necessitates the development of separation tcchniques capable of recovering proteins from these feed streams in a highly purified form (1,2). Purification of therapeutic proteins from biological sources is usually complicated by the presence of endogenous proteins (2). Purification methodologies based on ion exchange or adsorption serve as excellent prepurification steps, but they fail …

Enjoy The Donut: A Regulatory Response To The White Paper On Preventing Invasion Of The Great Lakes By Exotic Species, Sandi Zellmer Apr 2000

Enjoy The Donut: A Regulatory Response To The White Paper On Preventing Invasion Of The Great Lakes By Exotic Species, Sandi Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

The adverse economic and environmental consequences associated with the invasion and establishment of exotic species have raised significant concerns among the Great Lakes community. In September 1999, the International Joint Commission (IJC) hosted a workshop on exotic policy, drawing upon the expertise of biologists, lawyers and public officials, to consider means of preventing exotic species invasions. The White Paper on Policies for the Prevention of the Invasion of the Great Lakes by Exotic Organisms served as the centerpiece for discussion at the workshop.

The White Paper concludes that economic initiatives, such as subsidies or taxation, would be the most viable …

Perceptions Of Administrators, Counselors, Teachers, And Students Concerning School Safety And Violence In Selected Secondary Schools In North Louisiana, Sharilynn Duckworth-Loche

Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purposes of this study were to determine the perceptions of administrators, counselors, teachers, and students, regarding levels of school safety and violence in selected secondary schools in north Louisiana; the types of violence that had the greatest impact on safety; and strategies that were currently being used to address violence in the schools. The secondary purpose was to determine the differences in perceptions of school safety and violence of administrators, counselors, and teachers by ethnic background, gender and years of experience. A tertiary purpose was to determine the perceptions of students by ethnic background, gender, age, and grade …

Comparison Of Larval Myomere Counts Among Species Of Nocomis In Virginia (Actinopterygii: Cyprinidae), Terre D. Green, Eugene G. Maurakis

Virginia Journal of Science

Larval myomere counts of Nocomis platyrhynchus were made using a dissecting light microscope equipped with polarizing filters, and then compared to those of the three other species of Nocomis (Nocomis leptocephalus, Nocomis micropogon, and Nocomis raneyi) found in Virginia. Average preanal myomere counts for N. platyrhynchus (26.9) were significantly different from those of the other three species (N. raneyi =28.7; N. micropogon =26.0; and N. leptocephalus =25.9). This is especially important as larvae of N. leptocephalus, the only other species of Nocomis syntopic with N. platyrhynchus in the upper New River drainage, can now …

The Role Of The Internet Entrepreneur In The Information Economy, Neal Hauser Apr 2000

The Role Of The Internet Entrepreneur In The Information Economy, Neal Hauser

Theses and Graduate Projects

The information economy and the Internet entrepreneur are two significant developments of the late 20th century. This theoretical study seeks to understand the connection between the two phenomena. From a perspective of leadership it is critical to understand the relationship between individual actors and a system, and the implications of their interaction on the world. The research question asks whether Internet entrepreneurs are active creators of the information economy, or are they a creation of the information economy?

Central to answering the research question are the theoretical concepts of active and passive human agency. Active human agency proposes that the …
