Wastewater Management Using Hybrid Poplar, Gary A. Kuhn Apr 2000

Wastewater Management Using Hybrid Poplar, Gary A. Kuhn

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

Hybrid poplars are rapidly growing trees that are well suited to use agricultural, industrial, and community wastewater. They are being used as an alternative to expensive wastewater treatment systems, and methods which apply wastewater to annual crops or pasture. The trees serve a dual purpose as a nutrient sink for wastewater use and as a means to produce a short-rotation harvested wood product which helps offset the cost of installation and maintenance.

Planning tree wastewater use systems requires both agroforestry and engineering expertise. Omission of either in the planning process can lead to disappointing results and reduced benefits. This Agroforestry …

Waterbreaks: Managed Trees For The Floodplain, Douglas C. Wallace, Wayne A. Geyer, John P. Dwyer Apr 2000

Waterbreaks: Managed Trees For The Floodplain, Douglas C. Wallace, Wayne A. Geyer, John P. Dwyer

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

Historically, many of the natural woody ecosystems that were once present in floodplains across the country have been highly altered or removed. Land clearing has resulted in the loss of woody vegetation, even in areas adjacent to streams and rivers. With these alterations, came extensive flood management commitments to compensate for the loss of naturally functioning floodplains and for the protection of towns, roads, and agricultural fields. However, even with the best available flood management techniques, when rivers decide to flood - they will, often with devastating consequences. Strictly from a social and an economic standpoint, allowing the floodplain to …

The True Truth About Kgi And The Field Station, Paul Faulstich Apr 2000

The True Truth About Kgi And The Field Station, Paul Faulstich

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

There are multiple truths. One is the true truth. This truth remains the same no matter what anyone thinks or says about it. For example, it is true truth that we need oxygen. and that trees provide it. No matter what we think or say about it, this is the way it is. And, the Bernard Biological Field Station is habitat to threatened and endangered plants and animals. This, too, we know to be true.

Factors Influencing Choice Of Business Strategies By Government Research Laboratories Under Pressure To Increase External Earnings: An Exploratory Study, Rishikesha T Krishnan Apr 2000

Factors Influencing Choice Of Business Strategies By Government Research Laboratories Under Pressure To Increase External Earnings: An Exploratory Study, Rishikesha T Krishnan

Working Papers

Concerned by the seeming lack of accountability of government research laboratories, governments the world over have adopted fiscal control measures to make them more business-like and responsive to user needs. These have typically consisted of expecting them to generate a portion of their revenues from actual users of their services. In this study we examined the strategies adopted by five government research laboratories in India in response to a policy directive that they should generate at least one third of their budget from external sources, particularly industry. The performance of these laboratories, functioning under the aegis of the Council of …

Predicting Vintage Quantity And Quality In Coastal California Using Pacific Sea Surface Temperatures, Ramakrishna R. Nemani, Michael A. White, Daniel R. Cayan, Gregory V. Jones, Steven W. Running

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

California produces 90% of all wine within the U.S. and dominates the $33 billion/year domestic retail wine industry. Since the 1950s, wine grape growers in California have seen dramatic increases in premium wine quality, grape yield, and crop value. Advances in viticultural practices (irrigation, nutrition, pest/disease control, trellising etc.) and experience in wine making have certainly contributed to the success (Jackson and Lombard 1993). In spite of such advances, wine growers generally believe climate plays a significant role in determining the quantity and quality of a given vintage.

Disruption Of The Borrelia Burgdorferi Gac Gene, Encoding The Naturally Synthesized Gyra C-Terminal Domain, Scott W. Knight, Betsy J. Kimmel, Christian H. Eggers, D. Scott Samuels Apr 2000

Disruption Of The Borrelia Burgdorferi Gac Gene, Encoding The Naturally Synthesized Gyra C-Terminal Domain, Scott W. Knight, Betsy J. Kimmel, Christian H. Eggers, D. Scott Samuels

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The C-terminal domain of the A subunit of DNA gyrase, which we term Gac, is naturally synthesized in Borrelia burgdorferi as an abundant DNA-binding protein. Full-length GyrA, which includes the C-terminal domain, is also synthesized by the spirochete and functions as a subunit of DNA gyrase, We have disrupted synthesis of Gac as an independent protein and demonstrated that it is not essential for growth in a coumarin-resistant background. We detected no alterations in DNA maintenance, condensation, or topology In B. burgdorferi lacking this small DNA-binding protein.
