Binding Of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus Rev To An Exon Splicing Enhancer Mediates Alternative Splicing And Nuclear Export Of Viral Mrnas, Michael Belshan, Gregory S. Park, Patricia Bilodeau, C. Martin Stoltzfus, Susan Carpenter May 2000

Binding Of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus Rev To An Exon Splicing Enhancer Mediates Alternative Splicing And Nuclear Export Of Viral Mrnas, Michael Belshan, Gregory S. Park, Patricia Bilodeau, C. Martin Stoltzfus, Susan Carpenter

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

In addition to facilitating the nuclear export of incompletely spliced viral mRNAs, equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) Rev regulates alternative splicing of the third exon of the tat/rev mRNA. In the presence of Rev, this exon of the bicistronic RNA is skipped in a fraction of the spliced mRNAs. In this report, the cis-acting requirements for exon 3 usage were correlated with sequences necessary for Rev binding and transport of incompletely spliced RNA. The presence of a purine-rich exon splicing enhancer (ESE) was required for exon 3 recognition, and the addition of Rev inhibited exon 3 splicing. Glutathione-S-transferase (GST)-Rev bound …

A Survey Of The Macroscopic Fungi Of The Lula Lake Land Trust, Jocelyn M. De Guzman May 2000

A Survey Of The Macroscopic Fungi Of The Lula Lake Land Trust, Jocelyn M. De Guzman

Honors Theses

I conducted a survey of the macroscopic fungi in an area designated as Chestnut Orchard #1 of the Lula Lake Land Trust from May 29, 1999 to March 8, 2000. The purpose of the survey centered on making a comprehensive list of the fleshy fungi to serve as baseline data of the fungal diversity contained on this experimental chestnut plot. The fieldwork resulted in a collection of 139 sporocarp specimens, comprising 17 families, 38 genera, 63 species and, as of yet, approximately 30 unidentified specimens. Some of the specimens collected were also determined to be edible, thus offering a possible …

Phytoremediation Of A Pyrene-Contaminated Cecil Soil With Annual Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum Lam.), Teddy Luc Lalande May 2000

Phytoremediation Of A Pyrene-Contaminated Cecil Soil With Annual Ryegrass (Lolium Multiflorum Lam.), Teddy Luc Lalande

All Theses

Phytoremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is inconsistent and the microbial mechanisms involved are unclear. We evaluated the effect of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and P availability on the degradation of pyrene (600mg kg-1 dry soil) in the top 7.5-cm of a Cecil sandy loam (fine, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Kanhapludults) over a 10-month experiment under field conditions in Clemson, SC. Changes associated with the soil microbial community were also evaluated. Plastic canopies were installed to prevent leaching and raindrop dispersion of pyrene. Treatment factors were pyrene, vegetation, and available P levels in a complete factorial experiment with four replications. …

Virulence Of Cryphonectria Hypoviruses From Previous Release Sites, Paul Henry Chaloux May 2000

Virulence Of Cryphonectria Hypoviruses From Previous Release Sites, Paul Henry Chaloux

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 1994 and 1995, Cryphonectria parasitica isolates singly or doubly infected with hypoviruses in the CHV3 genus, and lacking distinctive morphological abnormalities, were recovered near plots formerly used to release hypoviruses. This study tested the hypothesis that North American hypoviruses are evolving decreased virulence, and investigated hypovirus interactions affecting virulence in double-infections. Families of single conidial progeny (SCP), differing in infection status, and derived from six recovered, three release, and three comparison isolates were tested in three field experiments. All release isolates and four recovered isolates were debilitated by their CHV3-gh2-type hypoviruses. CHV3-sr2-type hypoviruses never caused debilitation. In family SG3-2 …

Zen And The Art Of Jursiprudence, Matthew K. Roskoski May 2000

Zen And The Art Of Jursiprudence, Matthew K. Roskoski

Michigan Law Review

Lawyer bashing is by no means a remarkable phenomenon. It was not remarkable when Shakespeare wrote, "[t]he first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers," and it's not remarkable today. Paul Campos, however, has written a particularly readable example, blending venerable Western lawyer-bashing and pop psychology with unsystematic invocations of Eastern religion. Jurismania is named after Campos's theory that the American legal system has a lot in common with a person suffering from an obsessive-compulsive disorder, an addiction to law that does neither the patient nor those around him much good. In Jurismania, Campos criticizes our insistence on regulating …

The Tyranny Of Money, Edward J. Mccaffery May 2000

The Tyranny Of Money, Edward J. Mccaffery

Michigan Law Review

The more things change, the more they stay the same. A human activity almost as venerable as the accumulation and opulent display of vast riches is the condemnation of the accumulation and opulent display of vast riches. People have been busily engaged at each for several millennia now. Both continue in full flower as America races into the twenty-first century with its liberal capitalist democracy ascendant around the world, its rich richer than ever, its less-rich curiously lagging behind. Yet figuring out what, exactly, is wrong with the excessive accumulation and opulent display of wealth, on the one hand, and …

Simulated Performance Of Conventional High-Temperature Drying, Dryeration, And Combination Drying Of Shelled Corn With Automatic Conditioning, Michael D. Montross, Dirk E. Maier May 2000

Simulated Performance Of Conventional High-Temperature Drying, Dryeration, And Combination Drying Of Shelled Corn With Automatic Conditioning, Michael D. Montross, Dirk E. Maier

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Combination drying, based on computer simulation, was evaluated as an alternative drying technique to traditional high-temperature drying and dryeration. Simulation models of high-temperature crossflow drying and in-bin drying and conditioning were used to evaluate the performance of conventional crossflow drying and full-heat crossflow drying followed by dryeration or natural-air drying for Indianapolis, Indiana, and Des Moines, Iowa. Energy costs from propane, electricity, moisture shrink below the market moisture content, and dry matter loss were estimated to find the total average drying cost over 29 years. Dryeration and combination drying reduced the total drying cost by approximately 10% compared to conventional …

Subsisting On Non-Livable Wages: Women In Pittsburgh's Public Housing, Laurel Jeanne Person May 2000

Subsisting On Non-Livable Wages: Women In Pittsburgh's Public Housing, Laurel Jeanne Person

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

With the largest per capita public housing stock in the United States, Pittsburgh has been wrestling with policy reforms throughout the 1990s. The federal Hope VI program was instituted by the Clinton administration in an effort to revamp the nation’s public housing system. Though the program’s intentions are admirable, the results in Pittsburgh have been injurious. Long-term residents have lost the only place they knew as home, families stay in shelters until appropriate units become available, and Hope VI diverts funds from restoration projects to meet the Housing Authority’s political agenda. Given this volatile situation in the “Iron City”, I …

Anomalous Shape Recognition Using Computer Vision, Chang-Sik Kim May 2000

Anomalous Shape Recognition Using Computer Vision, Chang-Sik Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this research, a new method for anomalous shape recognition, named Curvature-Angular Descriptor (CAD), was written. The CAD generates shape feature vectors from a given curve shape. These vectors can be used to uniquely characterize the shape.

The sweet potato has one of the most irregular shapes of any fruit or vegetable. The Standards for Grades of sweet potato shapes (The Code of Federal Regulation, title 7 Agriculture, 1995) are very subjective. For this reason, the sweet potato was chosen as an anomalous shape for evaluating the CAD. The CAD was applied using two methods for sweet potato shape recognition. …

The Wto Panel Decision On Australia's Salmon Import Guidelines: Evidence That The Sps Agreement Can Effectively Protect Human Health Interests, Matthew D. Taylor May 2000

The Wto Panel Decision On Australia's Salmon Import Guidelines: Evidence That The Sps Agreement Can Effectively Protect Human Health Interests, Matthew D. Taylor

Washington International Law Journal

On July 19, 1999, Australia lifted its ban on salmon imports and announced new salmon import guidelines. The new guidelines were promulgated in response to a World Trade Organization ("WTO") Appellate Body determination that the import ban violated the Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures ("SPS Agreement"). Canada challenged Australia's new import guidelines, alleging that the new guidelines also violate the SPS Agreement. The WTO dispute settlement panel held that, with the exception of only one provision, Australia's new salmon import guidelines are based on appropriate scientific risk analyses and are now in line with comparable import …

Rhodium A Potential Chemical Modifier For The Determination Of Lead Using Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometric (Gfaas) Techniques, Prima Tatum

Theses (Pre-2016)

There are several ways to determine trace amounts of lead in biological samples. The use of matrix modifiers and auxiliary modifiers along with the Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometric technique is one of the ways to measure the levels of lead in blood and urine. This study is directed towards the use of rhodium as a matrix modifiers for the determination of lead using Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption (GFAAS) technique. At a constant atomization temperatures, the ashing temperature has an effect on the lead absorbance signal. The effect modifiers and an auxiliary modifier on the analysis of lead in blood …

Punishment And Preventing Pollution In Japan: Is American-Style Criminal Enforcement The Solution?, Robert G. Kondrat May 2000

Punishment And Preventing Pollution In Japan: Is American-Style Criminal Enforcement The Solution?, Robert G. Kondrat

Washington International Law Journal

Both Japan and the United States face the ongoing threat of intentional and preventable pollution. From 1970 until the mid-1980s, Japan utilized its environmental crime laws to punish and prevent intentional and preventable acts of pollution. After this period, however, the number of environmental crime arrests and prosecutions in Japan declined. In contrast, since the 1980s, the United States has continued to expand the number of prosecutors and investigators dedicated to the enforcement of environmental crime laws. These divergent trends can be explained by the different pollution histories, enforcement personnel structures, regulatory strategies, and case law of the two countries. …

Invertebrate Carcasses As A Resource For Competing Aedes Albopictus And Aedes Aegypti (Diptera : Culicidae), M P. Daugherty, B W. Alto, Steven A. Juliano

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

However, little is known of the role of these carcasses in other containers, which also receive leaf fall and stemflow inputs. This experiment investigated effects of accumulated invertebrate carcasses as a resource for two competing mosquitoes, Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and Aedes aegypti (L.) whether either species differentially benefited from accumulated carcasses, and if such a benefit affected interspecific competition. First, we measured accumulation of invertebrate carcasses in standard containers at a field site. We then used a replacement series with five different species ratios at the same total density: and varied the input of invertebrate carcasses [dead Drosophila melanogaster (Meigen) …

Effect Of Land In Commons On The Decision-Making Behavior Of The Pastoralists In The Central Rangelands Of Somalia, Abdinasir Mohamed Abdulle May 2000

Effect Of Land In Commons On The Decision-Making Behavior Of The Pastoralists In The Central Rangelands Of Somalia, Abdinasir Mohamed Abdulle

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Degradations of the rangelands is very common around the permanent settlements of the central rangelands of Somalia. This degradation is attributed to overstocking resulting form the fact that the rangelands are communally owned and herders are ignoring the shadow value of the forage. Information about the optimal herd size would help halt the rangeland degradation.

In this study, two allocation mechanisms were compared. The first was the private ownership solution where someone owns the rangeland and decides how many animals should be grazed there. The second was the solution where the rangeland is owned in common by the dwellers of …
