Wisdom In The Inward Parts, Alan L. Gillen, Inis Bardella May 2000

Wisdom In The Inward Parts, Alan L. Gillen, Inis Bardella

Faculty Publications and Presentations

We wrote The Human Body: An Intelligent Design (Gillen et al. 1999) to help readers understand physiological principles in the human body from a creation perspective. The majority of biology and physiology textbooks bring an evolutionary perspective. Very few books and articles discuss a creation perspective on human anatomy and physiology.

I (ALG) have now written a second book (Gillen, 2000) entitled Body by Design: The Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body, that emphasizes historical and anatomical evidences for a creationbased science of the human body. Both books have been written to fill this gap in the literature on …

The Teenage Inventory Of Social Skills: A Validation Study, Joshua Myers May 2000

The Teenage Inventory Of Social Skills: A Validation Study, Joshua Myers

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The development and maintenance of adolescent peer relationships has been recognized by researchers as important for healthy current and future psycho-social adjustment. Furthermore, adolescent friendships are developmentally unique and qualitatively different than childhood friendships. The present study examines the validity, reliability and clinical utility of the Teenage Inventory of Social Skills (TISS), a self-report measure of adolescent social/friendship skills. Self-report and teacher/adult ratings on the TISS were compared for 64 participants from a court-ordered, residential treatment program and 51 adolescent participants from a public school-based youth group. While overall results confirmed the clinical utility and psychometric superiority of the TISS, …

Vernacular Letterforms: An Expression Of Cultural And Social Values, Georgiana Leite

Theses

This thesis investigates similar problem-solving processes used in the fields of graphic design and engineering, revealing an underlying relationship between the two disciplines. It shows the principles these two disciplines share and how they employ a common creative process. By comparing these two vastly different disciplines, an understanding of the methodology of thought is constructed.

Molecular Evolution Of Odorant-Binding Protein Genes Os-E And Os-F In Drosophila, Daria S. Hekmat-Scafe, Robert L. Dorit, John R. Carlson May 2000

Molecular Evolution Of Odorant-Binding Protein Genes Os-E And Os-F In Drosophila, Daria S. Hekmat-Scafe, Robert L. Dorit, John R. Carlson

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Drosophila olfactory genes OS-E and OS-F are members of a family of genes that encode insect odorant-binding proteins (OBPs). OBPs are believed to transport hydrophobic odorants through the aqueous fluid within olfactory sensilla to the underlying receptor proteins. The recent discovery of a large family of olfactory receptor genes in Drosophila raises new questions about the function, diversity, regulation, and evolution of the OBP family. We have investigated the OS-E and OS-F genes in a variety of Drosophila species. These studies highlight potential regions of functional significance in the OS-E and OS-F proteins, which may include a region required …

Low Seasonal Temperatures Promote Life Cycle Synchronization, Janette Lee Jenkins May 2000

Low Seasonal Temperatures Promote Life Cycle Synchronization, Janette Lee Jenkins

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In this paper, we discuss how seasonal temperature variation and dormancy can synchronize the development of exothermic organisms. Using a simple aging model, it is shown that minimal seasonal temperature variation and periods of dormancy during extreme temperature conditions are sufficient to establish stable, univoltine ovipositional cycles. Dormancy, in fact, promotes synchronous oviposition emergence. The mountain pine beetle, an important insect living in extreme temperature conditions and showing no evidence of diapause, invites direct application of this model. Simulations using mountain pine beetle parameters are used to determine temperature regimes for which stable, ovipositional cycles exist.

A Drosophila Esc-E(Z) Protein Complex Is Distinct From Other Polycomb Group Complexes And Contains Covalently Modified Esc, Joyce Ng, Craig M. Hart, Kelly Morgan, Jeffrey A. Simon

Faculty Publications

The extra sex combs (ESC) and Enhancer of zeste [E(Z)] proteins, members of the Polycomb group (PcG) of transcriptional repressors, interact directly and are coassociated in fly embryos. We report that these two proteins are components of a 600-kDa complex in embryos. Using gel filtration and affinity chromatography, we show that this complex is biochemically distinct from previously described complexes containing the PcG proteins Polyhomeotic, Polycomb, and Sex comb on midleg. In addition, we present evidence that ESC is phosphorylated in vivo and that this modified ESC is preferentially associated in the complex with E(Z). Modified ESC accumulates between 2 …

Human Health Risk Assessment: Recreational Use Of A Brownfield Site Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant Chemical Farmers Industries, Inc., Lease Area Chattanooga, Tennessee, Sandra Gail Skipper Koss

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis investigates the suitability of a lead-contaminated Brownfield, the Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant (VAAP) site in Chattanooga, for recreational use such as children's softball. The assessment includes a review of soil sample data obtained at the VAAP by IT Corporation from 1994 to 1999, particulate monitoring of softball activities at Warner Park by the author in 1999-2000, and determination of the fate and transport of lead contamination in the soil. The fate and transport were evaluated using EPA's Integrated Exposure Uptake Biokinetic (IEUBK) model for children under 7 years of age. The adult effects were calculated using an EPA …

Monitoring Precursor 16s Rrnas Of Acinetobacter Spp. In Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment Systems, Daniel B. Oerther, Jakob Pernthaler, Andreas Schramm, Rudolf Amann, Lutgarde M. Raskin

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently, Cangelosi and Brabant used oligonucleotide probes targeting the precursor 16S rRNA of Escherichia coli to demonstrate that the levels of precursor rRNA were more sensitive to changes in growth phase than the levels of total rRNA (G. A. Cangelosi and W. H. Brabant, J. Bacteriol. 179:4457- 4463, 1997). In order to measure changes in the levels of precursor rRNA in activated sludge systems, we designed oligonucleotide probes targeting the 3' region of the precursor 16S rRNA of Acinetobacter spp. We used these probes to monitor changes in the level of precursor 16S rRNA during batch growth of Acinetobacter spp. …

N-3 Essential Fatty Acids Intake And Depressive Symptoms, Nami Matsumura

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine whether N-3 fatty acids intake would correlate with a prevalence of mental distresses. The present study consisted of a comprehensive literature review and analysis of preexisting data that were relevant to this study. Two data were primarily used in the assessment. These were the 1994 study of Media and Markets by Simmons Market Research Bureau, Inc. for food intakes, and the report of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) for the prevalence of Frequent Mental Distress. Due to incompatibility of those two studies additional data- the U.S. population estimates for regions …

An Ulstrastructural Study Of Acetabularia Acetabulum, Rachel Vangilder May 2000

An Ulstrastructural Study Of Acetabularia Acetabulum, Rachel Vangilder

Master's Theses

Calcification within the cell and the cell wall Acetabularia acetabulum, a large single cell alga, is examined through an ultrastructural investigation, electron diffraction, and an elemental analysis. These methods suggest that amorphous calcium carbonate is located adjacent to and within the cell wall. The location of the crystals within and directly outside the cell wall suggests the calcium is obtained from the surrounding environment. Fibrillar structures are seen through SEM in areas where calcification is occurring. This fibrillar material appears to serve as the organic matrix where calcification initiates. Intracellularly electron dense materials is seen in the chloroplasts. This …

Integrated Temporal Regulation Of The Photorespiratory Pathway. Circadian Regulation Of Two Arabidopsis Genes Encoding Serine Hydroxymethyltransferase, C Robertson Mcclung, Meier Hsu, Janet E. Painter, Jennifer M. Gagne, Sharon D. Karlsberg, Patrice A. Salome May 2000

Integrated Temporal Regulation Of The Photorespiratory Pathway. Circadian Regulation Of Two Arabidopsis Genes Encoding Serine Hydroxymethyltransferase, C Robertson Mcclung, Meier Hsu, Janet E. Painter, Jennifer M. Gagne, Sharon D. Karlsberg, Patrice A. Salome

Dartmouth Scholarship

The photorespiratory pathway is comprised of enzymes localized within three distinct cellular compartments: chloroplasts, peroxisomes, and mitochondria. Photorespiratory enzymes are encoded by nuclear genes, translated in the cytosol, and targeted into these distinct subcellular compartments. One likely means by which to regulate the expression of the genes encoding photorespiratory enzymes is coordinated temporal control. We have previously shown in Arabidopsis that a circadian clock regulates the expression of the nuclear genes encoding both chloroplastic (Rubisco small subunit and Rubisco activase) and peroxisomal (catalase) components of the photorespiratory pathway. To determine whether a circadian clock also regulates the expression of genes …

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Human neutrophil defensins, and their analogues incorporating anionic, hydrophobic or cationic residues at the N- and C-termini, were synthesized by solid-phase procedures. The synthetic defensins were examined for their microbicidal activity against Candida albicans, two Gram-negative bacteria (Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis) and two Gram-positive bacteria (Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus mutans). The human neutrophil peptide 1 (HNP1) and HNP2 were found to be potent candidacidal agents. HNP3, which differs by one amino acid at the N-terminus of its sequence, was totally inactive. The Gram-negative bacteria A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis and the Gram-positive bacteria S. gordonii and S. mutans were …
