The Effect Of A Student Assessment Instrument In The Performance Of Basic Skills Mathematics Students At The Community College Level, Matthew Flacche May 2000

The Effect Of A Student Assessment Instrument In The Performance Of Basic Skills Mathematics Students At The Community College Level, Matthew Flacche

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to see if implementation of a self-assessing instrument improved students' test scores when compared to no mid-unit assessment at all. The experiment involved basic skills mathematics students from Camden County College in Blackwood, New Jersey. Two Math Skills III (Elementary Algebra) classes, containing a total of 39 students, were included in the study. Both sections of students completed pretests. The students in both classes received similar instruction, however one class (the treatment group) received three weeks of instruction, completed and graded Student Assessment Instruments (SAI's) approximately every other class (during the instruction), and took a unit …

The Pla And The Kosovo Conflict, June Teufel-Dreyer Dr. May 2000

The Pla And The Kosovo Conflict, June Teufel-Dreyer Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The U.S. armed forces are not the only military that has sought to discern the lessons of the Kosovo campaign in the spring of 1999. The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has also analyzed the conflict and drawn its own conclusions. In fact, as Dr. June Teufel Dreyer, Professor of Political Science at the University of Miami in Florida, observes, rather than reach a single set of conclusions, different groups within the Chinese military drew different judgments. Dr. Dreyer argues that these differences of opinion reflect the considerable diversity of thinking about defense modernization and future war that exists within …

Pooled And Individual Bycatch Quotas: Exploring Tradeoffs Between Observer Coverage Levels, Bycatch Frequency, Pool Size, And The Precision Of Bycatch Estimates, Landon S. Jensen May 2000

Pooled And Individual Bycatch Quotas: Exploring Tradeoffs Between Observer Coverage Levels, Bycatch Frequency, Pool Size, And The Precision Of Bycatch Estimates, Landon S. Jensen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The North Pacific Ocean is highly productive, hosting many of the world's largest groundfish populations and supporting a thriving fishing industry. Numerous regulations have been implemented to control the incidental take of non-target bycatch. Individual and Pooled Bycatch Quotas have recently been proposed as instruments that could further encourage the avoidance of such bycatch and increase enforceability of bycatch caps at less-than-entire-fishery levels of operation. The recent advent of fishing cooperatives such as the Pacific Whiting Conservation Cooperative and the Pollock Conservation Cooperatives create an additional impetus for examining the characteristics of pool and vessel specific bycatch quotas.

Biology Faculty Articles

Factors accounting for long-term nonprogression may include infection with an attenuated strain of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), genetic polymorphisms in the host, and virus-specific immune responses. In this study, we examined eight individuals with nonprogressing or slowly progressing HIV-1 infection, none of whom were homozygous for host-specific polymorphisms (CCR5-Δ32, CCR2-64I, and SDF-1-3'A) which have been associated with slower disease progression. HIV-1 was recovered from seven of the eight, and recovered virus was used for sequencing the full-length HIV-1 genome; full-length HIV-1 genome sequences from the eighth were determined following amplification of viral …

A Radiation Hybrid Map Of The Cat Genome: Implications For Comparative Mapping, William J. Murphy, Shan Sun, Zhang-Qun Chen, Naoya Yuhki, Deborah Hirschmann, Marilyn Menotti-Raymond, Stephen J. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

Ordered gene maps of mammalian species are becoming increasingly valued in assigning gene variants to function in human and animal models, as well as recapitulating the natural history of genome organization. To extend this power to the domestic cat, a radiation hybrid (RH) map of the cat was constructed integrating 424 Type I-coding genes with 176 microsatellite markers, providing coverage over all 20 feline chromosomes. Alignment of parallel RH maps of human and cat reveal 100 conserved segments ordered (CSOs) between the species, nearly three times the number observed with reciprocal chromosome painting analyses. The observed number is equivalent to …

Discourse Functions And Syntactic Complexity In Synchronous And Asynchronous Communication, Susana Sotillo May 2000

Discourse Functions And Syntactic Complexity In Synchronous And Asynchronous Communication, Susana Sotillo

Department of Linguistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The present study investigates discourse functions and syntactic complexity in English-as-a-second-language (ESL) learner output obtained via two different modes of computer-mediated communication (CMC): asynchronous and synchronous discussions. Two instructors and twenty-five students from two advanced ESL writing classes participated in this study. Answers were sought to the following questions: a) Are the discourse functions present in ESL learners' synchronous discussions of reading assignments quantitatively and qualitatively different from those found in asynchronous discussions? And, b) which mode of CMC shows more syntactically complex learner output? The results showed that the quantity and types of discourse functions present in synchronous discussions …

Gender Differences Of The Older Adult In Relationship To Ego Integrity And The Need For Control., Ginger Helm May 2000

Gender Differences Of The Older Adult In Relationship To Ego Integrity And The Need For Control., Ginger Helm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined gender differences in relationship to ego integrity resolution of Erikson's stage theory and the need for control in the older adult ranging from 55-90 years of age. Erikson's ego integrity versus despair was measured with a subscale found in Measures of Psychological Development by Hawley (1988). The need for control was measured with a scale developed by Burger and Cooper (1979).

Because of social roles, it was first predicted that males would score higher on resolution of ego integrity and lower on the need for control. The mean resolution of integrity score for males (N=31) was …

Race, Gender And Performance In Grace Nichols’S The Fat Black Woman’S Poems, Maite Escudero May 2000

Race, Gender And Performance In Grace Nichols’S The Fat Black Woman’S Poems, Maite Escudero

Journal of International Women's Studies

From the Article:

In a world of diverse cultures and societal beliefs, marginalized groups often share common experiences. Recurrent themes in the literature of black peoples include anti-imperialism, racism, sexism, exile, ‘cultural schizophrenia’, language, otherness and home to ancestors, just to name a few. Yet, there is no single black voice: black writing can come from everywhere in the world – America, Africa, the Caribbean, Asia and Britain. As a result, an individual may become torn between conflicting expressions by others within the same cultural group. What is at issue here is the recognition of extraordinary variation of subjective positions …

Remote Sensing And Geographic Information Systems For Decision Analysis In Public Resource Administration: Case Study In A Southwestern Watershed, William G. Kepner May 2000

Remote Sensing And Geographic Information Systems For Decision Analysis In Public Resource Administration: Case Study In A Southwestern Watershed, William G. Kepner

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Alternative futures analysis is a scenario-based approach to regional land planning that attempts to synthesize existing scientific information in a format useful to community decision makers. Typically, this approach attempts to investigate the impacts of several alternative sets of choices preferred by representative stakeholder groups relative to selected environmental or economical endpoints. Potential impacts from each of the scenarios are compared to current conditions of the region in terms of a set of processes that are modeled within a geographic information system. Future conditions are generally examined from the perspective of a recent baseline condition (versus empirically determined using a …

Prominent Signs Of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity In The Adult, Marcia Katz May 2000

Prominent Signs Of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity In The Adult, Marcia Katz

Master's Projects

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurophyschiatric syndrome which most commonly becomes apparent during the first few years of grade school. While it was previously thought that this disorder remitted before or during adolescence, it has become well established that many patients will have an illness course that persists well into adulthood. The purpose of this study was to determine the 10 most prominent symptoms of ADHD in the adult population. Using the Dunphy and Winland-Brown (1998) "Circle of Caring" conceptual framework and the Wender (1998) Utah Criteria Scale questionnaire, a convenience sample of females (N=l5) from northern California were …

Integrating Residential Care Facilities Into Neighborhoods, Leila H. Moncharsh May 2000

Integrating Residential Care Facilities Into Neighborhoods, Leila H. Moncharsh

Master's Projects

This report examines the issue of integrating residential care facilities (RCFs) into neighborhoods from three perspectives: legal, social scientific research, and from a zoning regulatatory approach. RCFs serve a wide range of disabled persons, but the report focuses mainly upon RCF clients who suffer from mental illness, AIDS/HIV, and drug addiction - i.e., the type of clients that most neighborhoods would not welcome. Rather than focusing, however, upon blaming neighbors or clients, this report deals with recognizing that there can be very real impacts from RCFs located in a neighborhood and looks at ways to address the impacts. The report …

General background on the Clean Water Act - Section 404 and regulations affecting wetlands, compensatory mitigation and mitigation banking is provided. Included are general problems with monitoring and enforcement of mitigation, pros and cons of preservation as compensatory …

Avery Dulles's Advocacy Of Reformulation Of Dogma And Doctrinal Development, Richard Warneck May 2000

Avery Dulles's Advocacy Of Reformulation Of Dogma And Doctrinal Development, Richard Warneck

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

The first chapter of this study examines the setting for Father Dulles's energetic work in the years immediately following Vatican Council II. With respect to the Church’s dogmatic formulations, it was apparent to Father Dulles that the Council tacitly proclaimed the end of irreformability. The Church's doctrinal statements must undergo reformulation in order to express adequately and communicate incisively the Christian faith to the world of the late twentieth century. Furthermore, his own epistemology, methodology, and theology did, in effect, shape his outlook regarding reformulation. These subjects are treated at length in chapter two, complemented by close attention to his …

Ion-Kill Dosimetry, Robert Katz, F. A. Cucinotta, M. Fromm, A. Chambaudet

Robert Katz Publications

Unanticipated late effects in neutron and heavy ion therapy, not attributable to overdose, imply a qualitative difference between low and high LET therapy. We identify that difference as ‘ion kill’, associated with the spectrum of z/β in the radiation field, whose measurement we label ‘ion-kill dosimetry’.
