Pathways To Family Preservation Services, Rebecca Ann Carman Jan 2000

Pathways To Family Preservation Services, Rebecca Ann Carman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The study examines the socio-demographics of families participating in Las Vegas, Nevada's Intensive Family Preservation Program, the crisis precipitators that these families experience, and the services that were directed at the identified crisis precipitators. A qualitative research design was utilized in the analysis of 15 case files. Majority of the families experienced the following crisis precipitators: problems in parenting, children's behavioral and emotional problems, financial problems, substance abuse, and parent's emotional problems. The data suggested that family preservation workers are providing services to address the identified precipitators. The conclusions of this study indicate that intensive family preservation programs could be …

The Effectiveness Of Functional Family Therapy In Substance-Involved Family Preservation Clients, Andrew D Butcher

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Abuse and neglect of children has been a recognized problem in America for many years. Recent developments in the child welfare system have introduced intensive, family-based services, otherwise known as family preservation services. The aim is to preserve the family and provide reasonable efforts to avoid out of home placement. State and private family preservation programs across the country have been faced with the challenge of evaluating program effectiveness and to better meet the needs of client populations by enhancing treatment models and programs; The Nevada State Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) has utilized valuable resources to evaluate …

The Effects Of Adhd Child And Parenting Groups, Tonya Yvonne Gardner-Hernandez

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed childhood disorders in the United States. The symptomatic behaviors of ADHD often start as noncompliant behaviors, which can manifest themselves into increasingly inappropriate behaviors. If left untreated ADHD can become the catalyst for additional disruptive behavior disorders, as the child develops and begins to experience an increase in academic demands, family and peer rejection; This study used a one-group pretest-posttest design that was implemented in four separate ADHD parent and child groups. There were 16 child participants and 9 parent participants. Three of the five hypotheses were accepted. The children's …

Generational Conflict, Human Capital Accumulation, And Economic Growth, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Mary E. Lovely, Mehmet Serkan Tosun Jan 2000

Generational Conflict, Human Capital Accumulation, And Economic Growth, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Mary E. Lovely, Mehmet Serkan Tosun

Center for Policy Research

Worldwide, dependency ratios are forecast to increase dramatically in the next 50 years. A great deal of attention has been devoted to understanding the changes in fiscal policies that "must" take place to accommodate these changes. In contrast, less effort has been concentrated on studying the fiscal shifts that will endogenously result from demographic pressures. An example of particular interest is the degree to which a more elderly population will support public spending for education. We use an overlapping-generations model to investigate the effect of this demographic transition on the endogenous determination of public spending for education. A demographic transition …

The Anytime Anyplace Degree In Information Resources And Library Science, Marianne Buehler

Articles

The innovative distance education program at the School of Information Resources and Library Science is a model for higher education and the information industry for instructing information specialists and librarians on how to move information from place-to-place and from person-to-person. Geographically dispersed students directly experience electronic learning and communication via the Internet. Looking ahead to the future, this electronic wave of disseminating knowledge is increasingly more in demand and requires skills and expertise to successfully serve a clientele. This distance education program may be the only way a graduate student interested in information resources and library science can complete a …

Dc Consortium Of Legal Service Providers: Legal Services 2000 Symposium, Peter B. Edelman Jan 2000

Dc Consortium Of Legal Service Providers: Legal Services 2000 Symposium, Peter B. Edelman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

My main point is to urge you to the see what is possible in the way of what I might call a public health approach to lawyering for the poor. In a public health approach you find something that has polluted the river and you clean it up at its source instead of just treating its victims one by one. In legal and societal terms, when we are discussing why so many children are growing up poor and dying a slow death of disappointment, the challenge is to think about it in a public health way. Of course we cannot …

Social Justice Collaboratives: Multidisciplinary Practices For People, Louise G. Trubek, Jennifer J. Farnham Jan 2000

Social Justice Collaboratives: Multidisciplinary Practices For People, Louise G. Trubek, Jennifer J. Farnham

Clinical Law Review

Multidisciplinary practices (MDPs) are a big item in legal news. State and national professional associations as well as scholars are preoccupied with the challenges to traditional legal practice. The push to revise legal institutions to allow expansion of lawyer-nonlawyer practices stems from the rapid growth and importance of large business consultancies. MDPs, however, are also an important development in reenvisioning legal practice for low and moderate income people. We are in a period of experimentation on how to provide assistance to people in dealing with law and legal institutions. There is a flowering of academic writing, conferences, and practitioner accounts …

Choosing The Lesser Evil: Comments On Besharov's "Child Abuse Realities", Margaret F. Brinig Jan 2000

Choosing The Lesser Evil: Comments On Besharov's "Child Abuse Realities", Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

Determining the degree of state intervention into intra-family decision making requires an unhappy choice between allowing abuse to continue or interfering with some families that would be better left alone. Mr. Besharov introduces the possible harms associated with the increased involvement of the state but fails to fully comprehend the circumstances that necessitate such involvement. Evils bracket the phenomenon discussed in Mr. Besharov's paper and this one. The difference in our approach lies in the choice we think is the lesser evil of the two, not that we think that either the harms associated with state involvement or the risk …

Silencing Culture And Culturing Silence: A Comparative Experience Of Centrifugal Forces In The Ethnic Studies Curriculum, Steven W. Bender Jan 2000

Silencing Culture And Culturing Silence: A Comparative Experience Of Centrifugal Forces In The Ethnic Studies Curriculum, Steven W. Bender

Faculty Articles

Using the metaphor of silencing, Professor Margaret Montoya documents the irrelevance of race, gender, and socio-historical perspectives both in legal education and, more broadly, in legal discourse. Although others have invoked this metaphor, Professor Montoya's charting of the physical, rather than merely metaphorical, space of silence moves beyond this legal literature in several respects. Viewing silence not just as dead space, Professor Montoya enlivens and colors silence and other nonverbal aspects of communication as positive cultural traits. She demonstrates how silence can be used as a pedagogical tool (a centrifugal force) in the classroom and in client interviews to bring …

Orchestrated Synergism: The Nurse-Leader As Facilitator In Collaborative Caring, Nancy C. O'Rourke Jan 2000

Orchestrated Synergism: The Nurse-Leader As Facilitator In Collaborative Caring, Nancy C. O'Rourke

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Little is known of the way that nurses' roles have evolved within a hospital setting in which efficient and affective interventions include caring for sicker patients. The emergence of the Patient Care Coordinator (PCC) is one role that nursing developed to participate in an interdisciplinary collaborative team approach to caring for sicker patients.

This qualitative study examined the exemplary role of eleven PCCs who practice in a regional nonprofit medical center. Research methodologies included interview, non-participant observation, and analysis of historical data. Interview questions were developed from the literature review on collaboration, caring, expertise, communication, and knowing the patient. Cognitive …

Evidence Issues In Domestic Violence Civil Cases, Jane C. Murphy, Jane H. Aiken

All Faculty Scholarship

New laws and policies aimed at protecting victims of domestic violence have been adopted across the country over the last twenty years. The legal approaches taken to protect battered women and control family violence have resulted in significant changes in family law. New laws include statutes permitting civil protection or restraining orders, and laws requiring that domestic violence be considered in custody and/or visitation decisions. Both of these types of statutory reforms can provide protection to adult victims of domestic violence and their children. Evaluating a parent's fitness by considering past acts of violence to other family members results in decisions …

An elderly man recently lost his wife and visits the lawyer's office for assistance in the administration of her estate. After the attorney expresses her condolences, she asks if his wife had a will. The elderly gentleman and his deceased wife were told this would eliminate the expensive legal nightmare of probate. Unfortunately, like many others, this couple was victimized by a trust mill.

The Employment Requirements Of Disabled Persons : A Study Of The Development Of State Supported Employment Provision., Timothy Paul Kleinschmidt Jan 2000

The Employment Requirements Of Disabled Persons : A Study Of The Development Of State Supported Employment Provision., Timothy Paul Kleinschmidt

Other Faculty of Health Theses

This thesis deals with the historical background concerning the development of disability-related employment measures and the employment exclusion experienced by disabled persons. In particular, the enquiry focuses upon the early post-war period up until the introduction in 1997 of the New Deal for Disabled Persons. The thesis postulates that: 1. major policy shifts within the Employment Service Disability Services (ESDS) in the early 1990s did not sufficiently reflect the employment integration needs of disabled persons; in spite of a major social values shift, to welfare-to-work measures for disabled persons these measures proved to be problematic; problems existed because of the …

The Effect Of Therapeutic Horsemanship Program On Emotionally Disturbed Boys, Alisa J. Greenwald

Other Faculty of Health Theses

The relationships between humans and animals have been associated with various therapeutic implications. While there is no agreed upon name, the term "pet facilitated therapy" has become widely accepted. Pet facilitated therapy has been particularly adopted to describe the relationship between humans and domestic animals. In contrast to public attitudes of twenty years ago, the field of animal-human relationships is now respected as a legitimate area of research investigation (Levinson, 1982.) Numerous studies have been conducted on the benefits of the relationships between domestic animals and humans; however, there continues to be little empirical evidence that specifically addresses the relationship …
