Many researchers believe that nurses live in a dual structure, encompassing both the social and nursing worlds. They contend that these two worlds have contrasting views toward nurses. This is, while nurses are guided to establish professional status, society still expects them to remain in a dependent role. This conflict is assumed to have a negative impact on nurses’ psychological and functional states (Kalisch & Kalisch, 1983 & 1987). However, this assumption has not yet been explored sufficiently. Using a phenomenological approach, this study, "Killing Ostriches" sought to investigate the experience of violence in the home of a small group of young women living in the northern suburbs of Perth. Seven young women between the ages of 17-26 took part in the study. Five of these young women claimed to have experienced violence in their family of origin and the: remaining two, introduced for triangulation purposes, claimed not to have done so. This article describes the Urban Housing Issues Symposium, an interdisciplinary program that began in 1992 as a cooperative experiment between the Saint Louis University School of Law and the Washington School of Architecture. The program, which soon expanded to include social work and public policy students, used hypothetical problems, and later real life problems, as a way of demonstrating the importance of interdisciplinary relationships that the professions have in the context of real estate development.
