Influence Of Selected Demographic Variables On Work Addiction In Municipal Recreation And Parks Professionals, Christopher M. Nunes
Visions in Leisure and Business
The primary purpose of this study was to assess the degree of work addiction in municipal recreation and park professionals and to identify demographic variables associated with work addiction. The demographic variables used in this study were: gender, work experience, education level and presence of children. There were no significant differences between any of the demographic variables.
The results indicate that the majority (51.8%) of municipal recreation and parks professionals scored in the non-work addicted category; however, 48.15 of the participants scored in either the mildly (34.1%) or highly (14%) work addicted category. The overall mean for this study was …

Public Administration - All Scholarship
Hal G. Rainey and Paula Steinbauer (1999) recently proposed a theory of effective government organizations. Several other theories exist in whole or in part, but empirical testing is rare. In this article we cut to the chase and examine several key elements of these theories empirically. First, we explore the theoretical dimensions of organizational performance and derive a taxonomy to help measure the construct. Second, we draw from the literature and develop a model predicting organizational performance. Third, we operationalize and test the model with data from the 1996 Merit Principles Survey, U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board. In the end, …

What is Leadership? Is leadership the use of power and authority to make decisions? Is leadership a skill learned over time to facilitate the process of change? These are questions which must be pondered. 1 Leadership is a process which involves the skill of communicating with others through teamwork to carry out a vision. Leadership is an influenced relationship between the leader and follower in pursuit of a common goal. As the mission and goals are defined, the organization has the opportunity to become efficient and effective. The leader-follower relationship is based on influence, change, mutual purpose, and commitment.

Psychological Consequences Of Adopting A Therapeutic Lawyering Approach: Pitfalls And Protective Strategies, Lynda L. Murdoch
Psychological Consequences Of Adopting A Therapeutic Lawyering Approach: Pitfalls And Protective Strategies, Lynda L. Murdoch
Seattle University Law Review
The integration of preventive law and therapeutic jurisprudence holds promise for enriching the careers of many practicing lawyers. However, the process of becoming more therapeutic in orientation also involves risk. This Article discusses four potential pitfalls: (1) the process of becoming psychologically-minded and its inherent hazards, including overidentification; (2) the difficulty of balancing neutrality and involvement; (3) the need to identify and manage transference and countertransference; and (4) the risk of secondary trauma. Protective strategies, drawn from the psychotherapeutic and burnout literature, are outlined. This Article stresses the need for lawyers to recognize potential hazards and draw on the experience …

Millennia come and millennia go, and the fact of war remains unchanged. People still fight for territory, the land of their fathers, Lebensraum, control of the seas, gold, silver and diamonds, oil, water, pillage and the spoils of war, resources of all kinds, the glorification of leaders, gods of many faiths, politics, ideology, conquest, the establishment, peace and stability of empires, the right to be left alone, and sometimes, so we are told, justice, resistance to aggression, and the preservation of peace. Measured in millennial time, very little about war has changed, and, further, nothing distinguished the passage from 1999 …

The Support for Working Caregivers Project is designed to study the ways in which employed parents whose children have emotional or behavioral disorders fit their work and family responsibilities together. To that end, project investigators have developed a research model of work-family fit by means of an exhaustive literature review of over 350 articles and books on work and family, the secondary data analysis of the North Carolina Family Caregiver Survey (Brennan & Poertner, 1997), and a focus group study with 41 employed parents of children with emotional or behavioral disorders (Rosenzweig, Brennan, & Ogilvie, 1998). The work-family fit research …

Professional Interventions With Parents At The Time Of The Sudden Death Of A Child, Linda Susan Charlotte Maxwell
Professional Interventions With Parents At The Time Of The Sudden Death Of A Child, Linda Susan Charlotte Maxwell
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The sudden death of a child is likely the most traumatizing event a parent can experience. Traumatic death, and particularly the death of a child, increases the risk of a complicated grieving process in mourners. Little has been written with respect to the interventions of professionals with parents at the time of a sudden death of a child. The present study examines the experiences of parents with a variety of professionals from the time of death notification through the funeral. Twenty parents who were involved in Bereaved Families of Ontario participated in this study. The purpose was to examine the …

The Sun Always Comes Out After It Rains: Exploring The Experience Of Aids Caregivers (Immune Deficiency), Susan Cadell
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This research was designed to explore the growth of people who have cared for or about someone who has died of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)-related illnesses or complications related to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) disease. It consists of a cross-sectional study of 176 bereaved caregivers of people with HIV disease, some of whom themselves are HIV-positive. Measures were selected to assess demographics, creativity, spirituality/religiosity, social support, depression, traumatic symptomatology and posttraumatic growth. A research model is tested which examines the relationship of psychosocial resources and stressors to the post-traumatic growth of the bereaved participants. In addition, seven caregivers participated …

Building Pediatric Law Careers: The University Of Michigan Law School Experience, Melissa Breger, Suellyn Scarnecchia, Frank E. Vandervort, Naomi Woloshin
Articles
There are several obstacles to training and supporting pediatric lawyers. Children are a relatively new group of clients and law schools have not traditionally provided pediatric training. The required training is particularly challenging to deliver because it is inherently interdisciplinary, requiring faculty and students to look outside of the law school to obtain necessary knowledge. The greatest obstacle to developing the careers of pediatric lawyers is the low pay and low prestige typically afforded children's lawyers. As a result, law students reasonably question the likelihood of developing a successful career in the field. The number of available jobs is limited …

Life Tomorrow: Living Through The Redevelopment Of The Heartside Area, Mackenzi Anne Huyser
Masters Theses
The Heartside area is located in the central city of Grand Rapids and is bounded by the streets of Fulton, Wealthy, Ionia and Lafayette. The neighborhood has seen a number of developmental changes in the last seven years. These changes include structural changes in buildings and a change in the clientele who visit and live in the area. The development of the VanAndel Arena, in 1995, brought many new restaurants and stores into the neighborhood. An area occupied by vacant buildings, homeless shelters, and limited growth, Heartside has seen a rapid, intense period of redevelopment. The current residents in the …

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications
Most academics build their careers and establish reputations in the traditional manner, through research and publications. Certainly, this is not the only way to secure a place in the lore of academia. Some are great teachers who gather a large following of students. Still others get involved in professional organizations. While Stan Saxton had a respectable record of publications, was a masterful teacher, and a marvelous critic, his notable contributions to sociology came through his organizational work as a chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Dayton. After his tenure as chair, Stan continued to …

The Rise And Fall Of A Wall And A Dialect: Observations Of Shifting Linguistic Behavior Among Former East Berliners, Anja Vogel
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
After the dividing wall between East and West Berlin fell in 1989 many changes occurred on what was formerly the eastern side of the city. Polls taken soon after found out that the East Berliners' excitement about the reunification vanished quickly. One of the more prominent---but largely ignored---new problems was the linguistic barrier that had developed between East and West during the forty years of separation; The people in and around Berlin speak a regional dialect, Berlinish. Unbeknownst to most Berliners, the dialect took on a vastly different symbolic meaning for the people in the West than it did for …
