Unilateral Deviations With Perfect Information, Pradeep Dubey, Ori Haimanko
Unilateral Deviations With Perfect Information, Pradeep Dubey, Ori Haimanko
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
For extensive form games with perfect information, consider a learning process in which, at any iteration, each player unilaterally deviates to a best response to his current conjectures of others’ strategies; and then updates his conjectures in accordance with the induced play of the game. We show that, for generic payoffs, the outcome of the game becomes stationary in finite time, and is consistent with Nash equilibrium. In general, if payoffs have ties or if players observe more of each others’ strategies than is revealed by plays of the game, the same result holds provided a rationality constraint is imposed …
Meeting Explores Sensor Technology For Remote, Interactive Aquatic Experiments, Kendra L. Daly
Meeting Explores Sensor Technology For Remote, Interactive Aquatic Experiments, Kendra L. Daly
Marine Science Faculty Publications
Oceans, lakes, rivers, and groundwater are complex, dynamic environments in which physical, chemical, and biological processes occur over varying temporal and spatial scales (e.g., eddies, nutrient fluxes, patchiness of organisms, benthic processes, and pollution). In addition, deep, remote, or hostile systems such as hydrothermal vents and polar regions traditionally are poorly sampled, but are important to understanding global biogeochemical and hydrological cycles. In the coming decades, moored, cabled, and autonomous observatories will be used to investigate a spectrum of basic processes in aquatic environments. In anticipation of the need to develop or re‐engineer sensors to measure physical, chemical, biological, and …

Book Review: We The People: The Fourteenth Amendment And The Supreme Court, S. I. Strong
Faculty Publications
Never one to shirk a challenge, Michael Perry has taken on the difficult task of investigating whether, as charged by a number of prominent social and legal commentators, "the modern Supreme Court, in the name of the Fourteenth Amendment [to the US Constitution], [has] usurped prerogatives and made choices that properly belong to the electorally accountable representatives of the American people," and if so, to what extent (p. 8). Perry makes no attempt to address every facet of Fourteenth Amendment doctrine, but instead focuses his discussion on some of the most controversial topics: racial segregation, affirmative action, discrimination on the …
Comparison Of Coastal Fringe And Interior Forests As Reserves For Marbled Murrelets On Vancouver Island, Alan E. Burger, Volker Bahn, Angeline R.M. Tillmanns
Comparison Of Coastal Fringe And Interior Forests As Reserves For Marbled Murrelets On Vancouver Island, Alan E. Burger, Volker Bahn, Angeline R.M. Tillmanns
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Much of the protected habitat available to the threatened Marbled Murrelet Brachyramphus marmoratus and other old-growth associated species in the Pacific Northwest is in narrow strips along the coast (e.g., parks and scenic fringes). Using data over two years from three watersheds on southwest Vancouver Island, we show that such shoreline strip forests represent suboptimal habitat for murrelets. Murrelet detections, including circling and subcanopy behaviors, were significantly lower at 30 coastal stations (20–250 m from the shoreline edge) than at 30 interior stations (1.5–21.0 km inland). Densities of predators were significantly higher at the coastal stations. The coastal trees were …
Does Democracy Engender Equality?, John E. Roemer
Does Democracy Engender Equality?, John E. Roemer
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Many suppose that democracy is an ethos which includes, inter alia, a degree of economic equality among citizens. In contrast, we conceive of democracy as ruthless political competition between groups of citizens, organized into parties. We inquire whether such competition, which we assume to be concerned with distributive matters, will engender economic equality in the long run. The society consists of an infinite sequence of generations, each comprised of adults and their children. Adults care about household consumption, and the future wages of their children, which are determined by educational policy. A given generation is characterized by the distribution of …
Alternative Methods For Measuring Productivity Growth, William D. Nordhaus
Alternative Methods For Measuring Productivity Growth, William D. Nordhaus
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The present study is a contribution to the theory of the measurement of productivity growth. First, it examines the welfare-theoretic basis for measuring productivity growth and shows that the ideal welfare-theoretic measure is a chain index of productivity growth rates of different sectors which uses current output weights. Second, it lays out a technique for decomposing productivity growth which separates aggregate productivity growth into three factors — the pure productivity effect, the effect of changing shares, and the effect of different productivity levels. Finally, it shows how to apply the theoretically correct measure of productivity growth and indicates which of …
Structural Change In Tail Behavior And The Asian Financial Crisis, Carmela E. Quintos, Zhenhong Fan, Peter C.B. Phillips
Structural Change In Tail Behavior And The Asian Financial Crisis, Carmela E. Quintos, Zhenhong Fan, Peter C.B. Phillips
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper explores tests of the hypothesis that the tail thickness of a distribution is constant over time. Using Hill’s conditional maximum likelihood estimator for the tail index of a distribution, tests of tail shape constancy are constructed that allow for an unknown breakpoint. The recursive test is shown to be inconsistent in one direction, and only a one-sided test is recommended. Specifically, the test can be used when the alternative hypothesis is that the tail index decreases over time. A rolling and sequential version of the test is consistent in both directions. The methods are illustrated on recent stock …
Productivity Growth And The New Economy, William D. Nordhaus
Productivity Growth And The New Economy, William D. Nordhaus
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The present study is the third in a series of three papers devoted to issues in the measurement of productivity and productivity growth. The major findings are as follows. First, this study shows that the new data set used here, which develops data on total output, business sector output, and “well-measured” output, and relying on income-side data, provides a useful supplement to existing data sets. Second, there has clearly been a rebound in labor-productivity growth in recent years. All three sectoral definitions show a major acceleration in labor productivity in the last three years of the period (1996-98) relative to …
New Data And Output Concepts For Understanding Productivity Trends, William D. Nordhaus
New Data And Output Concepts For Understanding Productivity Trends, William D. Nordhaus
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The present study is the second is a series of three papers devoted to issues in the measurement of productivity and productivity growth. The contributions of the present paper are three. First, it introduces a new approach to measuring industrial productivity based on income-side data that are published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). The data are internally consistent in that both inputs and outputs are income-side measures of value added, whereas the usual productivity measures combine expenditure-side output measures with income-side input measures. Second, because of interest in the “new economy,” we have also constructed a set of …
Development And Validation Of A Pedestrian Lower Limb Non-Linear 3-D Finite Element Model, Peter Schuster, Gopal Jayaraman
Development And Validation Of A Pedestrian Lower Limb Non-Linear 3-D Finite Element Model, Peter Schuster, Gopal Jayaraman
Mechanical Engineering
Lower limb injury is becoming an increasingly important concern in vehicle safety for both occupants and pedestrians. To enable vehicle manufacturers to better understand the biomechanical effects of design changes, it is deemed beneficial to employ a biomechanically fidelic finite element model of the human lower limb.
The model developed in this study includes long bones (tibia, fibula, femur) and flat bone (patella) as deformable bodies. The pelvis and foot bones are modeled as rigid bodies connected to the femur and tibia/fibula via rotational spring-dashpots. The knee is defined by scanned bone surface geometry and is surrounded by the menisci, …

Biogeochemistry And Contaminant Geochemistry Of Marine And Estuarine Sediments, New Haven, Connecticut (Usa), Michael A. Kruge, Gaboury Benoit
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The urbanized shore areas of Long Island Sound in the vicinity of New Haven, Connecticut (USA) have a long history of exposure to point and non-point sources of pollution, New Haven having been one of the birthplaces of the industrial revolution. As an unintended consequence of such activities, the region's sedimentary systems have incorporated a complex mixture of organic and inorganic contaminants. With its long and varied pollution history and the multiplicity of sedimentary environments (fluvial, estuarine, intertidal, marsh, etc.) present in a compact geographical area, the region is ideal natural laboratory for field testing new contamination assessment techniques. The …

Breaking Down The Boundaries Of Malpractice Law, Philip G. Peters Jr.
Breaking Down The Boundaries Of Malpractice Law, Philip G. Peters Jr.
Missouri Law Review
Historically, courts have treated professional malpractice cases as unique. When disputes that would otherwise have been governed by tort rules of general application have arisen in the context of medical treatment, courts have routinely constructed special rules for the resolution of those disputes. Recent evidence suggests that this penchant for special rules may be weakening and that malpractice law may be slowly melting back into the sea of tort doctrine. The three Missouri health care la cases noted in this issue are the latest evidence that courts today are more willing to resolve medical negligence actions using tort rules of …
Just What The Doctor Ordered--Or Was It: Missouri Pharmacists' Duty Of Care In The 21st Century, Michele L. Hornish
Just What The Doctor Ordered--Or Was It: Missouri Pharmacists' Duty Of Care In The 21st Century, Michele L. Hornish
Missouri Law Review
Recent studies have suggested that up to five percent of all prescriptions filled in hospitals contain errors. Medical commentators have expressed concern that this figure may be even higher for outpatient prescription. As a result of medication errors, patients suffer uncomfortable and even traumatic results in the form of “adverse drug events,” while the health care system incurs needless costs. These adverse drug events are normally preventable, and are considered to be a current problem by hospital administrators and doctors alike. Now, courts are beginning to recognize the problem, and have suggested a solution by adopting a heightened standard of …
Learned Intermediary Doctrine In The Age Of Direct Consumer Advertising, The, Bradford B. Lear
Learned Intermediary Doctrine In The Age Of Direct Consumer Advertising, The, Bradford B. Lear
Missouri Law Review
Traditionally drug manufacturers have been excused from the general duty to warn consumers about the risks associated with their products by the learned intermediary doctrine. Though the doctrine has a sound grounding in public policy, drug companies have recently employed marketing strategies that undermine the usefulness of the learned intermediary rule. In Doe v. Alpha Therapeutic Corp., the Missouri Court of Appeals for the Eastern District of Missouri recently addressed whether the learned intermediary doctrine can be used as a defense when a drug company markets a product directly to consumers. This Note discusses the learned intermediary defense and its …
Strategic Disclosure In The Patent System, Douglas Lichtman, Scott Baker, Kate Kraus
Strategic Disclosure In The Patent System, Douglas Lichtman, Scott Baker, Kate Kraus
Vanderbilt Law Review
Patent applications are evaluated in light of the prior art. What this means is that patent examiners evaluate a claimed invention by comparing it with what in a rough sense corresponds to the set of ideas and inventions already known to the public. This is done for three reasons. First, the comparison helps to ensure that patents issue only in cases where an inventor has made a non-trivial contribution to the public's store of knowledge. Second, it protects a possible reliance interest on the part of the public since, once an invention is widely known, members of the public might …
