Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus: Description Of Persistence In Individual Pigs Upon Experimental Infection, R. Allende, W. W. Laegreid, G. F. Kutish, J. A. Galeota, R. W. Wills, Fernando A. Osorio Nov 2000

Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus: Description Of Persistence In Individual Pigs Upon Experimental Infection, R. Allende, W. W. Laegreid, G. F. Kutish, J. A. Galeota, R. W. Wills, Fernando A. Osorio

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

We studied the persistence of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) in individual experimentally infected pigs, during a period of up to 150 days postinfection (dpi). The results of this study suggest that the persistence of PRRSV involves continuous viral replication but that it is not a true steady-state persistent infection. The virus eventually clears the body and seems to do it in most of the animals by 150 dpi or shortly thereafter. High genetic stability was seen for several regions of the persistent PRRSV’s genome, although some consistent mutations in the genes of envelope glycoproteins and M protein …

A Benefit-Cost Analysis Model For Social Service Agencies, Robert Schalock, John Butterworth Nov 2000

A Benefit-Cost Analysis Model For Social Service Agencies, Robert Schalock, John Butterworth

All Institute for Community Inclusion Publications

Current public policy is based on two fundamental principles: equity and efficiency. Equitable programs contribute to balancing the needs and desires of the various groups in society; whereas efficient programs are those that serve to increase the net value of goods and services available to society. Benefit-cost analysis is a tool developed to determine whether a program produces effects that justify the costs incurred to operate the program. The benefit-cost model presented in this monograph requires the reader to:

  1. Understand the concept of an analytical perspective;
  2. Move beyond viewing benefit-cost analysis as a simple ratio of benefits to costs;
  3. Include …

A Study Of The Eastern Santa Clara Street Business District, Kumi Kikuzawa Nov 2000

A Study Of The Eastern Santa Clara Street Business District, Kumi Kikuzawa

Master's Projects

In many cities that have experienced fast growth, the aging of commercial districts has been an issue. As the city has sprawled, suburban shopping centers have been in more demand than aging inner-city commercial districts. As a result, they have been blighted and declined, and have become a target for redevelopment and revitalization.

The City of San Jose is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. Since the 1960’s, San Jose has shifted from a farming community to the center of Silicon Valley (San Jose 1994a, 1). San Jose is now the largest city in Santa Clara County …

Trial Practice And Procedure, C. Frederick Overby, Jason Crawford, Joshua Sacks, Richard A. Griggs, Matthew E. Cook

Mercer Law Review

This survey period is most notable for the diversity of cases touching upon trial practice and procedure decided by the Georgia appellate courts. Among those were cases fleshing out the permissible parameters of attorney-client contractual relations, scaling back the malpractice affidavit pleading requirement, defining further what constitutes a doctor-patient relationship, interpreting the wrongful death act to determine who can properly bring a claim, and declining to apply the self-contradictory testimony rule to a party's expert witness. Other important decisions addressed previously undecided evidentiary questions, confused medical providers attempting to comply with thirdparty requests for production of documents, and expanded the …

Envy And Jealousy: A Study Of Separation Of Powers And Judicial Review, Laura E. Little Nov 2000

Envy And Jealousy: A Study Of Separation Of Powers And Judicial Review, Laura E. Little

UC Law Journal

In the enclosed study, Professor Little analyzes judicial review from a perspective never before explored: civilization's understanding of jealousy and envy. For her raw material, Professor Little uses the recently aggressive decisions of the United States Supreme Court interpreting federalism and separation of powers issues. She scrutinizes the decisions in light of scholarship in philosophy, psychology, and other social sciences studying the sources and cures for envy and jealousy. In particular, Professor Little uses the jealousy and envy literature to navigate several questions seizing the attentions of federal jurisdiction and constitutional law scholars: Can we justify supreme judicial review? Is …

An Observation And A Strange But True "Tale": What Might The Historical Trials Of Animals Tell Us About The Transformative Potential Of Law In American Culture, Paul Schiff Berman Nov 2000

An Observation And A Strange But True "Tale": What Might The Historical Trials Of Animals Tell Us About The Transformative Potential Of Law In American Culture, Paul Schiff Berman

UC Law Journal

Few would dispute that law and legal procedures lie at the core of American self-identity and are woven deeply into the fabric of our culture. Indeed, our nation's faith in law has frequently been the subject of criticism. Most recently, self-proclaimed "communitarian" commentators have warned that our insistence on legal solutions is encouraging us to become a society of litigants whose attachment to "rights talk" and legal battles is thwarting our ability to reach consensus on social issues or instill shared values in our communities. While there are many possible responses to such a critique, this Essay offers one that …

First-Party Bad Faith: The Search For A Uniform Standard Of Culpability, Dominick C. Capozzola Nov 2000

First-Party Bad Faith: The Search For A Uniform Standard Of Culpability, Dominick C. Capozzola

UC Law Journal

For almost thirty years, courts have been experimenting with the tort of First-Party Bad Faith. As a consequence, insurance companies are receiving mixed signals about how careful they should be when assessing their first-party claims. This becomes even more confusing when one considers that only half of the states have accepted First-Party Bad Faith. In this Note, Dominick Capozzola argues first that all of the states should accept the tort of First-Party Bad Faith. In so doing, he discusses the reasons for and against First-Party Bad Faith, concluding that the policy reasons supporting the tort far outweigh the traditional contract …

Shall The Sins Of The Son Be Visited Upon The Father--Video Game Manufacturer Liability For Violent Video Games, David C. Kiernan Nov 2000

Shall The Sins Of The Son Be Visited Upon The Father--Video Game Manufacturer Liability For Violent Video Games, David C. Kiernan

UC Law Journal

In the wake of the perverse pattern of horrifying schoolyard shootings in Littleton, Colorado, and in Paducah, Kentucky, the video game industry has increasingly come under fire for its excessively violent video games. In particular, the potential for tort liability for video game manufacturers has attracted significant attention. This raises questions of whether the video game manufacturers can be held liable for the deaths or injuries of those students and teachers under traditional tort principles and whether the First Amendment will preclude such an action. This dialogue takes on new urgency following the recently published FTC report Marketing Violent Entertainment …

Teaching Science To English-As-Second-Language Learners: Teaching, Learning, And Assessment Strategies For Elementary Esl Students, Gayle A. Buck

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The number of reported LEP students enrolled in public and nonpublic schools has been increasing since 1986. In 1997, 22 State Education Agencies (SEA) in the United States reported the percent age of LEP students increased more than 10 per cent, and nine SEAs reported increases of 25 percent or greater (Macias, 1998). Overall, the number of students who speak languages other than English at home increased by more than 68 percent in the past 10 years (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, 1997). This article relates to the National Science Education Standards’ Teaching Standard B: Teachers of …

Simulation Of Daily And Monthly Stream Discharge From Small Watersheds Using The Swat Model, Crystal A. Spruill, Stephen R. Workman, Joseph L. Taraba Nov 2000

Simulation Of Daily And Monthly Stream Discharge From Small Watersheds Using The Swat Model, Crystal A. Spruill, Stephen R. Workman, Joseph L. Taraba

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was evaluated and parameter sensitivities were determined while modeling daily streamflows in a small central Kentucky watershed over a two-year period. Streamflow data from 1996 were used to calibrate the model and streamflow data from 1995 were used for evaluation. The model adequately predicted the trends in daily streamflow during this period although Nash-Sutcliffe R2 values were –0.04 and 0.19 for 1995 and 1996, respectively. The model poorly predicted the timing of some peak flow values and recession rates during the last half of 1995. Excluding daily peak flow values from August …

Emotion And Group Cohesion In Productive Exchange, Edward J. Lawler, Shane R. Thye, Jeongkoo Yoon Nov 2000

Emotion And Group Cohesion In Productive Exchange, Edward J. Lawler, Shane R. Thye, Jeongkoo Yoon

Faculty Publications

This study refines and experimentally tests a theory of relational cohesion that explains how and when actors become committed to one another in the context of multiactor exchange. The theory asserts that frequent social exchange results in (1) positive emotions that solidify and strengthen the person-to-group bond and (2) uncertainty reduction that renders the focal group more salient in relation to others. These two mechanisms produce a sense of psychological group formation and ultimately increase observable acts of commitment. In a “productive exchange” setting, three actors negotiate a joint venture that requires the assent of all members. The exchanges featured …

Tibiocalcaneal Kinematics Of Barefoot Versus Shod Running, Alex Stacoff, Benno M. Nigg, Christoph Reinschmidt, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, Arne Lundberg Nov 2000

Tibiocalcaneal Kinematics Of Barefoot Versus Shod Running, Alex Stacoff, Benno M. Nigg, Christoph Reinschmidt, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, Arne Lundberg

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Barefoot running kinematics has been described to vary considerably from shod running. However, previous investigations were typically based on externally mounted shoe and/or skin markers, which have been shown to overestimate skeletal movements. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare calcaneal and tibial movements of barefoot versus shod running using skeletal markers. Intracortical bone pins with reflective marker triads were inserted under standard local anesthetic into the calcaneus and tibia of five healthy male subjects. The subjects ran barefoot, with a normal shoe, with three shoe soles and two orthotic modifications. The three-dimensional tibiocalcaneal rotations were determined using …

Contributions Of Proximal And Distal Moments To Axial Tibial Rotation During Walking And Running, T. L. Bellchamber, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert Nov 2000

Contributions Of Proximal And Distal Moments To Axial Tibial Rotation During Walking And Running, T. L. Bellchamber, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine the cause and effect relationship between tibial internal rotation and pronation of the foot during walking and heel–toe running. This would allow predictions of orthotic effectiveness in reducing knee pain related to excessive internal tibial rotation. Kinematic and force plate data were collected from twenty subjects performing ten running and ten walking trials across a force plate. Using a least-squares algorithm, attitude matrices for each segment in each frame were obtained and the angular velocity vector of the tibia was calculated. The intersegmental moment at the ankle was calculated from ground reaction …

What Do Students Learn From Service-Learning And How Do We Know It?, Scott A. Chadwick Nov 2000

What Do Students Learn From Service-Learning And How Do We Know It?, Scott A. Chadwick

Special Topics, General

Service-learning presents a unique opportunity for those interested in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). This opportunity exists because relatively little empirical research has been conducted on the efficacy of service-learning with respect to the intended learning outcomes designed into the course by the teacher.

A Comparison Of Adjudicated Spousal Abusers And Controls Using The Mjvl.Pl-2 And Mcml-Ul, Sandra L. Lundblad

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Approximately 21.000 women per week are assaulted by their domestic partners in the United States (Stamp & Sabourin, l 995). Beasley and Stoltenberg ( 1992) advised that "work with abusive men could benefit from careful attention to the role of anger and personality disorders in this population" (p.316). Research generally indicates that male spousal abusers have been characterized in various ways and nave been created with varying levels of success. In order to design effective prevention and treatment plans, it is important to comprehend the nature of spousal abuse, and what research has to say about intimate abusers and their …
