Local Government Law, R. Perry Sentell Jr. Nov 2000

Local Government Law, R. Perry Sentell Jr.

Mercer Law Review

The arresting officer established the case and the Defendant, sensing the inevitability of his plight, entered a plea of guilty. The City Court Judge, a compassionate man, ... began his routine of delivering a short lecture on the evils of alcohol .... "Now you see, John, this... is a perfect example of what happens when you start drinking. You go out, you get drunk, you get behind the wheel, and here you are severely injured. By the way, what's your prognosis?" It was apparent ... that [the Defendant] considered the Judge's question to be of utmost importance. However, it was …

Combined Effects Of Screening And Band Gap Renormalization On The Energy Of Optical Transitions In Zno And Gan, D. C. Reynolds, David C. Look, B. Jogai Nov 2000

Combined Effects Of Screening And Band Gap Renormalization On The Energy Of Optical Transitions In Zno And Gan, D. C. Reynolds, David C. Look, B. Jogai

Physics Faculty Publications

The energy positions of the optical transitions in both GaN and ZnO were investigated when the samples were excited simultaneously with a HeCd laser and an Ar+ ion laser. The increased number of free electrons excited by the Ar+ ion laser will effectively screen both the free exciton and bound exciton transitions, resulting in a blueshift. The increased number of free electrons also produces many-body effects, which lead to a reduction of the band gap energy and thus a redshift. The resultant of screening and renormalization results in a redshift of the optical transitions in ZnO but a …

Curriculum And Assessment : A Question Of Politics?, Christine R. Brew, Gilah C. Leder Nov 2000

Curriculum And Assessment : A Question Of Politics?, Christine R. Brew, Gilah C. Leder

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) has been subject to ongoing modifications since its full introduction in 1992. These changes were largely driven by vocal opponents of this educational reform. In this paper we give voice to teachers charged with implementing the curriculum and assessment directives of the VCE. Specifically, we draw on the experiences of close to 500 senior mathematics teachers – through interview and survey data - to consider the impact on them of the evolution of the VCE.

Producer Protection Act Of 2000, J. David Aiken Nov 2000

Producer Protection Act Of 2000, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

Agricultural production contracts are becoming more widespread in Nebraska. (Contract production should be distinguished from custom farming, which is not at issue here). Under ag production contracts, farmers may contract to produce crops or livestock typically for processors. Contracting is widespread in the broiler industry, and is becoming more common in the swine and beef industry, and for some crops. The Producer Protection Act of 2000 (PPA) is a proposed model state statute prepared by the National Association of Attorney Generals to deal with legal issues associated with agricultural contracting. The PPA was developed in order to avoid some problems …

A Survey Of Context-Aware Mobile Computing Research, Guanling Chen, David Kotz Nov 2000

A Survey Of Context-Aware Mobile Computing Research, Guanling Chen, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

Context-aware computing is a mobile computing paradigm in which applications can discover and take advantage of contextual information (such as user location, time of day, nearby people and devices, and user activity). Since it was proposed about a decade ago, many researchers have studied this topic and built several context-aware applications to demonstrate the usefulness of this new technology. Context-aware applications (or the system infrastructure to support them), however, have never been widely available to everyday users. In this survey of research on context-aware systems and applications, we looked in depth at the types of context used and models of …

Eco- Industrial Parks A Feasibility Study For San Francisco, Lemont Erick Adams Nov 2000

Eco- Industrial Parks A Feasibility Study For San Francisco, Lemont Erick Adams

Master's Projects

The this report addresses the feasibility of developing an Eco-Industrial Park (EIP) on the Pier 90-94 Baeklands site adjacent to the Bay View Hunters Point area of San Francisco. The Eco-Industrial Park concept is a new paradigm of Industrial Ecology, in which, an industrial system of planned materials and energy exchanges occurs, creating sustainable economic, ecological and social relationships. Communities like Hunters Point suffering from severe economic distress and Environmental Justice issues can potentially alleviate environmental and economic degradation through the development of an EIP. Eco- Industrial development fits with other existing economic development approaches planners currently use, such as …

Dancing Around Employment At-Will: Can Fraud Provide Plaintiffs A Way To Hold Their Employers Liable, James E. Meadows Nov 2000

Dancing Around Employment At-Will: Can Fraud Provide Plaintiffs A Way To Hold Their Employers Liable, James E. Meadows

Missouri Law Review

For over a century, the employment at-will doctrine has formed an important part of American jurisprudence. The doctrine, and what some see as its potentially harsh results, have received strong criticism. In some states, courts have used their ability to modify the common law to alter the employment at-will doctrine by creating exceptions based on public policy, the use of employee handbooks, and face-to-face statements by managers that imply a promise of employment. The Missouri Court of Appeals for the Eastern District of Missouri recently gave discharged employees a new way to avoid the almost absolute bar of the employment …
