History And Future Of Wildlife Damage Management Conference, Daniel J. Decker

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

The Eastern Wildlife Damage Management (EWDM) Conference was developed (1st conference held in 1983) to focus on people-wildlife interaction issues occurring in the eastern U.S. Developed as a Renewable Resources Extension Act activity, the purpose of the conference was to improve wildlife resource management and increase outputs of agricultural and forestry commodities. A primary planning issue for the 1st EWDM Conference was whether to represent the conference focus as wildlife damage "control" or "management." Control was selected initially, but the title evolved since then to be replaced by "management," reflecting the central role of wildlife conflict mitigation in wildlife management. …

Rethinking Human Services For Latinos In The Plains: New Paradigms And Recommendations For Practice, Robert Moreno, Lawrence P. Hernandez, Jennifer Schroeder, Ani Yazedijan Oct 2000

Rethinking Human Services For Latinos In The Plains: New Paradigms And Recommendations For Practice, Robert Moreno, Lawrence P. Hernandez, Jennifer Schroeder, Ani Yazedijan

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In this paper we provide human service professionals with a foundation for understanding the cultural and programmatic issues necessary for effectively addressing the needs of Latinos within a context of demographic transition and decreases in public support for educational attainment, physical and mental health, and occupational success. A long tradition of deficit thinking has shaped many of the current models employed when addressing the needs of Latinos. The authors suggest "community/culturally centered" or "strengths-based" approaches, such as community based organizations (CBOs), as promising alternatives to current practices. Coalitions among CBOs can be the most effective method in creating and sustaining …

Should Achievement Tests Be Used To Judge School Quality?, Scott C. Bauer

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

This study provides empirical evidence to answer the question whether student scores on standardized achievement tests represent reasonable measures of instructional quality. Using a research protocol designed by Popham and the local study directors, individual test items from a nationally-marketed standardized achievement test were rated by educators and parents to determine the degree to which raters felt that the items reflect important content that is actually taught in schools, and the degree to which raters felt that students' answers to the questions would be likely to be unduly influenced by confounded causality....

Impact Assessment Of Microfinance And Organizational Learning: Who Will Survive?, James G. Copestake Sep 2000

Impact Assessment Of Microfinance And Organizational Learning: Who Will Survive?, James G. Copestake

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

To what extent is it possible for organizations to reflect honestly on their own performance, draw appropriate conclusions, and then act on them? For many microfinance organizations this is now a question of survival. This paper argues that formal impact assessment can assist in the transition from donor-controlled replication projects to autonomous and adaptable organizations--but it often fails to do so. Pitfalls include inadequate attention to methodological detail and to the links between impact assessment and wider aspects of organizational change. The paper starts by highlighting the complexity of the overall task to which impact assessment is expected to contribute. …

IIMB Management Review

The book examines processes by which organisations come into being and achieve coherence as entities. It also discusses the issues surrounding organisational transformation and change. The understanding of these sociopsychological processes is necessary to enable managers to look at organisations as 'living' entities, to understand, maintain and develop organisations, and to manage change.

Univercity News (2000-08-28)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

What Is Missing From Iso 9000 International Quality Standards Training In The United States?, Paul Krueger Aug 2000

What Is Missing From Iso 9000 International Quality Standards Training In The United States?, Paul Krueger

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

Carnevale, Gainer and Villet (1991) observed that employers have too often used training approaches that failed to deliver “new knowledge in a context meaningful to the learner.” This conclusion was consistent with the results found in a recent study of 406 United States companies that used training to prepare their employees for registration to the ISO 9000 series of international quality assurance standards. The vast majority of companies failed to address employee learning needs, and used few research-based instructional strategies to enhance training transfer from workshop to shop floor. Companies rarely grouped employees by their ability to learn and infrequently …

Effect Of Early Childhood Tobacco Education Program On Knowledge And Attitudes Of Elementary Students, Dianne G. Pittman Aug 2000

Effect Of Early Childhood Tobacco Education Program On Knowledge And Attitudes Of Elementary Students, Dianne G. Pittman

MSN Research Projects

Tobacco use is recognized as the number one preventable cause of disease and death in the United States. As such, development of better tobacco-use prevention strategies, utilized by health care providers, is a worthy endeavor. Where it exists, initiation of formal tobacco education within the schools is focused at sixth- to eighth-grade students, the age research has shown when most tobacco experimentation begins, yet well beyond the age when ideas and attitudes are developed in favor of or in opposition to tobacco use. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effect of an early childhood tobacco education …

Implementation Of The Tennessee Divorce And Mediation Pilot Project In Hamilton County: Evaluating Program Effectiveness, Mary Kathryn Robertson Aug 2000

Implementation Of The Tennessee Divorce And Mediation Pilot Project In Hamilton County: Evaluating Program Effectiveness, Mary Kathryn Robertson

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

As more time and money are invested in training programs, the sponsors of these programs, whether those are corporations, or government agencies, want to know if the training is worth the investment. An evaluation of the training and its effects is needed to answer the questions about the usefulness, and utility of the training program. Training is typically assessed using some combination of the criteria presented in Kirkpatrick's hierarchical model (Noe & Schmitt, 1986). The four levels of evaluation in the hierarchy include reactions, learning, behavior and results. Kirkpatrick's hierarchical model has been used to devise an evaluation system for …

The Information Revolution And National Security, Thomas E. Copeland Mr. Aug 2000

The Information Revolution And National Security, Thomas E. Copeland Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The effects of the information revolution are particularly profound in the realm of national security strategy. They are creating new opportunities for those who master them. The U.S. military, for instance, is exploring ways to seize information superiority during conflicts and thus gain decisive advantages over its opponents. But the information revolution also creates new security threats and vulnerabilities. No nation has made more effective use of the information revolution than the United States, but none is more dependent on information technology. To protect American security, then, military leaders and defense policymakers must understand the information revolution.

To many in the United States, China looms large and threatening. This monograph attempts to answer, through an analysis of China's defense establishment under the leadership of Jiang Zemin, questions such as: What are the national security and national military goals of China's leaders? What strategies are Chinese leaders considering in pursuit of these goals? What is the likelihood that these goals will be attained? It assesses the political and economic determinants of China s effort to modernize its armed forces. Four possible strategies are outlined: (1) playing the superpower game," (2) playing to its strengths," (3) changing the rules …

Charismatic Authority And The Board Of The Hull House Association, 1895-1935, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Discussions of boards in the third sector literature usually proceed from assumptions grounded in Weber’s rational-legal authority and international management principles like those of Henri Fayol. The generalizations made about boards are based on rational-legal views of the board as the principal governing body of a nonprofit organization. Much less frequently examined are the roles and functions of boards in organizations grounded in other forms of authority. In particular, the relationship between charismatic authority and boards has seldom been studied. This paper will examine the role of one such board, the Board of Trustees of the Hull House Association through …
