Determination Of Freshness And Chemical Compositon Of Scad ( Trachurus Trachurus, L. 1758) Stored In Refrigerator, Gülgün F. Ünal Şengör, Ufuk Çeli̇k, Sevi̇lsen Akkuş Jan 2000

Determination Of Freshness And Chemical Compositon Of Scad ( Trachurus Trachurus, L. 1758) Stored In Refrigerator, Gülgün F. Ünal Şengör, Ufuk Çeli̇k, Sevi̇lsen Akkuş

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was carried out to determine the freshness and chemical composition of scad stored at +2C - +4°C. As a result of bacterial activities and chemical changes in fish meat TMAO breaks down to TMA, DMA and FA. In the fish meat the amounts of these compounds are important for the determination of the freshness of fish meat. Breakdown of TMAO into DMA and FA has an effect on the properties of the texture of the fish. Hence we attempted to distinguish the textural characteristics of the stored fish with sensorial analysis. It was detected that the results of …

Using Goal Programming In Rational And Economical Animal Nutrition, İsmet Doğan, Nurhan Doğan, Abdulkadi̇r Akcan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Animal nutrition is one of the important problems of people involved in animal breeding. It is essential that animals get sufficient and well-balanced nutrition to be healthy. Especially obtaining the necessary food elements from cheaper food sources becomes a major concern when ensuring sufficient and well-balanced nutrition in animal breeding. The Goal Programming Method is an improved method for solving multi-objective problems. In solving these types of problem, it cannot be expected that all the goals can be exactly obtained. The results of multi-objective problem solutions are affected by the decision of the manager or decision maker. Therefore, when there …

Ovipositional Behavior Of The 12-Spotted Lady Beetle, Coleomegilla Maculata: Choices Among Plant Species And Potential Factors Influencing Those Choices, Marisa Lynn Griffin

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Coleomegilla maculata is a beneficial coccinellid commonly found in sweet cornfields in Kentucky. Previous work on C. maculata has shown an ovipositional preferencefor the weed Acalypha ostryaefolia, compared to three selected weed species and corn. Also, predation of C. maculata egg clusters on A. ostryaefolia was less compared toclusters on corn and the presence of A. ostryaefolia led to higher densities of C. maculata larvae on corn.

I determined C. maculata ovipositional preference among weed species in fieldtests using nine common weeds. I also examined ovipositional preference using just A.ostryaefolia and Abutilon theophrasti. I assessed the roles of …

The Fabrication And Study Of Metal Chelating Stationary Phases For The High Performance Separation Of Metal Ions, Matthew James Shaw Jan 2000

The Fabrication And Study Of Metal Chelating Stationary Phases For The High Performance Separation Of Metal Ions, Matthew James Shaw

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The preparation and characterisation of chelating sorbents suitable for the high efficiency separation of trace metals in complex samples, using a single column and isocratic elution, is described. Hydrophobic, neutral polystyrene divinylbenzene resins were either impregnated with chelating dyes or dynamically modified with heterocyclic organic acids, using physical adsorption and chemisorption processes respectively. A hydrophilic silica substrate was covalently bonded with a chelating aminomethylphosphonic acid group, to assess the chelating potential of this molecule. These substrates were characterised in terms of metal retention capability (selectivity coefficients and capacity factors), separation performance, column efficiency and suitability for analytical applications. Chelating molecules …

The Role Of Mind/Body Interventions In The Management Of Coronary Heart Disease, Camilyn M. Smalley Jan 2000

The Role Of Mind/Body Interventions In The Management Of Coronary Heart Disease, Camilyn M. Smalley

Graduate Research Papers

Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death for adults in the United States. Common medical practice attempts to treat this disease with medical procedures and pharmacologic therapy and works to prevent the disease or reduce further risk through the modification of known risk factors. Although these practices are generally successful, there is growing interest in the public domain for alternative therapies that address the psychosocial domain of the disease, empower the patient, and potentially reduce side-effects of current medical treatment. Mind/body approaches represent a commonly pursued alternative. This review provides background into the development of the mind/body concept. …

The Molecular Epidemiology Of Rotavirus In Ireland, Fiona O'Halloran Jan 2000

The Molecular Epidemiology Of Rotavirus In Ireland, Fiona O'Halloran

Theses

Between 1997 and 1998, 3,136 cases of rotavirus diarrhoea were detected in Irish children less than 2 years of age. Hospital inpatients accounted for 80% of these infections, with the remainder being diagnosed in general practice. A large percentage of infections were detected in neonates, suggesting a possible inadequate maternal derived protection from existing indigenous strains. This feature suggested the possible existence of ‘novel’ strains circulating in Ireland. No data describing the epidemiology of rotavirus strains in this country currently exists. Furthermore no assessment of the potential health-economic impact or quantitation of potential disease burden was ever undertaken

Family-Centered Practice In Early Intervention Services For Infants And Toddlers: The Experience Of Families And Professionals In One Local Interagency Coordinating Council, Patrick Shannon Jan 2000

Family-Centered Practice In Early Intervention Services For Infants And Toddlers: The Experience Of Families And Professionals In One Local Interagency Coordinating Council, Patrick Shannon

Theses and Dissertations

Part H [recently reauthorized as Part C] of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) mandates the application of family-centered practice principles to early intervention services. There has been a considerable amount of literature published in early intervention journals related to family and professional relationships in early intervention and its connection to family-centered care in early intervention services. There is very little literature, however, that examined the implementation of family-centered principles from a perspective that transcended the relationship between families and early intervention providers.

This inquiry was a constructivist policy analysis of the implementation of the family-centered intent of Part …

An Examination Of A Multidimensional Model Of Customer Satisfaction With Internet Purchasing, Kathleen Vanscoyoc

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The World Wide Web and Internet have transformed the competitive business environment and altered the customer-firm relationship by creating a new retailing format and service enterprise. It is rapidly growing as a competitive distribution medium in which customer satisfaction will be a major success factor in the development and maintenance of this new retailing format. Despite its growing importance as a new shopping medium, little empirical research has been conducted that examines the relationship between Internet shopping, customer satisfaction, company image, and future online purchasing. Research is needed to develop theoretical models that will systematically explain and predict behavior related …

Part II sets forth the basic science behind cloning and how cloning differs from other, non-traditional forms of procreation such as in vitro fertilization and artificial insemination. Part III discusses the most commonly feared “science fiction” abuses associated with human cloning and current laws that may prevent such abuses from occurring. Part IV discusses the possible constitutional impediments to banning human cloning, including the First Amendment, the procreational liberty interest …

The Limits Of Empiricism: What Facts Tell Us: Comments On Daniel Keating's 'Exploring The Battle Of The Forms In Action', Dennis Patterson Jan 2000

The Limits Of Empiricism: What Facts Tell Us: Comments On Daniel Keating's 'Exploring The Battle Of The Forms In Action', Dennis Patterson

Michigan Law Review

The conventional legal academic wisdom about empiricism is that empirical information is by-and-large a good thing, that we need more of it, and that empirical analysis is preferable to many scholarly alternatives now on offer in the law review literature. I do not dispute the proposition that, all things considered, empirical information is a good thing. What I question is the notion that empirical information necessarily leads to knowledge. Put differently, it is one thing to marshal the facts, and another to know what to make of the facts. I shall raise these points both in a general way and …

The Legal Construction Of Adolescence, Elizabeth S. Scott Jan 2000

The Legal Construction Of Adolescence, Elizabeth S. Scott

Faculty Scholarship

American lawmakers have had relatively clear images of childhood and adulthood-images that fit with our conventional notions. Children are innocent beings, who are dependent, vulnerable, and incapable of making competent decisions. Several aspects of the legal regulation of childhood are based on this account. Children are assumed not to be accountable for their choices or for their behavior, an assumption that is reflected in legal policy toward their criminal conduct. They are also assumed to be unable to exercise the rights and privileges that adults enjoy, and thus are not permitted to vote, drive, or make their own medical decisions. …

Limaria Hians (Mollusca: Limacea): A Neglected Reef-Forming Keystone Species, J. M. Hall-Spencer, P. G. Moore

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

1. The case is made for recognition of the marine bivalve Limaria hians as a reef-forming species, which plays a key architectural role in certain benthic communities around the United Kingdom and Ireland. 2. This species uses byssal threads to construct nests that can coalesce to form reefs that cover hectares of seabed, contain multiple conspecifies and bind sediment. In so doing, L. hians modifies physical, chemical and biological processes at the sediment-water interface. 3. Such nests support a high diversity of associated organisms in coarse-grade sediments (19 species of algae and 265 species of invertebrates from six discrete nests …

Investigations Of The Absorption And Metabolismof Antioxidant Flavonols, Abdul Aziz Azlina Jan 2000

Investigations Of The Absorption And Metabolismof Antioxidant Flavonols, Abdul Aziz Azlina

Student Works (2000-2009)

Flavonols are polyphenols, secondary plant metabolites commonly found in plants and foods of plant origin. They have widespread biological properties in the human body. The recent discovery of their potential antioxidant activities has prompted extensive research. Flavonols particularly quercetin are potent antioxidants with higher antioxidant properties than the well known antioxidant vitamins C and E. Several epidemiology studies have demonstrated a strong inverse association between flavonoid intake and risk of coronary heart disease. The association with cancer is less defined with only some studies showing an inverse association and others not. In view of their potential to act as antioxidants …

The Recusal Alternative To Campaign Finance Legislation, John Copeland Nagle Jan 2000

The Recusal Alternative To Campaign Finance Legislation, John Copeland Nagle

Journal Articles

Typical campaign finance proposals focus on limiting the amount of money that can be contributed to candidates and the amount of money that candidates can spend. This article suggests an alternative proposal that places no restrictions on contributions or spending, but rather targets the corrupting influence of contributions. Under the proposals, legislators would be required to recuse themselves from voting on issues directly affecting contributors. I contend that this proposal would prevent corruption and the appearance of corruption while remedying the first amendment objections to the regulation of money in campaigns.
