Concentrations Levels Of Fluoride In Bottled Drinking Water And Filtered Water Using Home Filtration Systems., Sissy Ann Daniel Johnson Jan 2000

Concentrations Levels Of Fluoride In Bottled Drinking Water And Filtered Water Using Home Filtration Systems., Sissy Ann Daniel Johnson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Minimal and conflicting research exists on the fluoride content of bottled water and the degree of fluoride elimination using home filtration systems. A convenience sample of bottled waters (N=65) and home filtration systems (N=2) available in West Virginia was obtained. Results indicate: 1) fifty-seven of the brands tested contain fluoride below the optimal level; 2) only three brands had documented on the label, yet these total labels were fluoride levels inconsistent labeling; 3) seven have municipal water as their source; and 4) neither filtration system tested significantly reduced fluoride from the water. Conclusions include: 1) most bottled waters do not …

An Historical Case Study: The Pregnant Minor Program At Garfield High School, 1975–1999, William E. Law Edd

Dissertations

The researcher conducted an historical case study of the Garfield High School Pregnant Minor Program (1975–1999) which is one of three pregnant minor programs in the San Diego Unified School District. The primary purpose of this study was to provide data about the history and background of this program which may be significant to the decision makers who develop policies regarding pregnant minor programs in the district. The second purpose of the study was to provide data which may be helpful to community members, educators, policy makers, and student-parents about the issues and problems faced by students-parents which would, hopefully, …

Helping Dairy Producers Reduce The Scc, Clell Bagley Jan 2000

Helping Dairy Producers Reduce The Scc, Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

Practicing veterinarians are in an excellent position to help dairy producers recognize and deal with the problem of elevated somatic cell counts (SCC). Yet they are seldom asked to assist. A high SCC is an indication of chronic, subclinical mastitis in the herd and is also an indication of significant economic losses.

Children Of Adam, Children Of God: Christian Nurture In Early Nineteenth-Century America, Margaret Bendroth Jan 2000

Children Of Adam, Children Of God: Christian Nurture In Early Nineteenth-Century America, Margaret Bendroth

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Contemporary attitudes toward children are, in many ways, social and theological products of the early nineteenth century. Like their Victorian predecessors, modern Americans sentimentalize and celebrate children, but they also entertain some fundamental doubts about their true nature. Indeed, recent anxieties about children, following a chain of bloody schoolyard shootings, have brought some old theological questions, raised in debate a century and a half ago, into sharp relief. While most American parents today do not worry whether their smiling babe is destined for an eternal lake of fire, the growing popularity of v-chips and parental-control software suggests an active suspicion …

Proper Use Of Ammoniated Low-Quality Forages For The Wintering Of Spring-Calving Beef Cow Herds In The Intermountain West, D. R. Zobell

All Current Publications

Low‐quality forages (LQF) such as cereal straws or post‐ripe hays are often used as economical feed sources for the wintering of beef cow herds. The ammoniation of such forages increases the digestibility and crude protein (CP) enough so that these forages can be used as the basis of beef cow diets, even during late gestation and early lactation if supplemented properly.

A Crop Load Study On 'Nittany' Apple On Two Size-Controlling Rootstocks., Charles Douglas Raines

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A field study was conducted on the apple cultivar ‘Nittany’ on M.9 and M.26 rootstocks. Four crop load treatments levels: an unthinned check, 7.5, 5.0, and 2.5 fruit per centimeter trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA) were imposed on replicated trees of each rootstock to determine the effects on shoot growth and fruit size. Average terminal and bourse shoot growth were greater for the M.26 rootstock than the M.9 rootstock. Crop load levels had no significant effect on shoot growth. Thinning fruit to the 2.5 fruit/cm2 TCSA level showed the most consistent results in fruit diameter, length, and weight. Fruit size as …

Constructing Compatibility : Managing Breastfeeding And Weaning From The Mothers' Perspective, Yvonne Louise Hauck Jan 2000

Constructing Compatibility : Managing Breastfeeding And Weaning From The Mothers' Perspective, Yvonne Louise Hauck

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Breastfeeding involves phases of initiation, continuation, and weaning. Research to date has focused upon its initiation and continuation rather than the later phases, when the child is weaned from the breast. Selective aspects relating to weaning have been explored to determine infant feeding practices such as the timing of food introduction. However, that research has focused upon developing countries where the impact of infant feeding patterns and weaning practices have a significant impact on infant growth and child health. The weaning process or final phase of breastfeeding from the mothers' perspective has not been examined within the western world. In …

How General Practitioners And Aged Care Workers Perceive Incidences Of Elder Abuse, Paul Howrie Jan 2000

How General Practitioners And Aged Care Workers Perceive Incidences Of Elder Abuse, Paul Howrie

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

As the Australian population is expanding and ageing, there is an associated need for a focus to be placed on the Individual rights of elderly people, and for the general populus to be made more aware of areas related to our older generation. Elder abuse, as an area of concern, developed as an offshoot of investigations into child abuse and general domestic violence, and initially surfaced in the 1970s and 80s. Some sections of the medical profession were made specifically aware of the problem initially in 1975, through a letter that was sent to the British Medical Journal. However, throughout …

Faculty and Staff Publications

Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (Glyc3P), a glycolytic intermediate, non-enzymatically glycosylated (or glycated) and inhibited the pig heart cytoplasmic aspartate aminotransferase (cAAT). Glyc3P (5.0 mM) decreased cAAT activity by 47% after 1 min at 23 degrees C. cAAT activity remained unchanged after a 24h incubation with either glucose 6-phosphate (5.0 mM) or ribose 5-phosphate (5.0 mM). Increasing the incubation pH from 6.4 to 7.8 or the incubation temperature from 23 degrees C to 50 degrees C enhanced Glyc3P's inhibitory effect on cAAT activity. Glyc3P (250-500 microM) decreased the thermal stability of cAAT as evidenced by lowering the Tm or temperature that caused a …

The Decline In Rural Hospitals: The Effect Of Investor-Owned Hospitals., Angela Marie Foley Jan 2000

The Decline In Rural Hospitals: The Effect Of Investor-Owned Hospitals., Angela Marie Foley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Rural health care deserves special attention because rural areas have high poverty rates, a high proportion of elderly residents, and high-risk job conditions. However, the number of rural hospitals, often a rural areasí main source of health care, is decreasing. Literature has shown that one of the main factors in hospital closure is ownership, specifically for-profit. This study examines trends in rural hospitals and other factors, including for-profit ownership, that may affect the declining number of rural hospitals. Data are drawn from annual hospital data from 1974 to 1995. A moving time series analysis is used to present the trends …
