Making Room For Critical Race Theory In International Law: Some Practical Pointers, Penelope Andrews Jan 2000

Making Room For Critical Race Theory In International Law: Some Practical Pointers, Penelope Andrews

Articles & Chapters

In addition to assessing the pertinence of critical race theory in unmasking international law's colonial, racist and patriarchal underpinnings, this paper attempts to suggest practical ways in which a critical race theoryapproach can enrich the international legal system, by giving a voice to the voiceless and by addressing the conditions of marginality in which much of the developing world is trapped.

This paper will do three things. First, it will peruse the contemporary global situation with respect to international law and human rights. Second, it will assess the contribution of critical race theory in advancing an understanding of, and solution …

Variable Justice: Environmental Standards, Contaminated Fish, And "Acceptable” Risk To Native Peoples, Catherine O'Neill Jan 2000

Variable Justice: Environmental Standards, Contaminated Fish, And "Acceptable” Risk To Native Peoples, Catherine O'Neill

Faculty Articles

This article begins with the observation that “[f]ish, especially salmon, are necessary for the survival of the Native peoples of the Pacific Northwest, both as individuals and as a people.” It considers conventional approaches to regulating contamination of the waters that support the fish on which these peoples depend, and finds that the narrow focus on human physical health fails fully to comprehend the multiple dimensions of the harm to these fishing peoples. Importantly, this focus fails to appreciate the cultural dimensions of the harm. The article examines health and environmental agencies’ standard-setting practices and challenges their failure to account …

Rpos Gene Function Is A Disadvantage For Escherichia Coli Bj4 During Competitive Colonization Of The Mouse Large Intestine, Karen A. Krogfelt, Marianne Hjulgaard, Kristine Sørensen, Paul S. Cohen, Michael Givskov

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The ability of Escherichia coli to survive stress during growth in different environments is, in large part, dependent onrpoS and the genes that comprise the rpoSregulon. E. coli BJ4 and an isogenic BJ4 rpoSmutant were used to examine the influence of the rpoS gene on E. coli colonization of the streptomycin-treated mouse large intestine. Colonization experiments in which the wild-typeE. coli BJ4 and its rpoS mutant were fed individually as well as simultaneously to mice suggested that E. coli BJ4 does not face prolonged periods of nutrient starvation in the mouse large intestine and that the …

Awareness Of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points, Gayle Brosseau Jan 2000

Awareness Of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points, Gayle Brosseau

Theses

This study was an attempt to identify the awareness of principles of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) by individuals who completed an eight-hour food handlers' class at Los Angeles Mission College. A six-item questionnaire was distributed to one hundred eighty individuals enrolled in the food handlers' classes during the winter of 1999-2000. One hundred twenty-five questionnaires were returned and tabulated during the spring 2000. Data analysis revealed that there is limited awareness of HACCP principles by trainees. The study, coupled with the literature review, indicates that there is a need for HACCP training. Other research showed a correlation between …

Insecticide Resistance And Resistance Mechanisms In The Southern House Mosquito, Culex Quinquefasciatus., Jeffrey Dwayne Stancil Jan 2000

Insecticide Resistance And Resistance Mechanisms In The Southern House Mosquito, Culex Quinquefasciatus., Jeffrey Dwayne Stancil

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Significant resistance to malathion and resmethrin was found in insecticide-treated field populations of adult Culex quinquefasciatus , Say, compared with a laboratory and non-treated field strain. Resistance to both insecticides varied during the active control season and was associated with the frequency of insecticide application. Geographic variations in resistance levels were noted, and significant differences occurred between separate populations within the same mosquito control districts. Four model substrates were assessed for their suitability in detecting elevated esterase activity associated with malathion resistance. Esterase activities towards all substrates were significantly higher in field stains than a laboratory strain. Esterase activities toward …

The comparative efficacy and quality characterization of juice by six extraction methods utilizing either frozen or fresh 'Texas Star' mayhaw (Crataegus opaca Hook. and Arn.) fruit obtained from the 1998 and 1999 crop season were conducted according to temperature (cold-press or hot-press extraction) and fruit pulp pretreatment (whole or pulverized fruit with or without pectolytic enzyme). Extraction methods were steam extraction using whole fruit without added pulp juice (SE); steam extraction using whole fruit with added pulp juice (SEP); cold-press extraction using whole fruit (CPE); cold-press extraction using finely macerated fruit pulp (CPEG); hot-press extraction using finely macerated fruit pulp …

Modified Atmosphere Packaging Of Fresh -Cut Sweetpotatoes., Elif Erturk Jan 2000

Modified Atmosphere Packaging Of Fresh -Cut Sweetpotatoes., Elif Erturk

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Fresh-cut sweetpotato products have potential to create new value-added market opportunities. To determine optimum film packaging and storage temperature, fresh-cut sweetpotato slices were packaged with semipermeable polyolefin films, having different gas transmission characteristics and kept at 2 or 8°C for 14 days. The films chosen, in order of increasing permeability, were Cryovac PD900, PD961, and PD941. Among the films, only PD941 film bags maintained an aerobic atmosphere during the 14 days at both temperatures. However, the high weight loss in slices with PD941 film bags will limit the use of these film bags as modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) material. PD961 …

Comparative Biology And Ecology Of The Formosan Subterranean Termite, Coptotermes Formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) In Louisiana., Huixin Fei

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the effects of sibship patterns and different origins of colonies on mate mortality and growth of incipient colonies in the subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki. Primary reproductives from New Orleans in nonsibling pairs had significantly higher mortality than sibling pairs. The average egg production for sibling and nonsibling pairs showed no overall significance in the first oviposition period, however, the average number of larvae was consistently higher in nonsibling than in sibling-founded colonies from New Orleans. After two years, the average number of eggs or larvae present in nonsibling-founded colonies was significantly higher …

The Effects Of Equine Somatotropin (Est) On Reproductive Function In The Domestic Mare., Richard Anthony Cochran Jan 2000

The Effects Of Equine Somatotropin (Est) On Reproductive Function In The Domestic Mare., Richard Anthony Cochran

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effects of somatotropin on ovarian reproductive function has become a keen research area in mammalian species over the past decade. However, to date, very little information is available as to the effects of somatotropin administration on reproduction in the domestic mare. Therefore, the purpose of these experiments was (1) to determine the potential effects (if any) of administration of exogenous equine somatotropin on ovarian follicular development and plasma and follicular fluid hormone concentrations in cyclic and noncyclic mares, (2) to determine the mechanism(s) of action of somatotropin treatment on these parameters in the mare, (3) to develop an efficient …

Third -Party Organization Endorsement Of Products: An Advertising Cue Affecting Consumer Pre-Purchase Evaluation Of Goods And Services., Dwane Hal Dean Jan 2000

Third -Party Organization Endorsement Of Products: An Advertising Cue Affecting Consumer Pre-Purchase Evaluation Of Goods And Services., Dwane Hal Dean

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Observation of advertising in current use suggests that a new type of ad is emerging as a product positioning tool. The new ad features third-party organization (TPO) product endorsement as one of the elements of the ad (e.g. "Car of the Year" award by Motor Trend magazine, and "4-star" mutual fund rating from Morningstar). Marketers appear to be using favorable TPO statements about their products to enact their positioning strategy. This dissertation proposed that TPO endorsements are perceived by consumers as extrinsic quality cues, similar to the established quality cues of brand, price, retailer reputation, and warranty. This proposition was …
