A Strategy For Increasing The Participation Of Young Adults In The Kerrville Church Of Christ, Ronald Gregory Cummings Apr 2000

A Strategy For Increasing The Participation Of Young Adults In The Kerrville Church Of Christ, Ronald Gregory Cummings

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project/thesis focuses on young adults in general and in the Kerrville Church of Christ in particular. The problem is young adults between the ages of twenty-five to thirty-five comprise less than ten percent of the congregation. In a church of 500 members, there are not more than thirty-five individuals in that age range. The perception on the part of young adults i the congregation is that the church leadership does not value them, nor do leaders consider their opinions to be important. The solution to the problem involves analyzing the congregation, forming a focus group among young adult members, …

The Pursuit Of Proceeds By Plans, Participants And Plaintiffs' Lawyers: Dissonant Solutions To An Alliterative Problem, John R. Cella Jr. Apr 2000

The Pursuit Of Proceeds By Plans, Participants And Plaintiffs' Lawyers: Dissonant Solutions To An Alliterative Problem, John R. Cella Jr.

Campbell Law Review

With emphasis on developments in the Fourth Circuit, this Article first describes the pursuit's origination in plan language and ERISA's statutory provisions; it then explores ERISA preemption and cases in which injured participants invoke state statutory and common law to contradict plan terms. A review of the attorney's role follows, including an inquiry into issues concerning attorney fees. With consideration of policies behind ERISA, the Article concludes that adherence to well-drafted plan terms legitimizes the parties' bargain, avoids development of disparate federal common law, and facilitates the allocation of proceeds.

The Hp1 Protein Family: Getting A Grip On Chromatin, J Eissenberg, Sarah C.R. Elgin

Biology Faculty Research

HP1 was first described in Drosophila as a heterochromatin-associated protein with dosage-dependent effects on heterochromatin-induced gene silencing. Recently, membership of the HP1 protein family has expanded tremendously. A number of intriguing interactions between HP1 and other proteins have been described, implicating HP1 in gene regulation, DNA replication, and nuclear architecture.

How The News Media Tell The Story Of The Yanomami: A Qualitative Study Of Narrative Coherence And The Ideal Audience, Tania H. Cantrell Apr 2000

How The News Media Tell The Story Of The Yanomami: A Qualitative Study Of Narrative Coherence And The Ideal Audience, Tania H. Cantrell

Theses and Dissertations

The news media link anthropological discovery and the communications discipline. In this study, press stories about the Yanomami Indians of northern Brazil and neighboring Venezuela have been studied and narratively analyzed according to Narrative Paradigm Theory. While not an audience study, plausible interpretations of ideal audience member values and insights into the question of human identity are presented. It is argued that the media are storytellers who tell the audience about itself by telling it about others recursively.

Press coverage of the Yanomami is divided into eight general categories. These include the environment, effects of "civilization," warfare/violence, massacre, gold miners, …

American Advice And New Constitutions, Cass R. Sunstein Apr 2000

American Advice And New Constitutions, Cass R. Sunstein

Chicago Journal of International Law

The early 1990s were among the most extraordinary periods for constitution-making in the history of the world. Several people at the University of Chicago Law School played a role in this period, mostly as observers, to some small degree as participants. The editors of this Journal have asked me for some brief reflections on this remarkable time; I am grateful to have been asked and happy to oblige. This is an impressionistic essay, but I do have a principal theme. It involves the conflict between what might be called pragmatic and expressive conceptions of constitution-making and constitutionalism. Americans generally tend …

Diffusion And Focus In International Law Scholarship, Diane P. Wood Apr 2000

Diffusion And Focus In International Law Scholarship, Diane P. Wood

Chicago Journal of International Law

Although the advent of the Chicago Journal of International Law is a welcome event, that fact may not be obvious to all followers of international legal scholarship. After all, there are well more than seventy international law journals already being produced in the United States alone.' A complete list would be hard to compile, and in the end would still be uninformative, because of the simple fact that many international articles regularly appear in general law reviews. Moreover there are many distinguished journals published outside this country.2 Even if parochialism can be forgiven in some areas (though it is hard …

The Effects Of An Acute Stressor On Depressive Symptoms Among Older Adults: The Moderating Effects Of Social Support And Age, Kimberly A. Tyler, Dan R. Hoyt Apr 2000

The Effects Of An Acute Stressor On Depressive Symptoms Among Older Adults: The Moderating Effects Of Social Support And Age, Kimberly A. Tyler, Dan R. Hoyt

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This study uses longitudinal data to examine the potential moderating effects of social support and age among older adults exposed to an acute stressor. Using a sample of 651 older persons, data were gathered in the spring of 1992 and in the fall of 1993, approximately 60 days after the peak impact of flooding in the Midwest. Results indicate a positive association between pre- and post-flood depression and a negative association between social support and post-flood depression. For the youngest of the two older age groups, there is also a positive association between flood exposure and post-flood depression, controlling for …

The Pediatric Breathing Survey, Linda J. Galloway Apr 2000

The Pediatric Breathing Survey, Linda J. Galloway

Health Services Research Dissertations

To ensure culturally-sensitive assessments, the researcher designed a Pediatric Breathing Survey (PBS) to measure quality of life for African-American children. The purpose of this study was to test whether the PBS is a reliable and valid instrument. Comparisons of group differences on race, income and parent's level of education based on parent responses to the questionnaires were conducted. More specifically, differences in Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) between Caucasian and African-American children were examined. The researcher-designed instrument was compared to Juniper's Pediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire. The sample consisted of parents of 84 school-aged children diagnosed with asthma. …

One Mistress And No Master: Elizabeth I And Her Use Of Public Personas To Gain And Maintain Power, Michael J. Davye

History Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the evolution of the personas that Elizabeth used to gain, hold, and wield power during her reign as Queen of England. These personas were most likely conscious constructs created to deal with the problems Elizabeth faced as ruler of England. She had been bastardized by her father, Henry VIII, and, therefore, was considered by many to have no legitimate claim to the throne. But this problem was almost insignificant in contrast to the problems she faced trying to assert her authority as a female monarch. Elizabeth realized the prevailing wisdom of the …

An Assessment Of The Links Between International Diversification, Product Diversification, Performance And Risk Within Service Corporations, Sally Ann Sledge Apr 2000

An Assessment Of The Links Between International Diversification, Product Diversification, Performance And Risk Within Service Corporations, Sally Ann Sledge

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

Services currently account for the dominant share of the workforce in all developed nations and are the fastest growing sector of employment in most developing nations. Services comprise approximately two-thirds of the GDP (gross domestic product) or total domestic output of final goods and services in highly industrialized nations from the OECD (Organization for Cooperation and Development). They make up almost half of the GDP in developing nations. All economic forecasts predict that services will continue to grow and account for the vast majority of future economic expansion throughout the world. Despite these facts, services have been studied infrequently among …
