OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity amongst hypertensive and diabetic adult patients in primary health care centers, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical records of 3186 adult hypertensive and diabetic patients in 10 primary health care centers in Riyadh, from August to October 1999. RESULTS: Nineteen percent of the patients were their ideal weight (body mass index < 25 kg/m2), while 35% were overweight (body mass index 25-29.9 kg/m2). Forty one percent were moderately obese (body mass index 30-40 kg/m2) and 5% were morbidly obese (body mass index > 40 kg/m2). Post Traumatic High-Flow Arterial Priapism. The Need For Increased Awareness Among Health Care Professionals, Riyadh F. Talic, Saleh A. Al-Damegh

Saudi Medical Journal

High flow arterial priapism is a rare urological emergency. Presentation, diagnosis and institution of definitive management are often delayed. We describe our experience with this diagnostic entity and reviewed the literature to define possible reasons for the delayed diagnosis and management. We report two patients (10 years and 35 years old) that presented following blunt perineal trauma. The presentation and diagnosis of arterial priapism were delayed in both patients. Selective angiogram of the internal pudendal artery revealed arteriocavernous fistula in each patient. Embolization of the fistulae by gel foam was carried out at the same sitting. Penile detumescence was noted …

Dandy-Walker Syndrome In Association With Neurofibromatosis In Monozygotic Twins, Roshan L. Koul, Alexander Chacko, Hans O. Leven

Saudi Medical Journal

Dandy-Walker syndrome in monozygotic twins is reported. The twins reported, presented with delayed development, big head and dysmorphic features. In addition, there were significant cafe-au-lait spots on the trunk and other minor features consistent with the diagnosis of neurofibromatosis. To the best of our knowledge, Dandy-Walker syndrome in combination with neurofibromatosis in monozygotic twins has not been previously reported.

The Fair Play Project: Evaluation Of Ethical-Value Choices In An Educational Sportsmanship Program, C. Bruce Martin

Masters Theses

The erosion of ethical values of athletes and the rise of unsportsmanlike behaviors by our nation's athletic programs is at near epidemic levels. This study evaluated the four-year Fair Play Project intervention in its attempt to correct the problem of poor sportsmanship behaviors created by a lack of ethical reasoning. Beginning in the summer of 1996 as an initiative from athletic directors representing an interscholastic athletic conference in Southwest Michigan, the Fair Play Project had four goals: (I) Plan and implement an annual student leadership conference; (2) Create a school-based student Sportsmanship Task Force in order to improve the sportsmanship …

The Value Of Life In Legal Contexts: Survey And Critique, W. Kip Viscusi Apr 2000

The Value Of Life In Legal Contexts: Survey And Critique, W. Kip Viscusi

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Value of life issues traditionally pertain to insurance of the losses of accident victims, for which replacement of the economic loss is often an appropriate concept. Deterrence measures of the value of life focus on risk-money tradeoffs involving small changes in risk. Using market data for risky jobs and product risk contexts often yields substantial estimates of the value of life in the range of $3 million to $9 million. These estimates are useful in providing guidance for regulatory policy and assessments of liability. However, use of these values to determine compensation, known as hedonic damages, leads to excessive insurance.

The Criminal Defense Lawyer's Fiduciary Duty To Clients With Mental Disability, Christopher Slobogin, Amy Mashburn Apr 2000

The Criminal Defense Lawyer's Fiduciary Duty To Clients With Mental Disability, Christopher Slobogin, Amy Mashburn

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This Article has argued that the defense attorney has a multifaceted fiduciary duty toward the client with mental disability. That duty requires, first and foremost, respect for the autonomy of the client. The lawyer shows that respect not only by heeding the wishes of the competent client but by refusing to heed the wishes of the incompetent client. A coherent approach to the competency construct is therefore important. Following the lead of Professor Bonnie, this Article has broken competency into two components: assistance competency and decisional competency. It has defined the former concept in traditional terms, as an understanding of …

Working Both (Positivist) Ends Toward A New (Pragmatist) Middle In Environmental Law, J.B. A. Ruhl Apr 2000

Working Both (Positivist) Ends Toward A New (Pragmatist) Middle In Environmental Law, J.B. A. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This review of Daniel Farber's recent book Eco-pragmatism, in which he argues on behalf of taking more pragmatic approaches to the development of environmental policy, provides both the background necessary for appreciating Farber's union of ecosystem dynamics science and environmental pragmatism philosophy, and the basis for extending the new "eco-pragmatism" approach into natural resources conservation settings. Eco-pragmatism implies the intersection of two components-the eco, being the rich and developing field of ecosystem science and management, and the pragmatism, being the classical American pragmatist philosophy represented today in environmental settings through the emergence of environmental pragmatism philosophy. Unfortunately, Eco-pragmatism provides little …

The article also describes the main barriers faced by microcredit institutions in the UK and offers solutions to obtaining funds from the private, public, and voluntary sectors and to operating within a legal and regulatory framework that permits microcredit institutions to serve their clients with …

In A.D. 1000, the Icelandic Parliament held their annual two-week summer session in Parliament's Field, a remote area of southwest Iceland where they had convened each year since A.D. 930. In this lush plain, where lava cliffs bear witness of fire meeting ice, Christianity was adopted as the official religion of the entire Icelandic nation. The year 2000 marks the millennial anniversary of this event. It is also a year of reflection for Latter-day Saints, as the first LDS chapel in Iceland will be dedicated in the summer of 2000.

"Pleasing To The Eyes Of An Exile": The Latter-Day Saint Sojourn At Winter Quarters, 1846-1848, Jennifer L. Lund

BYU Studies

Early on the cold, clear morning of November 21, 1846, John D. Lee "arose from sleep," dressed, and "walked out" into the streets of Winter Quarters. Struck by his first view of daylight, he wrote:

I was astonished when I looked around and saw what serious enterprise and industry had brought to pass within 6 weeks past. A city of at least 400 houses had been erected in that short space of time, through the ingenuity and industry of the Saints. No other people but the Saints of God has ever been known to accomplish as much in so short …

Student Publications

Hürthle cell adenomas (HCAs) are a rare and potentially lethal variant of follicular tumors of the thyroid. Considerable controversy exists regarding potential risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment of HCAs. The authors report the case of a 38-year-old male patient with an 8.3 cm × 3.5 cm HCA. Diagnosis was made preoperatively from a core needle biopsy and confirmed postoperatively on frozen section. Treatment consisted of a right lobectomy.
