The Enforcement Of Environmental Law In England And Wales, Lisa Jane Page Jan 2000

The Enforcement Of Environmental Law In England And Wales, Lisa Jane Page

Plymouth Business School Theses

The control of environmentally damaging activities has become one of the most important areas for concern in recent years. The amount of legislation relating to this subject area has increased several-fold, with European Directives and domestic laws being introduced in response to pressure from a variety of avenues. Key studies on the enforcement of environmental law have been carried out. However, this work was undertaken prior to the expansion of legislative provisions at the start of the 1990s. In the light of this new legislation, new regulatory agencies, and changing public opinion, the following research aims were formulated: 1. To …

A Study Of Trust And Commitment Amongst Nursing Staff Within Nhs Organisations, Thomas Joseph Mccabe Jan 2000

A Study Of Trust And Commitment Amongst Nursing Staff Within Nhs Organisations, Thomas Joseph Mccabe

Plymouth Business School Theses

Much academic research supposes that there is a relationship between the level of trust amongst employees and their managers and the extent to which employees are committed, in terms of their attitudes and their behaviour towards the aims and objectives of the organisation and their daily tasks and duties (Kanter, 1972; Eisenstadt and Roniger, 1984; Geller 1988, Guest, 1991; Morgan and Hunt, 1994; Fine and Holyfield, 1996; Brocker, et al, 1997). This study has sought to explore and assess the level and nature of trust and the sources and the conditions which create trust between nursing staff and their managers …

The e+-jet invariant mass spectrum produced in the reaction e+p → e+ X has been studied at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV. The data were collected using the ZEUS detector operating at the HERA collider, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb-1. The observed mass spectrum is in good agreement with Standard Model expectations up to an e+-jet mass of 210 GeV. Above this mass, some excess is seen. The angular distribution of these events is typical of high-Q2 neutral current events and does not give convincing evidence for the presence of a narrow scalar or vector …

In a search for signatures of physics processes beyond the Standard Model, various eeqq vector contact-interaction hypotheses have been tested using the high-Q2 deep inelastic neutral-current e+p scattering data collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 47.7pb-1 of e+p interactions at 300 GeV center-of-mass energy. No significant evidence of a contact-interaction signal has been found. Limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the contact-interaction amplitudes. The effective mass scales Λ corresponding to these limits range from 1.7 TeV to 5 TeV for the contact-interaction scenarios considered.

The production of D*± (2010) mesons in deep inelastic scattering has been measured in the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 37 pb-1. The decay channels D*+ → D0π+ (+c.c.), with D0 → K-π+ or D0 → K-π-π+π+, have been used to identify the D mesons. The e+p cross section for inclusive D*± production with 1 < Q2 < 600 GeV2 and 0.02 < y < 0.7 is 8.31±0.31(stat.)+0.30-0.50 (syst.) nb in the kinematic region 1.5 < pT(D*±) < 15 GeV and \η(D*±)\ < 1.5. Differential cross sections are consistent with a next-to-leading-order perturbative-QCD calculation when using charm-fragmentation models which take into account the interaction of the charm quark with the proton remnant. The observed cross section is extrapolated to the full kinematic region in pT(D*±) and η(D*±) in order to determine the charm contribution, Fcc̄2 (x, Q2), to the proton structure function. The ratio Fcc̄2/F2 rises from ≃10% at Q2 ≃ 1.8GeV2 to ≃30% at Q2 ≃130GeV2 for x values in the range 10-4 to 10-3.

Correlations between charged particles in deep inelastic e+ p scattering have been studied in the Breit frame with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 6.4pb-1. Short-range correlations are analysed in terms of the angular separation between current-region particles within a cone centred around the virtual photon axis. Long-range correlations between the current and target regions have also been measured. The data support predictions for the scaling behaviour of the angular correlations at high Q2 and for anti-correlations between the current and target regions over a large range in Q2 and in the Bjorken scaling variable x. …

The e+p charged-current deep inelastic scattering cross sections, dσ/dQ2 for Q2 between 200 and 60000 GeV2, and dσ/dx and dσ/dy for Q2 > 200 GeV2, have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. A data sample of 47.7 pb-1, collected at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV, has been used. The double-differential cross-section dσ/dQ2 falls by a factor of about 50000 as Q2 increases from 280 to 30000 GeV2. The double differential cross section d2σ/dxdQ2 has also been measured. A comparison between the data and Standard Model (SM) predictions shows that contributions from antiquarks (ū and c̄) and quarks (d …

Predicting Turnover And Retention In Nursing Home Administrators: Management And Policy Implications, Douglas A. Singh, Robert C. Schwab

Faculty Publications

Administrator turnover and its impact on the quality of patient care are important concerns in the nursing home industry. This study evaluates a model to determine which factors, attitudes, and personal characteristics can predict tenure. Responses to a survey from 290 nursing home administrators (NHAs) who furnished data on their previous positions were analyzed using logistic regression methods. The extracted model correlates tenure with the administrator's past patterns of stability, community attachment, organizational commitment, and facility performance. The model is particularly effective (85% accuracy) in flagging NHAs who are likely to depart within their first 3 years of employment. Implications …
