The Experience Of Interpersonal Forgiveness: An Empirical-Phenomenological Investigation, Halimatun Halaliah Mokhtar Apr 2000

The Experience Of Interpersonal Forgiveness: An Empirical-Phenomenological Investigation, Halimatun Halaliah Mokhtar

Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the lived experience of interpersonal forgiveness of individuals (known as co-researchers) by employing the empirical-phenomenological method. This study aimed at identifying, understanding, and describing the general psychological meaning (Tesch, 1990) or the essences/structures (Moustakas, 1994) of the experience of the phenomenon through the protocols of these individuals. It was also a goal of this study to develop a psychological theory of interpersonal forgiveness.

A two-interview structure was conducted with eight individuals (three males and five females) who had forgiven their significant offending others. The first interview focused on the meaning and …

Comparative Analysis Of Three Remediation Technologies For The Clean Up Of Petroleum Contaminated Groundwater, Thomas Bouck Apr 2000

Comparative Analysis Of Three Remediation Technologies For The Clean Up Of Petroleum Contaminated Groundwater, Thomas Bouck

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This paper will compare three remediation technologies to determine which is the most efficient and effective remediation treatment for a petroleum contaminated groundwater site. The three remediation technologies are in situ bioremediation, in situ air sparging, and air stripping with carbon filtration. This comparison will be done through a literature review. It will take the information derived from the review and then apply it to the information about a petroleum contaminated groundwater location. The comparative analysis will consist of these parameters permit requirements, clean up time, operating and maintenance, and geological factors.

These factors permit requirements, cleanup time, and operating …

Implementing Corporate Universities In The Public Sector: Evaluating Clark County’S Supervisor’S Organizational Skills Program, Karen E. Stevens

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

There is an increasing trend in the private sector to provide development opportunities to employees which include more than on-the-job or skills-based training. These programs are often referred to as “corporate universities.” Clark County is currently attempting to transform its training program to apply “corporate university” concepts to the development of its public sector employees. The purpose of this paper is to examine the planning conducted by the county’s program development team, and to determine if the now-implemented program is reaching its target audience, achieving its goals, and being evaluated correctly. Research for this paper was conducted through a review …

Effect Of Chlamydia Trachomatis Infection And Subsequent Tnfa Secretion On Apoptosis In The Murine Genital Tract, Jean-Luc Perfettini, Toni Darville, Gabriel Gachelin, Philippe Souque, Michel Huerre, Alice Dautry-Varsat, David M. Ojcius Apr 2000

Effect Of Chlamydia Trachomatis Infection And Subsequent Tnfa Secretion On Apoptosis In The Murine Genital Tract, Jean-Luc Perfettini, Toni Darville, Gabriel Gachelin, Philippe Souque, Michel Huerre, Alice Dautry-Varsat, David M. Ojcius

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

The pathology observed during Chlamydia infection is due initially to localized tissue damage caused by the infection itself, followed by deleterious host inflammatory responses that lead to permanent scarring. We have recently reported that the infection byChlamydia in vitro results in apoptosis of epithelial cells and macrophages and that infected monocytes secrete the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β. At the same time, proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) can also trigger apoptosis of susceptible cells. To study the possible relationship between Chlamydia trachomatis infection and apoptosis in vivo, we used the terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling technique to …

Membrane Cholesterol Content Modulates Activation Of Volume-Regulated Anion Current In Bovine Endothelial Cells., I Levitan, A E Christian, T N Tulenko, G H Rothblat Apr 2000

Membrane Cholesterol Content Modulates Activation Of Volume-Regulated Anion Current In Bovine Endothelial Cells., I Levitan, A E Christian, T N Tulenko, G H Rothblat

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Activation of volume-regulated anion current (VRAC) plays a key role in the maintenance of cellular volume homeostasis. The mechanisms, however, that regulate VRAC activity are not fully understood. We have examined whether VRAC activation is modulated by the cholesterol content of the membrane bilayer. The cholesterol content of bovine aortic endothelial cells was increased by two independent methods: (a) exposure to a methyl-beta-cyclodextrin saturated with cholesterol, or (b) exposure to cholesterol-enriched lipid dispersions. Enrichment of bovine aortic endothelial cells with cholesterol resulted in a suppression of VRAC activation in response to a mild osmotic gradient, but not to a strong …

Site-Based Dropout Identification And Prescription Process For Alternative Education In A Diverse School System, William P. Krupp Apr 2000

Site-Based Dropout Identification And Prescription Process For Alternative Education In A Diverse School System, William P. Krupp

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

This study developed a school site-based dropout identification and prescription process for student placement in alternative education programs in a school system with diverse residential environments—urban, rural, and suburban. The dropout performance-based and measurable predictor variables selected through discriminate function analysis were total retentions, yearly average of absences, total out-of-school suspensions, the state competency tests passed on time, total administrative hearings, and yearly average of poor grades. The combination and nature of these variables allow for early detection of potential dropouts.

While subtle differences existed between the urban, suburban, and rural prediction formulas, the variables selected produced prediction formulas with …

A Buffered Advection/Dispersion Lake Water Quality Transport Framework For Modeling Lake Gaston Pipeline Intake Water Withdrawal, Lloyd Ashton Gatling Apr 2000

A Buffered Advection/Dispersion Lake Water Quality Transport Framework For Modeling Lake Gaston Pipeline Intake Water Withdrawal, Lloyd Ashton Gatling

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Water quality response to reservoir water withdrawal is investigated in Pea Hill Arm of Lake Gaston, a non-tidal reservoir tributary, where the point of water withdrawal is in an upstream tributary and influences the direction of tributary flow causing longitudinal velocity null flow conditions to occur. The study also focuses on control of withdrawal rate and timing to optimize both quality of water remaining in the tributary and quantity of water that can be safely withdrawn.

Research was conducted assuming steady state conditions and later under spatial and temporal variability experienced in the reservoir with main lake pool elevation fluctuations …

Kinetic Characterization Of Tetracycline Binding And Release By Demineralized Bone - Dfdba, Orner Kabil Apr 2000

Kinetic Characterization Of Tetracycline Binding And Release By Demineralized Bone - Dfdba, Orner Kabil

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The microbial etiology of periodontal diseases has led to widespread research in the development of methods and local delivery systems to increase the efficacy of antibiotic therapy. Several drug delivery systems employing biodegradable and nonbiodegradable carriers have been shown to release antibiotics directly into periodontal pockets. The purpose of this study was to determine the binding and release kinetics of tetracycline by demineralized bone. Further aspects of the study include in vitro evaluation of DFDBA (demineralized freeze-dried bone allografts) as a tetracycline carrier system for periodontal therapy. Experiments were performed which employed different tetracycline concentrations with constant amounts of bone …

A Report Card On The Impeachment: Judging The Institutions That Judged President Clinton, Susan Low Bloch Apr 2000

A Report Card On The Impeachment: Judging The Institutions That Judged President Clinton, Susan Low Bloch

Law and Contemporary Problems

Reflecting on the impeachment and trial of Pres Bill Clinton, Bloch considers how well the impeachment process worked and what was learned from the experience that might be a guide in the event of another impeachment in the future. Any critique of the impeachment process should begin with the independent counsel statute.

Taking Economic Equality Off The Table, Gene R. Nichol

Law and Contemporary Problems

Nichol considers Pres Clinton's Administration's record on issues of economic equality, including California Gov Pete Wilson's plan to discriminate against newly arrived California welfare recipients. The Clinton Administration has not been alone in taking economic fairness off the political agenda, but they have clearly done their part.

Religion And The Law In The Clinton Era: An Anti-Madisonian Legacy, Marci A. Hamilton Apr 2000

Religion And The Law In The Clinton Era: An Anti-Madisonian Legacy, Marci A. Hamilton

Law and Contemporary Problems

Hamilton first examines Pres Bill Clinton's rhetoric, and then his Administration's actions to promote religious free exercise. She hopes to show that the Administration has integrated religious entities into administrative agenda-setting, which is consciously intended to serve religious ends.

Writing Off Race, Girardeau A. Spann Apr 2000

Writing Off Race, Girardeau A. Spann

Law and Contemporary Problems

Because the US Constitution says absolutely nothing about affirmative action, the Supreme Court should have absolutely nothing to say about it either. Rather, the political branches should set the nation's affirmative action policy, and they should do so with political leadership provided by the President. Spann considers Pres Clinton's record on affirmative action.

Bakke Betrayed, Alan J. Meese Apr 2000

Bakke Betrayed, Alan J. Meese

Law and Contemporary Problems

While it seems that a President who disagrees with the Supreme Court's account of the Constitution faces only two choices--to enforce the Court's decision or defy the Court and take his case to a skeptical populace--there is a third way in which the President can publicly embrace the doctrine in question, while at the same time refusing to follow it. Pres Clinton's Administration has followed just such a third way approach to "Regents of the University of California v. Bakke."

The Future Of The American Military Presence In Europe, Lloyd J. Matthews Colonel Apr 2000

The Future Of The American Military Presence In Europe, Lloyd J. Matthews Colonel

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Ten years have elapsed since the fall of the Berlin Wall, which served as a fitting symbol for the end of the Cold War. That historic juncture brought into question the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which has served Alliance members so well since its founding in 1949. It also brought into question the rationale for America's continued deep involvement in European security affairs. With the gradual realization that the Russian menace is essentially dead, at least for the next 10 to 15 years and perhaps longer, and with NATO's missions having evolved well beyond the original purpose of territorial defense, …

A Need For Managed Care In Saudi Arabia, Mohammed H. Mufti Apr 2000

A Need For Managed Care In Saudi Arabia, Mohammed H. Mufti

Saudi Medical Journal

Is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia getting value for money invested in health? Quality care is being provided throughout health facilities in the Kingdom, however there is minimal control of utilization in all health sectors, consequently leading to abuse and over utilization, particularly in the public sector. Managed care programs have proven effective in reducing unnecessary inpatient and ancillary service utilization by reducing use of expensive procedures and unnecessary, highly specialized services, and shifting to less expensive care options. Health maintenance organizations are the best example of a managed health care model; tracking good performance and cost savings averaging between …
