Scaling Back The Ada: How The Sutton V. United Airlines Decision Affects Employees With Bipolar Disorder., Kevin Wiley Jr. Jan 2000

Scaling Back The Ada: How The Sutton V. United Airlines Decision Affects Employees With Bipolar Disorder., Kevin Wiley Jr.

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

The Sutton v. United Airlines decision went too far in the Supreme Court’s effort to scale back the protections of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Congress should review the Sutton decision and amend the ADA to consider disabilities as they exist without regard to mitigating measures based on the severity of the illness. To seek protection under the ADA, one must have a discernable disability, and one’s impairment must be diagnosed and disclosed to the employer. Disability, however, was not specifically defined in the ADA, and no agency or regulation has specifically defined disability for the courts to utilize …

Increasing Rural Women's Involvement In Government Decision Making, Teresa Maiolo

Research outputs pre 2011

The purpose of this report was to identify why rural women's involvement in government decision-making is of a low level despite the concerted government action, and to furthermore provide solutions to inform action. The strength of the research presented is that all information is firmly established in the rural women's experiences.

Twenty-one Western Australian rural women leaders were individually interviewed. These women represent the larger rural regions of Western Australia: South West, Great Southern, Goldfields-Esperance, Mid-West, Gascoyne, and Kimberley regions. These women were familiar with the broad systems of government, leadership, information and communication technology, and obviously rural life...

The Roles Of Cognitive Rigidity And Impulsivity In Adolescent Suicide Attempts., Robin Vaughan Eliason Jan 2000

The Roles Of Cognitive Rigidity And Impulsivity In Adolescent Suicide Attempts., Robin Vaughan Eliason

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Suicide is a major health problem for adolescents. It is the sixth leading cause of death for five to 14 year-olds and the first and the third leading cause of death for adolescents 15 to 19 years of age. The purpose of this study was to extend the research on the risk factors of cognitively rigid behavior, impulsive behavior, and depression and to lay groundwork for the validation of cognitively rigid and impulsive personality traits of adolescent suicide attempters. The amount of time between thought and attempt was explored to extend the research on impulsivity. In this three-group design adolescent …

Paradoxical Interventions With Severe Conduct-Disordered Adolescents: Research Of Treatment Effectiveness., Marsha Anne Mills Jan 2000

Paradoxical Interventions With Severe Conduct-Disordered Adolescents: Research Of Treatment Effectiveness., Marsha Anne Mills

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Paradoxical interventions are therapeutic techniques in which the therapist appears to promote the worsening or continuation of the problem rather than its removal. The objective of this treatment is to lessen or eliminate the problematic behavior through the unusual means of encouraging it. Only two previous studies have empirically evaluated these techniques with resistant and defiant youths; those results suggested that paradoxical interventions may be effective with severely conduct-disordered adolescents. This study applied the techniques of symptom scheduling and restraining with three conduct-disordered adolescents residing in a therapeutic group home. The experimental design was a nonconcurrent multiple baseline across participants; …

Cognitive -Affective, Behavioral, And Physiological Response In Injury Among Competitive Athletes., R Renee Newcomer Jan 2000

Cognitive -Affective, Behavioral, And Physiological Response In Injury Among Competitive Athletes., R Renee Newcomer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Injured athletes' psychological distress has been explored using a stress-response paradigm and through a variety of research methodologies. Despite growing interest in psychophysiological stress-response research (Gatchel, 1997), physiological features of psychological distress have not yet been explored among injured athletes (Flint, 1998). Psychological distress has been associated with delayed healing among other medical populations (Kiecolt-Glaser, Page, Marucha, MacCallum, & Glaser, 1998), and physiological features of distress have lead to increased reports of a variety of health-related problems (Baum, Gatchel, & Krantz, 1997). The present research consists of two studies designed to validate preliminary reports and advance current knowledge regarding the …

The Law And Order Presidency., Willard Mark Oliver Jan 2000

The Law And Order Presidency., Willard Mark Oliver

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The theory of presidential influence over public opinion is used to predict the impact of presidential time and attention focused on crime on the public's concern for crime as the “most important problem facing the country.” The more attention presidents give to the issue of crime, the more concerned the public becomes with crime. The study addresses the assumptions of the hypothesis by first assessing the history of presidential involvement in crime control policy; second, by delineating reasons why presidents have become involved in such policies; and, finally, by articulating the means presidents have available in order to engage in …

Study Of Human Head Impact: Brain Tissue Constitutive Models., Toru Aida Jan 2000

Study Of Human Head Impact: Brain Tissue Constitutive Models., Toru Aida

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Finite element (FE) models of the human head have been used extensively to assess engineering response parameters (pressure, shear strain, etc.) that constitute the basis of various injury criteria including the Head Injury Criterion (HIC). There is a wide range of brain material properties reported in the literature, and linear elastic models are frequently used for the brain tissue which is viscoelastic in nature. The uncertainty around the properties of brain tissue affects the perceived importance of those response parameters under consideration. In this research, the effect on head injury criteria of five reported viscoelastic brain models and their linear …

This project was a pilot study examining the effects of a rural parent education program on parenting stress, perceived social support, parental locus of control, and parental efficacy. The sample consisted of a group of six mothers in West Virginia. The variables were tested using the Parenting Stress Index, Perceived Social Support from Friends Index and two subscales, Parental Efficacy and Belief in Fate and Chance, from the Parental Locus of Control Scale. Using Cronbach’s alpha, the Parental Efficacy Subscale and all but one subscale of the Parenting Stress Index were found to be reliable with this small sample. Analysis …

The Effects Of Different Shifts On Injury And Illness Rates At A Manufacturing Facility., Angela M. Mattis Jan 2000

The Effects Of Different Shifts On Injury And Illness Rates At A Manufacturing Facility., Angela M. Mattis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The study examined the impact of working different shifts on the injury and illness rates at a diesel engine factory. A retrospective study was conducted using injury data from 1995-1999 collected from the test site. The injury rates of the shifts were compared with each other and with other studies. The study showed that there was not a significant increase in the amount of injuries on the first shift as compared to the other two main shifts. This indicates that the off shifts may not necessarily cause an increase in the injury and illness rate at the facility. The results …

An Examination Of Existing Caregiving Models And Male Spousal Caregivers., Kristi A. Barnes Jan 2000

An Examination Of Existing Caregiving Models And Male Spousal Caregivers., Kristi A. Barnes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As part of a larger study examining well-being among older West Virginia residents, male spousal caregivers (n = 30) and their non-caregiving counterparts (n = 99) were compared on self-reports of physical and psychological well-being, and appraisals of social support. Demographic trends suggest the importance of examining the caregiving situation among females, the traditional caregivers, and male caregivers who are growing in numbers. The data revealed few differences between caregivers and non-caregivers, chronological age was not a factor. This suggests that the male and female caregiving experience are not consistent. Given the growing percentage of male caregivers and the demand …

Comparative Assessment Of Bit Geometry And Cutting Parameters., Shiv Kumar Bhuvanapalli Jan 2000

Comparative Assessment Of Bit Geometry And Cutting Parameters., Shiv Kumar Bhuvanapalli

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Objectives of this research are to evaluate the performance of cutting tool, having different geometric configurations, in regards to bit – rock interaction and dust generation. When the cutting process takes place, the main objective is to cut bigger blocks of land/ridge rather than small and less fine dust. It is also important to minimize the amount of airborne dust. The ratio of bit spacing to depth of cut, angle of attack and many other bit geometrical factors contribute to the amount of settled and respirable dust production. When rock is cut and two cutting bits are placed adjacently …
